  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Focus....

So what's the most exciting feature about the Epic you can elaborate on? Obviously, there is a ton you don't want to talk about now but anything you can reveal??

What we have shown isn't exciting enough? :-)

Jim

The focus performance as Jarred moved his hand through frame looks astounding. Immediate, no hunting, cock on. It'll be interesting to see how the various speeds play out; I imagine that a slow-ish auto focus from subject to subject will prove to be a very useful feature also. And once focus pullers become confident in the accuracy/repeatability of this auto focus, it could well facilitate their set ups by providing fast and accurate data as a point of departure. And some of these auto focus idiosyncrasies will surely find their way into the image making aesthetic. Not hard to imagine uses in scenarios like the news-camera style p.o.v combat scene in Doctor Strangelove, or Saving Private Ryan, or District 9....
I look forward to seeing how S Soderbergh uses this gear in Contagion. (:

It sure is Jim! But if you would oblige --and feel like really messing with our heads-- you could show us a clip of your long coat dogs running at 120fps. If you have none with long coats I am sure any pet would get equal attention.

Please..?

I just read on CML that Alexa-Pace 3D rig weights 35kg!!!

What is the weight of Epic 3D rig?

I read that too, and someone stated that the Alexa rig would be "back to moving refrigerators" so two Epics would be like moving what?? a toaster??:001_cool:

Only posting this for fun, so please don't make anything of it, but:
Does one 5k EPIC also capture more detail than a 3D Alexa Rig..?!?!

I know, they are both amazing cameras, blah, blah, blah.

:emote_happyhappy: EPIC IS ALMOST HERE!!! :emote_happyhappy:

Ha and two epics cost less and weigh less than one Alexa:emote_happyhappy:

*also not knocking any camera they're both great but it is interesting...

There is not a camera system in the world that will out-perform Epic in 3D. But I don't need to tell you that

Right, Mark. No point telling us. You need to tell it to Jim quick for stage 2 to begin....

Glad to hear that the AF stuff is coming along nicely.

How's the lag (if any) when pulling focus on a Canon/Nikon lens with a Redmote/Redmote Pro? Is there a Lag with the iPad feed from the proxy module? Are the two together fast enough for an AC to reliably pull focus?

Hehe... I was about to write that that was the feature of Epic that I was looking forward to most. Then I started thinking of some of the other features. I don't really know what feature I'm looking forward to most.

Unless you count the accessibility of this camera to a lower middle class guy like myself as a feature!

Getting back to focus, is it possible to set AF on some point and then the camera makes its best to keep this point in focus? The other way around, if one tries to keep some point manually in focus, is there anything on the EVF/LCD that indicates the focus is precise?

It's quite easy to see that this AF focus option combined with the 5K 100fps will make quite a change in some areas of still photography such as sports. I also wonder what my wildlife photgraph colleagues will do once they realize the 100fps possibility. It makes all the difference when one becomes able to pick the right and best frame of objects that have moved quickly. Just think of a woodpecker hammering a tree while its tong gets far out of the beak or an osprey "divebombing" to hit a fish from a lake. The DSMC concept with EF and Nikon adapters is business wise a very clever move.

Focus pullers aren't going anywhere, and neither are PL mount lenses. This is all about options and the ability to have more tools to help in various situations. Some will never use AF... some will find a way to use it some of the time and some will embrace it a lot. This is better than having no option at all.

Jim

Will there be any new innovative focus assist functions in the camera for the manual PL lenses? I would think that its rather important to get the focus totally right @ 5k and a digital solution on top of the measurement tape might be very in order?! Especially since neither the Bomb EVF nor the preview screens can show you the full rez.

Major bug was destroyed. It took a long time. Now we are adding features and killing the standard bugs that show up along the way. Just like we have been doing for a couple of years now.

Jim

OK jim time to stop the adding lol. We've got more that we could ever want. its like hes got windows 7 (thats the brain) and hes trying to add ever piece of software that ever existed for windows. IT WILL NEVER END. Whats guna be awesome is when we have our cameras and jim is like ok guys heres a sweet new feature we just came up with. How about u conveniently wirelessly dl the feature and install it. Oh and did i mention its free? Now that is guna be awesome. Go red team. Im waiting :)

Seems like all experiments are going down at Red Studios Hollywood..
non-stop..at all hours of the day..:)

But weren't there plans for a Red Ranch in
Las Vegas...or has that been changed..or scaled back..

What we are doing with AF is a long process with a ton of opportunities to add possibilities. Plan on it working when the cameras are shipped. Then plan on it getting better with more options as time passes.
