  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Forged CF Red Weapon #000027 has been delivered to Kosmos/ dino

Hey. Just super cool you are being so generous with your time:) One thing I love is how petite the Weapon looks next to the old Dragon which I never thought looked particularly big.
How much time are you getting on those XL batteries?

boot times for my cameras..
dragon x @00031 = 35 seconds
weapon #000027 = 47 seconds

Not too happy about that, but thanks very much for posting real world info.

Red should really take down the video showing weapon boot up time being 10 seconds, not cool.

Is max temp for adaptive fan mode still 70deg like Epic Dragon, dont see it listed in the manual?

Can you tell if power save mode actually does anything on Weapon?

If you could test a contrasty 6k/FF 72 fps 8:1 compression on Weapon vs Dragon 12:1 compression that would be awesome.

Thank you for your efforts Dino!

Once you run the Auto Cal, the sensor is calibrated over the full range of exposures (from 1 sec on down) and is very stable across the cameras usable temperature range. The calibration is maintained across boots and firmware upgrades.

If you do the 16-step Auto Capture black shading, when you change FPS/shutter speed significantly is there a long delay as the black shading map is changed? For example, going from 6k/24fps 1/48 to 5k/96fps 1/1000. On Epic Dragon, when you switch between your 4 saved black shade maps it takes maybe 15 seconds to update, wondering if the weapon auto cal has the same delay when you change or if its instant.

Does T/E indicator stay green when you autocal and go from 1/48 to 1/1000 or yellow?

Is a manual black shade at a given shutter speed still more accurate if temp is constant or is auto cal exactly the same?

Triggered a question within as to whether or not the number of black shades and any other user defined settings cause the camera to take longer to boot up?

In the first video Dino posted, you can see E going yellow and then after a few seconds returning to green, so there is some latency, but did not seem bad.

There is approximately a 7 second delay when the auto calibration is taking place. The E indicator will stay yellow if the calibration hasn't converged yet.

The manual black shade will allow for a more precise calibration at a given exposure.

7 seconds sounds pretty good. The comment though about manual being more precise is a hair off-putting because I am hoping the idea is that the camera pretty much optimizes based on temp and exposure in Auto - so you can trust you are getting solid image.

That's the idea and that's what you get. Optimized settings without the hassle and you still have the option to calibrate at specific operating points.

80 mins ish

I wish you're right about that. I can see that a few parts of the design seems to be different, including processing, though.

A de-smear in RCX would be cool if it's done through processing.
But if it's done in camera before recording/encoding, that might not be plausible.
It is for sure an issue has been kept warm on since the release of the Dragon, and no matter CMOS characteristics, I would guess that was pretty high on the engineering teams priorities when re-building a camera bottom-up based on the Dragon sensor.
Alongside faster internals (which hardly is just turning the knob up a notch, as all have to play nice together), and ergonomics.

It's kinda hard to say how much change is needed while the sensor is still "the same". (or v2/v3/v4). But from the pictures released so far, it doesn't seem different enough to be a "new" sensor. If they didn't do any improvement they could while at it, it would be kinda strange, though.

See Alexa.
That is supposedly the same sensor as in 2011, but I'd be hard pressed not saying it has evolved a fair bit since first release.
Most of those evolvements have come as upgrades, and they haven't all been software.
(which BTW makes the "4 year old sensor shooting 2k baked prores" argument not so relevant as it may first seem when comparing the platforms. I wouldn't directly compare the Alexas released today with those first released. Not only because they don't only shoot prores.)

Exactly. With a complete new body design, and new boards, from the ground up...inevitably comes improved performance across the board (which in many ways, isn't that big a surprise).

Curious if the the Color aliasing has also been fixed or minimized?

That looks debayer related and could be what is causing the color noise that Zeb asked about. Graeme posted that he was looking into it in that thread. Wonder what he found.

Thank you for the offer, fortunately I am working tuesday-friday on real jobs, so i will not be able to use it, that is why i am pushing so hard now because the next chance i get might not be for a couple of weeks.

I completely understand. :) FYI - When I downloaded the R3Ds, they were corrupt as someone else pointed out.

Are the creation, and storing, mutually exclusive? Would be nice to create the autocal and then also create a custom 23.98 w/ 1/48th that is fine tuned since that is my primary rate.

The auto calibration is treated just like another calibration file, so you can have multiple manual calibrations along with the auto map.

Thank you Matt. Matt, or Dino, how many calibrations can you store on Weapon?

Currently we provide space for 1 factory calibration, 1 auto calibration and 4 manual calibrations. This may increase in the future.
