  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Look - Schneider Xenon FF-Prime Lenses

I've been really happy with my set so far. Great skin tones! Nicely matched. I received my 25mm in early March and its as lovely as the rest.

Question. My set is currently set up in EF, but I need to switch them over to PL (I have all the PL mounts). I'm debating between having Abel do this (I'm in NYC) or switching them out myself.

What makes me nervous is that the Xenons use a phillip screw, instead of an allen or star head. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good torque screw driver, as I'm concerned about stripping the phillips. I love the set all around, but the use of phillip screws on the mounts seems foolish.

I only have the Pl version, but I sort of remember that shims n=may be required for the different mounts. Might be advisable to check with a house that has done this regularly, with these lenses. Duclos lenses is one option.

Thank you very much

Nick, you are correct, the shims may need to be adjusted between mounts. I am aware of this. The conversion kits come with the needed shims.

Interested in this lens set... seems like everyone is really digging these Xenons.

Quick someone make a meme for dat 25mm doe! ;)

Who's up for showcasing these @ a NAB party?

Just got the call today that my 25mm is in! Can't wait to get that baby and put it through its paces.

Loving my original set (35, 50, 75). Any news at NAB on the arrival of the 18 and 135?

Both seem to be on the horizon for next year. The 18mm is going through a moderate redesign for a few reasons. It needs to be as good as the 25mm optically, but Schneider needed to address the quality, design, and cost of the previous prototype.

The 135mm should be more of a straight arrow target as it's a heck of a lot easier to make.

Will these be the same speed? Looking at these if they can make a full set.

They have 25, 35, 50, 75, and 100mm at T2.1 today. in many ways that is a full set for larger formats.

The 135mm T2.1 is a "known" and hammered down design it sounds like.

The 18mm right now seems to be a bit up in the air. It was going to be a T2.4 lens, however, it's being worked on and anything could change.

No reason for the 18 to not be a T2.1 like the rest of the set. However they obviously have to strike a balance with it in terms of pricing and physical size and other attributes in relation to the rest of the set. As an example of an 18mm gone wrong we have the Zeiss CP version. The 18mm RPP also falls into that category somewhat in that it is a monster compared to most of the other RED Primes and it exhibits the most profound and distinct flaring of the set. The Zeiss / CP 15mm is an example of everything done right for a wide angle prime.

Would love to see the 18mm Xenon at some point and I think a 12mm would definitely be a welcome addition to the set too. I'd buy the 135 now if it were available and would also love to see a 200 and 300.

The 135 is the one I'd most like to see. I think I might buy two out of excitement. So, it looks like 2016 for that, huh?

I'm not as worried about the 18. I'd rather they get that one right and I'll pick it up when it's done. I'm more than happy with the GL 18-35 in the meantime. Thirty seconds in resolve and it matches the Xenon line-up damned well.

Thanks for the update, Phil!

New engineer fi=or the 18 and 135-given the Xenons slippage Hx, Q1 2016 estimate will be optimistic-I hope so though. I was told all parameters, except the focal length and name are in flux.

Thank you very much

My new case arrived this morning for my Schneider set from SKP. Unfortunately although the website said it was made for the Schneider's, its not. At least they have given me a free return. Just a heads up in case anyone else was thinking of buying it, I know its the only case that doesn't ship from the US.

Well damn. I was just looking at that case. Anybody else have any compact case thoughts?

Hi Phil!

You have seen the case that Matthew Duclos provided for my 5 Xenons and Tokina 11-16 (with pad cut out) and it works a treat for me. I did receive a blue case from Schneider as well, but just put it on the shelf, as the one I have been using is just fine.

Thank you very much

Hi Matt,

This one is one of the two Prototypes I got form Schneider to test... I really love it, and the final Production unit will be even better.

I'll post news of the final Production unit when I can, unless some one else bits me to it if I am shooting and out of site... ;)

And btw, I had promised to leave one of them to Phil, and completely bypassed me during the last days of stay in LA, and forgot to leave him on... Sorry Phil, I know you would have done a great review of it!!

Any news about Schneider 95mm True-Match Vari-ND filter?

It took a hot minute, but it's time to put glass where my mouth is:

25, 35, 50, 75, 100mm T2.1 Xenon-FF Primes added into my glass arsenal. 18mm T2.4 and 135mm T2.1 down the line, hopefully early 2016, and getting a slightly longer lens modified to exist with this set shortly.

Dragon 6K today. Weapon Dragon 8K VistaVision in the future.

That's awesome Phil. How do you see yourself using these, considering you already have a full set of Xenar III's? Prep for Vista? Do you see them replacing the Xenar III set? I'm on the market for some ff lenses and am desperately hoping for more Otus lenses, with a full cine mod hopefully. Though this set looks right up there.

Phil how do you put the PL mount on? Do you use that black ring that comes in the PL kit too or just the PL Mount?
