I downloaded the Red plugin (the most recent version) for Final Cut
Pro 7 and installed it. I confirmed that it did install because in the the
Log and Transfer window I can see the Red Digital Redcode in the
preferences pull down window. However when I browse to the Red footage on
my RAID and try to bring the R3D file into Final Cut's Log and Transfer
window to convert it to Pro res 422 HQ- the R3D file is "grayed" out and I
cannot access it. Rather it imports the entire RDC folder which Log and
Transfer cannot ingest.

What am I doing wrong? I read the White Paper thoroughly and followed all
the instructions. According to the paper I should be able to select the
R3D file in the Log and Transfer window and if I selected convert to Pro
Res 422 HQ in the preferences window then Final Cut should import the R3D file and convert it to Pro
res 422 HQ. Where it should show up in my project window as a useable file
within Final Cut.

I am running Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro. Version 10.6.8
Processor: 2 X 2.8 GHZ Quadcore Intel Xeon
Memory: 10 GB 800 MHZ DDR 2 F8-DIMM

I would appreciate any help on this process. Thank you,

It's not compatible with epic or scarlet footage, yet

Hey Josh, do you expect RED to release Epic/Scarlet firmware for FCP7 or Apple themselves? Just curious as I wasn't aware FCP7 got much support anymore. It'd be great if it does get this update tho, I cut with it and would prefer to stick with FCP for awhile longer.

Comments from Jannard suggest that it's up to Apple to supply the hooks to use new R3D (Scarlet/Epic) in FCP. And would expect if/when Apple does, it will be for FCPX only. Which blows since I too use FCP 7...
so for now the route thru RCX is the best (only?) way to FCP...

The best workflow I've seen for going to FCP 7 was to just go through RCX and transcode it through that, then to use it in FCP 7.

With this workflow, how do you then re-conform scarlet R3D files for grading / mastering at 4k (assuming you can't reconnect media in FCP7)?

Thanks guys for your much appreciated feedback. I was driving myself crazy trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. For now I will use the RCX workflow. Is anyone out there using Premiere Pro CS5? Is Scarlet compatible with that and is it a better option than Final Cut 7?

yes, you can drag and drop the .r3d straight into a premiere pro cs 5.5 timeline. (Just make sure it's cs 5.5) It works like a dream, and you can bind your quick keys to be the same as final cut with a couple of mouse clicks

This is where you'd probably want to make a proxy file I'd assume? I'm not 100% on this. I think you can do an XML export perhaps? James Drake a member on here covered this briefly but I don't remember exactly. He recorded the stream from the event I think.

Thanks for the link Jeffrey, finally checked it out, very useful.

But I just discovered the Premiere Pro workflow and it looks far less clunky - a dream compared to FCP7! Just got to get my head around the minor differences in how editing actually works and I'll be ready to cut by the time the Scarlet gets here!

I just made the jump from FCP7 to Premiere Pro and I must say its great and much easier then expected. you can even select FCP7 shortcut keys as standard. Totally recommend trying the trial at least. I opened Epic and Scarlet material straight in the time line in RAW format with an easy update from adobe's website. Would have liked to stay with FCP7 as well out of convenience sake but this is definetaly a very very option.

Right place would probably be in a "Workflow" section. But either way I heard that they will be releasing a FCP7 plugin for Epic and Scarlet soon.
