  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

foolcat / foolmeta - R3D catalogs and metadatas ingest

Thanks Martin for the report... Just PMed you to help identify the issue so it can be fixed.
Also let me know if you have Perian installed as I found an issue with this EOL prefpane

foolcat Version 3.0 just released.
QuickTime + R3D support, fast HTML / pdf cataloging of your clips

check it out, demo version available with 5 clips limit
(it's also free upgrade for all previous registered users)

Great work on the app as always Mikael, and appreciate it's still a free upgrade for early users!

The "dropped frames" reporting - is there a way to log the clipname of the corrupt clip - saves manually having to go through a massive list of clips to see which that might be. Does "2 dropped frames" mean two corrupt clips, or potentially 2 errors in one clip?

Also, would be nice to be able to change the first/last thumbnail 3sec offset, or set a percentage offset to take account of very short clips.

Thanks
Eric

Hello Eric and thanks for the feedback...

The dropped frames report comes from the RED file info itself. It is summarized at top so yes 2 dropped frames can either be 2 on the same clip or 1 on 2 different clips. The info on a clip by clip basis should highlight any dropped frame in red color for easy spotting in case some occured but I can add a line on the catalog to log filenames or a dialog message at the end of catalog creation.

Will see about adding an option for user settable offset in frames in next update.

Cheers

Wow - fast response Mikael!

A line on the catalog itself is preferable (goes with the report permanently to refer back to) to a dialog message if you only want to implement one warning (as there is already a dropped frame message with the Successfully created catalog message in the interface).

Cheers

I had a look at three catalogs which reported dropped frames in the summary at the top, and couldn't see any red colour highlighting in the html or pdf catalog. Is the red colour in the metadata text?

Perhaps some more prominent red highlighting of the clip name and/or the background colour of that catalog clip entry would be easier to spot when scrolling through & scanning a large catalog, especially when on a small laptop screen?

Also noticed the PDFs seem to be generated with one or two blank extra pages after the end of the catalog.

Eric,

Just posted version 3.01. It fixes the colour highlight on clips with dropped frames :

and adds automatic variable offset value (3 sec at start and end on clips over 30 seconds, if clip is shorter it is 10% of clip duration... so 1 sec for a 10s clip etc).
Let me know if you feel it should offer more option to set those value in the interface.

Thanks for reporting those. will look into the pdf blank pages...

auto index creation feature

auto index creation feature

New update (3.1) with a cool new feature :

foolcat can now automatically create and update an index page that will link to all your catalogs within a given destination folder.

It shows for each individual catalog : name, description, original path, clip count, total duration, total data size and up to 16 clip thumbnails for quick visual identification.

Several users requested this feature and it is indeed very useful to access a whole project's shooting days / cards in an easy way...

You will find the index naming and sorting options in a new preference panel... let me know if you have feedback on this new feature.

Expect new features and more free updates coming in the following days/weeks.

Mikael,

this software is so good, I think I might pay for it again. It's just gotten better and better and better with very single release.

Thank you very much!

Loving the app more and more with every update. Keep up the great work, please!

One suggestion: my workflow is currently to have each catalog in a separate folder, since I have other similar reports to include (sound reports, scripty notes, etc). So each day's files go something like this:

07.31.13
>Audio
>Camera
>Reports
>>Sound reports
>>Scripty reports
>>foolcat catalog

So in this case, the index file doesn't really work, since the destination changes every day. Any way to work around this? Maybe this is too specific of a workflow that only I employ, but it would be good to perhaps create an index file AFTER THE FACT (ie at the end of the show perhaps?), and point it to where each catalog is. Just a thought.

Keep up the good work Mikael!

Drew

foolcat 3.15 will now scan deeper into any folder so it should be able to work nicely with your folder hierarchy and I added a manual index button in the preferences so you can generate/refresh the index whenever you want.

Also fixed a bug in the way the pdf would paginate and sometimes would cut shot description onto the next page.

Mikael, great software! Thank you so much. An idea I had would be the ability to add a matte onto the thumbnails. Don't know how difficult this would be, but it would be great to be able to add it since we frequently frame for a certain ratio but shoot another. Also a possible LOG-C to Rec 709 option?

Hadn't used Foolcolor since early version 2...finally went back to it. Some really nice improvements. Fast and responsive! Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, fairly comprehensive reporting software.

Mikael, are there any plans to have definable fields at some point (kind of like Clipfinder back in the day)? So we could add information to the reports on a clip-by-clip basis?

Thanks Sean

I just pushed version 3.2 live on my server…

foolcat will now display all the custom user metadatas fields from the RMD (scene, lens, crew, various notes and info fields etc). Previous version included a few like scene, take and some notes but didn't show all of them. Theses fields are best entered in REDCINE-X when playing footage for now as I'm still not finished on my R3D/RMD batch meta editing app…

Also you can now disable the QuickTime cataloging from the preferences if you wish to only search for R3Ds, select "virtual paper" format (A4, letter, legal) for the pdf file... possibly a few more small fixes in there but can't remember them right now.

---------

Ryland : I will see if anything can be done for adding a matte and a log -> rec 709 thumbnails option. Do you need custom mattes like cropping on the sides and top/bottom or only change the vertical size (shoot 16/9 or 1.9 and letterbox to 1.85). Also if you are using in camera guides it might something to explore and have an option in foolcat to apply or not the framing values (it just ignores them when creating thumbnails at the moment, same for clip in/out points)

Mikael-
Eventually having totally custom framing controls (or at least cropping based on a Custom Frame Guide in RCX) would be phenomenal. As a stop gap, I would like to suggest a function to regenerate a PDF catalog based on already created thumbnails. This would allow us to crop/adjust/add a LUT to the thumbnail files after they're generated using something like Photoshop batch workflow, and then go back into Foolcat and recreate the PDF with the new (now cropped) thumbnails. The HTML version of course would be ready to go already (I've actually use this method previously.) While we're discussing thumbnails, I would love to also suggest the functionality of a selectable number of thumbnails (Maybe from 3 to 7, or whatever you decide would be appropriate.) I fully appreciate that this might make page formatting much more difficult and therefore be a bigger request than I'm realizing; however, having worked with directors that love to roll off very long takes, I can say that sometimes it could be very beneficial to have more thumbnails. I also like to use the thumbnails outside of Foolcat (I have a very rudimentary Filemaker database for footage in the works) and having more thumbnails is always better than fewer, for me at least.
Thanks so much Mikael. I bought Foolcat a while back when it was even cheaper, and I have to say it seems like the gift that just keeps giving.
Best,

-Harry

Thanks Harry and Eliott

I will look into framing options... regenerating the pdf is something I could add quite easily. Adding more thumbnails has been a frequent request so I have to see how to implemement that feature for next big (free) update. I am quite busy these days but will see what can be done whenever I get some some fool time...

version 3.22 released :
- fixes a bug with large (>2 GB) QT clips where vendor specific metadata was missing (Alexa, Canon...)
(Thanks Mark for reporting the issue)
