  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Forged CF Red Weapon #000027 has been delivered to Kosmos/ dino

i just looked back at all the posts and it is amazing to me that posts are literally coming from all over the world, blows my mind...we are lucky to live in this time for sure.

here is an update ladies and gentlemen:

I had a busy day today getting some logistical stuff done that has nothing to do with my cameras. one of the things i did do related to all of you reading this was I went by keslow and picked up my epic x Dragon #00031 along with 2 of my master primes, my 25 and my 32. so now I have the weapon, a dragon and an MX red one at my space ready to be put to the test. my goal is to spend part of the weekend shooting a bunch of things. I would like to get as many suggestions as possible about what you all would like to know. for me I am mainly interested in what i can tell my dp and producer/director clients the difference is between the weapon and the dragon as i just spent 40k+ on the upgrade and also another 20k on mini mags and i want to be able to start paying that stuff off. the way to do that is to have the camera in demand and the way to do that is to make the case for the camera as a better choice than the dragon. now when the camera turns into an 8k camera, that will be much easier, the question for the next few months is why should i use a weapon over a dragon besides the weight difference and the black shading.

stay tuned....and thanks for your patience i know there has been basically radio silence for almost 43 hours, believe me it hurts me more than it hurts you because i am the one that spent the money and needs a return asap, so i got you guys...please leave me some clear and concise and do able instructions on what you want and i will do my best with my team to execute. thanks.

This is awesome Dino. I too am looking forward to similar answers for similar reasons -especially since I am upgrading 2 Dragons.

thank you..

i can also count on you and david being up after midnight LA time...consistency is a virtue in my eyes and you two have it, hope to meet you someday.

Hope you make it Itay Dino. Or maybe we could meet up somewhere else to play some shinny!

Hello Dino. I read your last post and thought I would toss out a couple of suggestions re upping the appeal of your weapon. I think one of the dark secrets (i'm exaggerating maybe) of especially the TV production biz is getting good stuff quick. If the weapon with LUTS can produce pretty pro rez out of the gate that would need only tweaking to take it to finish, then a lot of people would jump for that.

The Weapon is already well positioned as Dragon look is getting more traction, and in some corners like Netflix they nix Arri for true 4K which really pits the Dragon against Panasonic and F55. So I would not under sell weight and ease of use frankly. The more one removes any perceived barriers to entry - the sooner Red gains even more momentum.

Would love to see Dragon v. Weapon tests / comparisons:

Boot-up time
Fan Noise
Dynamic Range
Low Light Noise
Highlight Roll Off
75, 100 and 150fps at lowest Compression
CMOS smear
Gate flare, halo or red dot test

+7 to -7EV like this test:

RC Test at 3-12:1
Large tree with complex bark in foreground with deep focus on background with a plain wall or empty sky somewhere in frame. Similar to what Adam did a couple years back (results gone now) to attempt to break the codec:

Thanks for the efforts!

Great stuff, Dino.

I think there are 4 things that would mean a hell of a lot to quite a few.

Lowlight comparisons (at lowest possible compression)
Highlight performance.
High speed compression comparisons (yup, the dreaded tree-leaves with the sun in the background and deep focus is till possibly the best test for that)

As to prores:
Compare transcoded vs recorded prores 444. I would really not mind seeing 1080
Same goes for highspeed.

As to workflows:
If weapon can do the Alexa trick of recording RLF + CDL (instead of baked prores), that would be a great leverage for the platforms.

What Gunliek said, also:

1) OLPF/Color improvements - Weapon OLPFs appear better tuned. LLO in particular appears to have lost its "red orbs" and may even match skintone better in overall rendering. Perhaps Skintone has improved too? Maybe with less visible red noise?

2) CMOS Smear - this has allegedly gotten better. We never notice it on Dragon LLO but a test of both OLPFs on Dragon would still be great.

Thanks Dino!! You rock!!

for the record i only have the low light olpf on the dragon and weapon, so i can not test the skin tone. perhaps another time i can do that. thank you all for the feedback, keep it coming this will be happening all weekend.

When you upgraded to Weapon, did they ask you which one you wanted? I am planning to go with the LLO myself.

This thread does not show the smear, but it shows the orb around the light source. That would be good to test. David's post here is probably the best example of the CMOS smear I can find at the moment. Reposting the image below so you don't have to go looking for it. Since you have the EPIC Dragon, you should be able to find something that causes the smear to happen and then you can try the same shot with Weapon to see the improvements.

Thank you Dino for sharing with us and taking the time during your busy schedule, and or weekend, to share your experiences and results with us.

The up arrow shows the smear, of course. :) This is why I suggested earlier in the thread to have a dark room with a window and then we can see what either side of the window looks like in the shadow and see if the magenta CMOS smear is still present.

i was wrong about this...my dragon has the skin tone...

ok i am almost setup for the studio portion...i did shoot some footage of my brother at his studio and my kids and my brothers girl friend, very unscientific...this i shot on wednesday night when i got the camera...

so before i post that...here is the directory with the prores files, kind of like the old day with the red one with proxies, but these are full on pro res 4444...ill also post a screen capture of the prores4444 playing back in finder/quicktime of the first frame i shot with the weapon...basically the view from my car on caHUENGa where rsh is...this shows the inspector with the information from the prores file created in camera.

I'm posting some pics on Instagram as I move through it. As I said a few days ago it is very simple to post stills from my iPhone as opposed to using the ru interface.

Yes they asked...I said low light.

and Dino,

thanks .
