  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Forged CF Red Weapon #000027 has been delivered to Kosmos/ dino

Does a Weapon table of FPS / RC compression rates exist? Have been curious about the difference between Dragon and Weapon as it concerns high frame rate and compression improvements.

If not, Dino can you please post what you are seeing for some key FPS with the corresponding minimum compression ratios?

On the GIOscope, what I like to do is black shade so only the first level is purple across the entire sensor, since the current default is not to push the noise that far down (i.e. on the gioscope normally the first three levels are active after black shade, with the 2nd level being the dominant). Only way to push the black shade down a bit the current dragon is to black shade one stop faster on exposer (i.e. i shoot 24 fps at 1/48th, so i need to black shade at 1/96). Is there anyway to effect the black shade, so those that want to push the no information bits(i.e. first couple of lower order bits) down can with this new setup(i.e. since this exposure method will break my current method)?

Since the Auto Cal spans the entire exposure range, you will not be able to manual change your effective black level like this. However, with weapons improved low end, you may find it is much less of an issue.

Manually black shading at 1 stop faster will move you away from your optimal raw black level, which is not something I'd recommend.

This afternoon I met our spiritual and logistical leader Brent Carter at RSH in Hollywood,CA where he handed me a very stylish pelican-like case containing lots of laser-cut foam padding and one Forged Carbon Fibre Weapon serial number #000027.
Congrats Dino and thank you very much for doing the videos and pictures! Really exciting.

So Rad.
Question, The Auto Cal seems to take about 25-30min, is it taking all resolution/fps/shutter combo's into account or just fps/shutter combos based on the one resolution you're calibrating at?

Thx!!! Congrats!

all resolutions.

I don't follow, that sounds that you make a bad black shade so that you then can push down the image to get rid of noise. But doing so you also cause more noise in the first place, no?

If you black shade on the wanted exposure time you get the least noise, then if you push down the blacks or not is not changing anything if I´m not completely mistaken, or have I missed something?

Yes, it is in the updated media ops guide.

Weapon MG starts on page 86.
Weapon CF starts on page 89 for 240 GB and page 92 for 512/1TB SSD.

Looks like best case upgrading from ole skol 1.8" 128 media Dragon to 512/1T Mini Mag Weapon CF @75fps we moved from 11:1 to 6:1 when shooting 5K. Shooting Dragon with Mini Mag 512 currently gets us RC 9:1 @75fps 5K.

So:
Dragon v. Weapon CF, using the same Mini Mag media, is RC 9:1 v. 6:1 @75fps 5K
Dragon v. Weapon Mg, using the same Mini Mag media, is RC 9:1 v. 8:1 @75fps 5K

Interesting that the Epic MX with 1.8" 512 was RC 8:1 @75fps 5K

Thanks for the help and please correct my math if wrong.

Yeah Buddy!

Get after it Dino.

I will try and go through these requests tonight, I was up until 7 am shooting and posting that stuff i did last night and then running around today and taking care of a 5 and 8 year old boys...so not sure if i will have the time this evening...i know how important and what a privilege it is to have this camera and i am not taking it lightly.

Thank you Dino for shooting the video and sharing with us, I certainly appreciate it!

I am interested in fan noise from the front, say 5' away compared to the EPIC. Since the 8k will have a wider FOV, I will have to move closer for interviews and curious if the fans are noticeable. Chris commented on them being much lower. Patrick also told me he turned the fans up to 100 and they were still pretty quiet compared to EPIC. Would like to hear, pun intended, your impressions. :)

Would be cool if you can try and test for CMOS smearing. Maybe a window with the lights off in the room so we can see the dark part of the room to the left and right.

I am excited about the reduced compression for higher frame rates. I have attached images of the new rates from 6k - 5k HD. I have also inserted, but not sure they will be visible if you are not logged into OneDrive.

Just thumbnails on my end. Here's what I was looking at using 75fps 5K as a cross reference. My original Epic MX was a beast!

5 + 8yo boys and on the cutting edge of camera tech.. my kind of filmmaker :) I hear you buddy. Thanks for taking the time to share, sure it's a privilege to have the camera but it's a greater privilege IMHO for us in the longer upgrade queue to be part of an ecosystem of manufacturer, experts and enthusiasts that openly shares so much. Always makes me feel part of a close community rather than just a customer of a product. ++ one of the main reasons I've clung onto the RED bandwagon from the beginning and especially as it goes over the rough bumps and potholes of the untraveled road.

here is an update ladies and gentlemen:

I had a busy day today getting some logistical stuff done that has nothing to do with my cameras. one of the things i did do related to all of you reading this was I went by keslow and picked up my epic x Dragon #00031 along with 2 of my master primes, my 25 and my 32. so now I have the weapon, a dragon and an MX red one at my space ready to be put to the test. my goal is to spend part of the weekend shooting a bunch of things. I would like to get as many suggestions as possible about what you all would like to know. for me I am mainly interested in what i can tell my dp and producer/director clients the difference is between the weapon and the dragon as i just spent 40k+ on the upgrade and also another 20k on mini mags and i want to be able to start paying that stuff off. the way to do that is to have the camera in demand and the way to do that is to make the case for the camera as a better choice than the dragon. now when the camera turns into an 8k camera, that will be much easier, the question for the next few months is why should i use a weapon over a dragon besides the weight difference and the black shading.

stay tuned....and thanks for your patience i know there has been basically radio silence for almost 43 hours, believe me it hurts me more than it hurts you because i am the one that spent the money and needs a return asap, so i got you guys...please leave me some clear and concise and do able instructions on what you want and i will do my best with my team to execute. thanks.

Reading through this thread again is just inspiring. Really excited for all involved and always appreciate how and when you share Dino!

Got get it!

Great stuff, Dino.

I think there are 4 things that would mean a hell of a lot to quite a few.

Lowlight comparisons (at lowest possible compression)
Highlight performance.
High speed compression comparisons (yup, the dreaded tree-leaves with the sun in the background and deep focus is till possibly the best test for that)

As to prores:
Compare transcoded vs recorded prores 444. I would really not mind seeing 1080
Same goes for highspeed.

As to workflows:
If weapon can do the Alexa trick of recording RLF + CDL (instead of baked prores), that would be a great leverage for the platforms.

thank you..

i can also count on you and david being up after midnight LA time...consistency is a virtue in my eyes and you two have it, hope to meet you someday.
