  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Look - Schneider Xenon FF-Prime Lenses

Just a quick confirmation of what Phil is saying: I just got word from Schneider today that the 18mm, as well as the 135mm are indeed still in development and should be released early 2016. If both lenses perform like the 25mm, they're going to be a no-brainer. I just love the 25mm and have the subjective feeling that it's noticeably better than the 35mm in terms of CA, for example.
Can't wait for the 18mm.

My babies are finally together! Thanks to Ketch for hooking me up with these!

Had my foam custom-made(sent the 25mm over for measurement) by mycasebuilder, put into the Nanuk 940 in yellow. Love the case, feels more solid than Pelicans.

My pleasure as always Zhen,

And yes I do like the Nanuk cases better then Peli cases no doubt, but like the HPRC even better, and not just because they are made in Italy... :)

Hi Rupert, do you know what model of Pelican case is it? Looks like a 1510 I guess...

It's the 1510 yes I'll put up a photo next week when I get back home. Overall I'm fairly impressed with the case. The holes have the same diameter all the way down so I'm guessing it's designed for front down positioning of the lenses but you could do either.

Ok, thanks Rupert. I think I´ll buy the HRPC 2600 (made in Italy) which is the approximate equivalent to the Pelican 1510. These two brands have quite similar prices. The Canadian Nanuks look nice too, but are some 20% more expensive.

After a lot of research I decided to start building a kit of Xenon FF Primes. I purchased the 35mm first in EF mount. It is a really great lens and there's a lot to like about it, like the cinematic creamy look, but the CA really made me decide against continuing down the Schneider path. I think it's my personal taste, but I just don't like the image quality enough to deal with the CA.

I'm looking to sell a practically brand new 35mm EF mount lens. I only used it for some test shots when I received it, before deciding it wasn't really for me. If anyone's interested, I'm willing to give a great deal on it.

The 35 has by far the most CA of the set. Haven't seen much with the rest of the set. Really, for the money, you will not find a better set that covers full frame.

What other lenses would you consider?

To be honest I wouldn't at this time. The Xenons are the best option for full frame since the set has consistent t stops, color matched, full on cinema lenses from the ground up versus the other still lenses made to work in cine housings (aka CP.2's and CNE's). They also cover 25, 35, 50, 75, 100 and soon the 18mm. Changeable mounts is another bonus. The fact that the Xenons can be had for cheaper is also a huge bonus. Until the ART series gets cinevised and a full set released, there really isn't another option in this price range that will cover full frame. You will want full frame for Weapon and beyond. I've used the Xenons on a dozen projects now and they are an amazing value in terms of full frame cine glass. Definitely worth the investment.

I would say the Zeiss Compact Zooms are better and a similar price for the same focal ranges as the Xenons, have interchangeable mounts etc. The 28-80 has almost no breathing as well.

Of course they are T2.8 (56% as bright, not quite a stop) and twice as heavy (though lighter as a set) so it depends on what kind of situations you'll be shooting in.

Can't use the CZ's on a gimbal, but you can the Xenons. The 28-80 is an excellent lens, but it's also HUGE.

Phil,
Have you heard anything about additional focal lengths? 40mm and 65mm would make great additions.

We'll have to see where Schneider goes after the 18mm and 135mm really. That pretty much makes this a full set of glass. 40mm and 65mm would be nice especially 40mm, but I think the priority is to flesh out those major focal lengths first. IBC is around the corner though.

Next up after the 18 and 135, I'm hoping for a 14, or even a 12 would be better. Then follow that with a 40 and a 60. Would love the 60 to have macro ability.

I just wrapped up on a 2.5 week shoot in San Francisco, shooting 10 spots for 3 companies, all on the Schneider Xenon FF EF mount on my Canon C300. I was really impressed by the optics, especially when using a 1/4 BPM, the bokeh was so nice. I'd definitely rent them again.

I know this has probably been asked and answered a few times. I have been considering buying a set of either Xenons or Xenars and already have a set of Canon Cines and CP2s. Is the c.a issue absent on the xenars.... and by how much are they sharper?
