Look what people built:

I needed a portable china ball the other day and quickly made this...
Here are a few projects I've been working on in between shows.
Here's another example from what I shot over the weekend.
Here are a few quick shots from yesterday's shoot...

This Group Buy is now Closed.
If you missed out on this batch and want in on a possible second batch PM me your email and I'll add you to the list.

MAX DISCOUNT LOCKED IN!

$79 per spool!!
(normally $300-$400)

This Group Buy closes TODAY!

We met our goal in 1 day and 1st stretch goal in less than 2 days!. We just passed our last stretch goal and locked in the unheard of price of $79 per spool!

UPDATE: Awesome News! We are a go on the budget controllers/dimmers! They will be flicker free and less than $50!

I've spent a few months working on this deal and finally found a great source for budget CRI 95 strip lights. This is very special order and it required that I pay for the custom PCB design myself.

Details:
  • The strip lights come in 5 meter (16.4 foot) spools.
  • The available color temperatures are 3200k, 6000k, and variable 2700k to 6000k.
  • Density: 120 LED per meter. 60 is available if enough people want it.
  • We need to get a minimum order of at least 500 meters.
  • Accessories (power supplies, quick snap connectors, etc.) are available.

The price is $95 per 5m (16.4ft) spool.

Comparable LEDs go for $300 to $400 per 5m spool so these lights really are a bargain.

The light quality is beautiful. Everyone that I've showed them to in person wants in on this order. In fact a local DP here wanted to buy all my sample spools.

(This was taken with my iPad.)

Test footage and technical specs are coming as are details on the accessories.

If you are interested, reply by PM or in the thread with how many spools of each type of light you want and I'll add you to the list.

When you join please PM me your email address!

FAQ

What color temps are available?
Tungsten, Daylight, and variable 2700k to 6000k.

How do I power these?

The lights are all 12 volt. I connect them to a 12 volt V-mount battery with a D-Tap connector. You can also use an AC power supply.

Can I cut the strips to the size I want?
Yes, there are cut marks on the LED strip itself. Just cut along the line and connect a power source.

Is there a color cast/spike typical of cheap LEDs?
No, there isn't. These are top quality lights.

What is the CRI?
95 - 98.

Should I get the variable or fixed strips?
The quickest and easiest way to get started is to use a fixed strip. All you need to do is connect it to a power source. I prefer the variable strips myself, but you must have a professional quality controller to adjust the color temp and brightness.

Do I need to decide which type of strip I want now?
No. Once the Group Buy closes I will contact you to confirm your choices. After that it can't be changed.

What about accessories like power supplies and connectors?
Everyone that opts in to the Group Buy will be emailed a PDF with all the accessories and prices. It's all hugely discounted.

Looks interesting :)

Any info on accessory prices (ie power/connectors etc) and also what the tradeoff is for the variables vs fixed col temps?

This is awesome! Put me down for 2 spools (variable color temp). How do you power these spools? And is it included? Can I make them smaller? How does it work?

Count me in for 2 minimum. Looks nice. Are they UL listed?

Power supplies are around $25 each and connectors are cheap. Lots of options are available. I should have confirmation on the pricing tomorrow.

No trade off at all with the variable strips. They are brighter than the fixed strips actually. The only issue is the controller. I'm trying to find budget controllers/dimmers that are professional quality and suitable for video. The expensive ones are always an option since this is all standard stuff, but I'm looking at a $50 price target. Testing a few more out soon.

You can power these off a 12 volt battery. D-taps work great for these. AC Power supplies will be ~$25. You can cut the strips to the length you want. There are marks on the strips showing you where to cut. It's really easy to work with.

Which type/color temp?

Not sure about UL, but here are the certifications on the packaging:

Definitely intrigued. I'll have to do a little more research but it looks promising.

I just added a bunch of pictures of example uses above. They are also great for car lighting, and really for any situation where you need to have a high quality light source that can fit anywhere and run off 12v batteries (or AC with a power supply).

Dimmable?

Do I understand you need a controller for each strip you cut and run separately? And the variable temp controllers cost $50 vs. $25? I'd be in for probably 5 x 5 meters.

CRI =95? Color spikes?

CRI =95? Color spikes?

Each separate fixed color temp strip needs only a power source. A dimmer is optional. Variable strips always need a controller so you can set the color temp. There are professional dimmers and controllers made for film/video work that will work great with these. I'm testing budget options to find one that's more affordable. I think I'll be able to get them for ~$50.

CRI95, no color spike. Really beautiful light.

Want me to add you to the list?

Count me in.

Awesome. Which type and how many?

I don't understand the boom/china ball set up: is the strip taped to the china ball on the outside?

You wrap the light around something inside the lantern. One common option is to use a Lantern Lock lantern because it's got a 5/8" spud you can attach to most anything.

I have been experimenting with several LED chips with a CRI of 90, 93, and 97. Unfortunately CRI in itself isn't that great since certain colors are more important for skin tones and such than others. That being said my CRI 97 chips are closest to tungsten from my tests so far. All of the LEDs I have tested are having trouble with purple colors. Have you run any color tests with these chips?

Have you run any color tests with these chips?

I'll be posting the tests this week. I'm not typically a fan of LED lights because of the skin tone problems. I'm very satisfied with these strip lights though. I'm using them throughout the rest of my film.

Is the plan to present power options/dimmers etc that work well with these?

Would be helpful to know where to get the accys before joining the Group buy.

Thanks

if these are as good as you say and we can see some good tests I will take 2 variable strips and accessories when you have a list.

thanks for organizing

Paul
