  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FrameThrower-Jarred Land Post

I want it to be RED's first real POST appliance.

What I mean is

1. Portable
2. Backs up data
3. Creates proxy media
4. Runs on battery or AC
5. plugs into any computer or laptop.

Sort of like redecorate, redraw and a data backup station in one box.

Long overdue

+ 1! I'd buy this before I upgrade the camera.

Yes, this is curious. Might Apple be ready to announce nvidia GPUs or, it just borrows the circular design of the Mac Pro and is either PC-based or just an add-on enclosure? Personally, I hope it isn't a PC.

What's wrong with PCs?

Heh. I know everything about Weapon, but nothing about this. If it is CPU related, Jarred's built two really impressive boxes this year to crunch .R3Ds. One was Mac based and one was PC based. He posted photographs of them both at some point. This could be either of those or we could be way off. There were a couple of very interesting custom bits in both of them if I recall correctly.

Time will tell.

Whatever it is, it does look freaking bad ass.

Imagine the difference in the industry if read would have early on made it so that it was possible to use the brains as proxy engines.

Kind of hook up a mag reader to the camera body and then flush the media from the side module SSD into that mag reader / second SSD as proxy prores files, would not matter if the proxies where only half debayer as the playback is but if that could be done in the field without even a computer Red would have won far more workflow issues and sold far more cameras I think.

I'm wondering what Apple would think about a "rehoused" Mac Pro being sold by another company. Don't think that will happen. This might be a housing case FOR a Mac Pro, with attachments to enable fast input, export/output of red mini mags.

But it might also be a power station that includes two Nvidia Titan cards a mini-mag reader and slots for backup drives. Connection with Thunderbolt 2 to a Macbook Pro to enable the use of either Redcine or Resolve with all that computing power while automatically backing up data and putting Prores proxies onto a third drive. Marking the end of Data Wranglers, only one DIT needed.

Here's a guess.

Nvidia maybe made the Red branded Rocket X. This is a TB enclosure for a super (dual?) GPU setup for Mac/PC. Not a mac pro in there.

With Rocket X already going a more than ample 70-80fps 6K on a new Mac Pro I'm guessing this is for a camera that's 8/10K Vista Vision and/or Ram buffered High Speed use......

All I know is that the Titan-X is one bad ass r3d crunching card. at $1000, it's a no brainer to get two or three of them to crunch R3ds. Come see me at the Studio Experience booth at NAB to see something awesome with Thunderbolt 2.

Is the vista vision camera going to be called Frame Thrower??

Why guess when Jarred wrote what it is.

OK. Now I can use this thing. My own little machined aluminum box with a TrashCan Mac Pro stuffed inside plus an Integrated REDMAG MINI reader with 8TB internal Thunderbolt RAID. Monster Fan just to keep everything cool. Just for Fun.
