  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FOOLCONTROL for Iphone @ IBC

Mikael, unfortunately I only have manual lenses so cannot test (besides the GDUs).
Firmware is 6.3.38

I last used the exact same Canon mount on a rented Weapon CF and it worked fine with the GDUs.

I will try to remount later.

Please let me know how it goes. If same mount worked on CF there is no reason it should not work on the E-W running latest FW (have you tried installing 6.3.47 yet ?)

I've been eyeing foolcontrol for some time now, but I've never pulled the trigger because I've only rented REDs before. Just put in my order (S-W > E-W) yesterday and pulled the trigger on foolcontrol today! Looking forward to it!

Thanks Michael !

Re-installed the mount, Foolcontrol with GDUs is working now.

One more note, it seems that RED has improved the internal Wifi on Epic-W.
Much better signal and range now with less to no drops. Once signal is lost and you get back into range, foolcontrol re-connects more quickly. Well done RED!

In the past when renting a Scarlet-W or Weapon, I always had to go the DIY route via external antenna. Looks like RED completely changed the board. And btw, you cannot access the internal antenna anymore (which really doesn't matter now).

Did you also upgrade foolcontrol today? I saw that Mikael added new and improved features.

iOS app has been released just 2 years ago (and saw a lot of updates since) so here is a small promo to celebrate the anniversary.

Hi Mikael,

I tried buying this today but it looks like the app store ended the promo a little early? Thanks!

yes, it ended up as planned after 10 days at midnight on the 12th... might have been poor wording on my poster, sorry.

Email me and I'll try to get you sorted :-)

So I'm a little confused about how the licenses work. So if I get this on my iPhone will another person in my production company be able to use the app if I'm not present on a shoot? Just curious if we have to buy this for every device we have

Hello Scott

It is like any other iOS app, you can install on your iPhone and eventually on your iPad too.

I also have a solution for rental cameras / houses that will let your team and clients install on their own device (to use the app without you having to provide an iPad with the camera). contact me for details on this one.

Mikael, can you consider the new upcoming 18-80 f4 Canon Zoom for future updates of the Foolcontrol? Maybe an integrated zoom control :)

I installed Wooden Camera Wi-Fi Side Plate on my Epic-W. Only difference with the Epic-W is that you have to peel back the tape to reveal the connector. Never tested difference between having one installed and native Wi-Fi capabilities but I guess having the Wi-Fi Side Plate can only improve it even more than it is.

Hello Enrique

foolcontrol really only talks to the camera itself (except with Latitude or other 3rd party devices in between) so there is not much I can do on my end to "support" an upcoming new lens or control an external / proprietary zoom motor before RED officially support it in the camera and protocol.

Sorry if this has been asked already. Are you planning on doing Fool Control for Android? I'm switch from iPhone to Google is why I ask.

Hello David, sorry not planned immediately for Android but the app runs fine on an iPad mini 1st gen or an iPod touch (iOS 8.1 and minimum storage) if you want and you get to keep your iPhone battery charged at the end of the day :-)
