  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FrameThrower-Jarred Land Post

I see the VV logo... my guess it's a 'skeleton' around the brain that adds extra firepower. High FPS here we come. :)

Am I the only one hoping that the FrameThrower refers to the laser projector throwing frames at a screen? I like my Christie M series and 20k's, but I would love to see some competition.

Doubt the projector would have a carry handle.

It bears the VVeapon logo, we're seeing a reference to being something for the desktop, nVidia... *FRAME* and *THROWER* I'm betting it's a compact PC with a good GPU or two geared toward VVeapon workflow and possibly a tethered recording solution and/ or on the fly ingest/ transcode/ catalog sort of setup. I guess we'll know in a few days.

VV logo? That a Bitfenix Spectre Pro fan - a common choice with overclockers and custom PC/Mac enthusiasts etc.

Check logo on product fan vs image. It's a custom OC mac or PC enclosure. Consider the image and post etc. as just an innovator and enthusiast expressing their individual passion through a custom case and design aesthetic to reflect the beauty (and branding) of their core business - cameras. Let's focus on Weapon and what RED is offering on this amazing digital acquisition journey at NAB.. rather than pipe-dreaming that apart from totally resetting the digital cinematography landscape and continuing to provide us amazing cameras with fair upgrade paths, they're now somehow also supposed to pull rabbits out of hats and split their innovation efforts into building portable powerhorse workstations and laser projectors etc...?

For me, their miracles in camera technology are enough... I'd love to see them focus the bulk of their efforts on that journey that we share with them ... I can get or customize great PC/Mac gear, and amazing 4K UHD TVs and Projector technology at incredibly affordable prices already ... just my 2 cents worth.

I believe he's referring to the VV/Skull logo on the lower right on the side of the unit in the attached pic from the first post.

To me the most obvious thing it could be (for your desk #nVidia) is a thunderbolt enclosure for video cards such as the Titian, Rocket, Tesla, etc. to complement the new Weapon camera. Right? I mean they must have a solution for the post side of the Weapon. They have always had a hardware solution for rendering/transcodes/playback and obviously the Weapon needs more firepower than any previous camera.

Thanks Gavin. Like.

There was always talk of this kind of device and it looks just perfect.

If it crunched R3D's that would be cool. Wonder if it plays back r3d's?

It's an ARM processor so no R3D SDK. Maybe now that Atom processors are getting small and low-power they'll make an x86 version in the future... with a rocket. It works as well as you would hope though. For work out in the field without a DIT it's invaluable and ridiculously fast to SSDs.

Framethrower could be an affordable specialized post production hardware acceleration for weapon cameras (new redcode2?????) based on nvidia GPU cards.

It would be great if it could be used with any camera, not just Red. That would be very useful for ingesting. Something like a codex vault, but cheaper and camera independent.

Yes I agree, "Framethrower" would be a pretty bad ass name for a projector :)

After the Sidewinder & Switchblade naming convention I would assume that Framethrower would be a RED media archival box and R3DVault would be a RED projector.

You made me spill my coffee - so funny...!

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I think the naming convention makes perfect sense. I think people are too hung up on "Switchblade" as it applies to a spring-actuated folding or retracting knife, being the common item associated with it. In this case, it's more akin to thin-slice modules we often see for expandable electronics ranging from computer systems, usually servers and cluster nodes, to military hardware. As we refer to these components as "blades". The "Switchblade" in RED DSMC land is an expansion blade which provides buttons and switches. There is no winding of any sort and the only relation to the word "side" would be that it mounts to the side of the camera brain. So I'm not sure why people would think it to be the "Sidewinder" as the two items often get confused.

The "Sidewinder" is a turning or winding tool. Easy to keep at your side in it's little pouch or in your pocket. There are no blades or switches present. No spring actuators to operate any of those absent components. So why would do people get this confused with a "Switchblade?"

Not to go too far off topic...

Switchblade: a pocketknife having the blade spring-operated so that pressure on a release catch causes it to fly open.

Gavin's Pocketknife synonym list: multi-tool, swiss army knife, tool, things not allowed on airplanes by the TSA, shank, jabber, stabby thing.

Sidewinder: A product from RED which attaches to the side of a camera and has a wheel on it which you wind in order to operate the menus. ;)

I think switchblade could have worked for either. And I think Sidewinder could have worked for either. But when put side by side. One definitely has much stronger multi-tool connotations. If you asked me which thing I associate with a swiss army knife: sidewinder missiles or a switchblade I would pick switchblade. That's true if you asked me a Rattlesnake or a switchblade. It was just unfortunate timing that both were released at the same time by the same company so that we had to differentiate between the two on which was which.
