  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

One app purchase, two phones?

Dear Mikael,
I work often in cold weather. My iPhone tens to die in the cold. Can I buy the app and install it on two differnet phones so I can alternate between them (warming one u and charging while the other is in use)?

Yes this should be allowed if your two phones are on same iTunes account.
 
Hi Mickael,

If I buy Fool Control on iphone, I can install it also on an Ipad or an Ipod?

If I want Fool Control for mac, I have to pay another licence?

And why Fool Control is a little bit more expensive in Euro (150€) than in USD (150$)?

I guess you can have it on both an ipad and iphone if you have the same itunes account for them. This is based on the #464 answer from Mikael above. But Mikael, please be kind and confirm.

mac version is a different product with an identical name ... sorry for the confusion.
and is not for sale thru any App Store... Apple system is kinda opaque as they do not even tell developpers who bought their app... just a list of sales per country every month so difficult to link both.
App Store dictates the prices and taxes in each country based on a single one I can choose but I have no control on individual prices.

Hey Mikael. I've been using and loving the fool control app but have a question about connectivity issues. The issues don't seem to be a problem most of the time but when using it on the full sized ronin it loses connection nearly everytime and says there's a communication error. It seems weird that they would interfere as the ronin app connects through bluetooth and fool control through wifi. Was wondering if other people had this problem or if there was any suggestions you could give me for making it work smoother in tandem with the ronin. Thank you so much.

How do you connect to the camera ?
If using ad hoc mode have you tried several channels ?

I'm no expert in wireless communication but have assembled tips and wifi info for dsmc 1 and 2 cameras in this document : foolcolor.net/tips.pdf

Bluetooth & 802.11G (aka Red Wifi) both use frequency Channels in the 2.4GHz range.

(I have not read Mikaels tips PDF - However if not mentioned:)

If you have a MacOS computer it has some advanced wifi interferance analysis tools built directly into the OS.

+) Connect to Weapon Wifi on Mac.
+) Option + Click on Wifi -> Open wireless Diagnostics
+) Ignore Pop-up -> move mouse to top left -> Click on 'Window' option in menu - to see a drop down of Wifi tools available to you.
+) Select 'Performance' & also 'Scan' -> oh ... how you can close the earlier (ignored) Popup.

Performance Tool : Stretch vertically - this is a scrolling health check on what is happening on the current Wifi channel

Scan Tool : Bottom right - 'Scan Now' : The Mac will scan the entire frequency range to see which channel(s) will give you the best performance.

This should take the guesswork out of seeing which channels to use.

Other thoughts : I have a 'theory' that is unsubstantiated... which is that under certain Wifi noisy conditions, there is an interaction between firmware (both Helium and Dragon FW) and WIFI interference that causes the camera to simply stop sending traffic out of the camera created (i.e. adHoc) Wifi.

The next time your wifi 'dies' -> go into the Comms menu in the camera and watch the Green 'Wifi' symbol. If you enter the menu and Wifi symbol vanishes -> goes Yelllow -> then green .... you might suddenly discover the Wifi 'works' again.

I tried it a few years ago but the resolution of the bluetooth version was very bad compared top the USB one that was already not super precise (24 steps vs 96 per turn I think)

And there was no iOS support for that bluetooth knob last time I checked :(
 
Hi Mikael!

I finally got to download foolcontrol yesterday and it was a lifesaver. The ability to switch between different display modes (Focus, Video, Edge, etc.) is way easier than on the Touch! And being able to do a remote follow focus amazed the rest of the crew haha.

I had some teething issues, but I managed to get this really stable (inside an airplane hangar!) over a 6-hour shoot and on an 18-foot jib at full extension - no dropouts at all - with the following settings.

  • iPhone 6
  • Latest Epic-W firmware
  • Wifi Channel 11
  • WPA-2 password
  • On the phone, turned on Airplane mode, then turned on Wifi only


For some reason, if I didn't turn on Airplane mode, the connection would randomly drop out and would not come back unless I restarted the camera. Turning on Airplane mode helped immensely. It's probably some interference by the Bluetooth or cellular reception, or maybe even just a bug in the iPhone. But yeah, it was super-reliable after that.

Awesome piece of software. Totally worth the money and paid for itself this shoot. Keep up the good work!
