  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FOOLCONTROL for Iphone @ IBC

I am sorry to ask this and I have read both the threads and cant seem to find the answer. What will this app cost. Approximately the same as the OSX version or more or less.
Congrats on a fantastic tool Mikael it look absolutely amazing. Quite mind blowing that this is your first iOS app.

Hello

It will cost less than the OS X version at launch. Entry price point will rise after a certain date (but upgrades for initial iPhone version will be free, only an iPad/6+ version with video feedback (more on this later) would be a different app / purchase).

Mac OS X version will always have some more advanced features and will continue to evolve in parallel with cool stuff, and even tho the focus control is much way cooler on a touch interface, I'd say most of the rest is better and easier done on a real screen with a real keyboard etc
(certainly the case for studio work or when wifi is not an possible).

-----------

As much as I'd like to sell the app for what it is really worth, I am not sure people are ready to pay "professional" software price for a "phone" app yet, everyone thinks it simply should be free... Also difficult as there is also no way of testing the app on the App Store vs the foolcontrol OS X version where anyone can test it before making a purchase decision...

I'll see how it goes... if the iOS version kills all the OS X sales and the 30% Apple gets doesn't allow me to make a decent living for my family out of this software writing thing, I can always go back to my filming job and enjoy normal sleeping time again :-)

Mikael, have you thought about exploiting the inertial sensors -both the accelerometers and the gyros- in FOOLCONTROL. Say, an example of a primitive function, one could shake the phone to start/stop recording. Bit more advanced, one could adjust focus by rotating the phone side ways and set the iris by rotating the phone around another axis. Though, the technical challenge behind such ideas lies in the required calibration process. As the sensors tend to roam, accurate and precise control by motion calls for calibration, and this might be not so handy for the user.

One may also think of a combination of the touch screen and binary recognition of rotation; The user could assign to each of the three axis a certain step and when the phone is turned quickly clockwise/counterclockwise around this axis, the focus changes forward/backwards, resp., by the amount set to the corresponding axis. This gives up to seven steps (i.e., rotation around x, y , z, their combinations xy, xz, yz, and around all three xyz axes) to set the focus by rotating the phone with the wrist.

If this is combined with (binary recognition of) translations of the phone, even more options can be built in. Notice, however, thanks to gravity, when the phone is held steady, the accelerometers show all the time a total signal corresponding with 1g, and the orientation of the phone affects how this adds up from the three accelerometer signals. This has to be taken into account making the use of accelerometers bit more complex.

iPhone 6+ version with video feedback sounds intresting!

I think that is a great idea!! I would just need a mount for one axis for the phone and could pull focus by rotating the phone! LOVE that idea!

Right now, shaing the phone will undo the last mark added (when creating focus discs).

Haven't yet looked into the gyros to see how far and how precise this could be but will give it a deep look as soon as I finish the 3-4 things on the worktable...
Have to polish the serial support I'm working on now for a specific 'ad hoc' helicopter config and have a few more stuff to finish for foolcontrol 1.1 update first but will definetly check the gyros and accelerometer soon. Gotta get a 6+ too to start looking into what we can do with the larger screen too...

foolcontrol on set in Paris...
