  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

foolcontrol - power fool DSMC camera control

Hi Mikael,

I'm very much interested in foolcontrol for iOS... but I'd be running it on my iPad Mini Retina only. How does your UI scale for iPad use?

I will post video and pictures once it is ready...
Right now I design app for iPhone (need to support both small 4S and 5S screens) so it will work with emulated X1 or x2 scale on iPads.

Will probably release it as a universal or iPad app later on (initial release will be iPhone only) as I will anyway need to adapt to larger rumored iPhone screens...

I have some beta tester using it on iPads and will gather their feedback on real life usage... but the app has so many buttons and small details I'm sure it could also be easier for some people with large fingers to use on a iPad screen :-)

Yeah, my thumb is almost exactly the same size as an iPhone screen (a slight exaggeration) so I'd be pressing all them buttons at the same time. I'd much prefer an iPad version ;)

Might work good for you in 2x mode then (you just loose 1cm of screen surface on both edges) until I update it as a universal iPhone/iPad app :-)
And except the histogram and some UI elements it mostly a tool to displays and set values so it is not like you will miss any shinny retina sized graphics of an iPad version.

just took a screen grab on my mini (non retina) iPad of the app main page, so you can save linked file below and check it out foolscreen on your iPad...

Most if not all of the text are buttons or support gestures on this page so indeed an iPad should make it easier to hit the right one :-)

Thanks Mikael!

Mini_Retina will def be the way to go with the iOS app but having it on my phone and in my pocket is killer!

just got the redlink bridge and wanted to try foolcontrol on the desktop....i can see and select the camera in the wifi settings (in mac os) but foolcontrol does not see the camera? i keep hitting rescan local network but still gives me no camera found...am i missing anything? i am able to connect to the redlink app with my ipad just fine....the camera/redlink is set to adhoc....

To celebrate the release of RED's 5.2.28 firmware that will now let everyone use REDLink without installing beta camera FW... here are a few new features for foolcontrol OS X :

- New “Bezier smoothed” variable speed rack focus using A->M markers in AF manual mode.
(adjustable from 0 to 60 seconds, will stop as soon as you click on focus slider to continue dusting manually if needed)
- New button to toggle fine precision mode when adjusting Luma and RGB curves
- New detailed curve point value display while adjusting
- New auto open look panel preferences
- Small fix for Motion Mount discovery mode when running 5.2.28

(version 1.05, free upgrade, demo version also available to try it out)

new version 1.12 posted today :

Added : Q and W shortcuts for shutter speed/angle (Q will make it darker, W brighter… step value depends on ANGLE/TIME mode as it follow’s camera listed values for each mode)
Added : T and Y shortcuts for Motion Mount ND value (T will make it darker, Y brighter.. step value depends of camera setting for MM steps, this can only be set in camera menu for now unfortunately)
Fixed : new focus window hidden during playback
Fixed : some buttons in the settings page still had the same bug that I fixed last month for a few in the playback page. Double checked everything and looks like all are OK now. Sorry for this.

Anyone know of a small gigabit travel router that could be used instead of the redlink backpack?

Thanks

B Jonsson

I haven't found one yet so far that is small and can be powered from camera easily...

But if you can wait just a little bit more a super compact solution is coming soon from @offhollywood...

OFFHOLLYWOOD-HotBox-R-S-amp-HotLink-with-WiFi

Of course... Already works via manual IP address... But will push an update soon with the same 'smart' discovery of any nearby or previously known camera that I have in iOS version into foolcontrol OS X before Mark's cool devices hit the street.

foolcontrol OS X 1.2 released :

- Added : OFFHOLLYWOOD HOTLINK + HOTBOX R/S module auto detect
- Fixed : Minor camera notification bug

Questions...

We are trying to make our own Wifi module using a small card with wifi to RS232...

The card has tons of setup options. Now we can connect to the card via WIFI from the apple computer (wifi menu) ... the card is connected to the camera with a RS232 cable to the CTR port.

Would need some help.. to get it working.

What setup should I choose in the camera. I'm guessing: MENU/SETTINGS/SETUP/COMMUNICATION/SERIAL/REDLINK COMMAND PROTOCOL

And what should the card be set to to be able to connect with your OSX app, or is that even possible?

Sorry for stupid questions but I'm a bit out of my pond here... to say the least. :)

Yes communication menu in camera should have serial set to RCP

Your bridge should be sending 115200 bauds 8N1 (with crossed TX-RX wires)

Then you need to listen and forward everything on TCP port 1111 back and forth to serial.

If you download the latest foolcontrol OS X app (version 1.2) it should now detect your camera even if not using a REDLink bridge or RED GIG-E cable.

Otherwise you can wait a few more days and grab a HOTLink from Mark :-)
