  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So... Red Dragon. The time is getting near.

Lets get our crowdsourcing on. What do you guys think will be the big reveals at this years NAB in regards to Dragon?

I am guessing 1600 native ISO, an extra stop in the blacks, and extra stop in the highlights to give around 15-15.5 stops of DR.

My 2 cents.

Ouch... that sounds delicious... If only 1/2 of that were true... :P

oooh.... internal ND's would be nice... and some one to have the bomb and the EVF going at the same time... or through a switch to swap from one to another would be cool.

ooops... DRAGON.. A chip cant do that. :) I was thinking a camera ungrade for a second.

yes, 1600 iso with built in ND3 would be nice. So we can pull down a stop without matte box. I guess they can not fit a much bigger sensor then full frame within the epic housing but to me a huge sensor with RED tech behind it would be the best. I think when large format digital film cameras starts to show up those epic's that we have today will feel like DV or super8. imagine a 10x5 cm sensor or such that would be very epic, or even 10x10 and then anamorphic x2 digital lenses.... swung...

+1 for built in ND! and better DR and better low light, actually those 3 are enough :)

I think a Full Frame sensor at 6K or 8K would be awesome, but please have a BADASS down sampled 4K mode as well!
I don't like the crop in resolutions, as they aren't as sharp and your just losing resolution (from my experience a GH2 is sharper than Epic at 2K),
but if we had an 8K sensor that down sampled in camera to a beautiful pristine recorded 4K, no one could say shit about it, even the neigh-sayers.

Hey Ivan!

Just got the camera a month ago! I'm trying my best not to be lusting for another piece of gear so soon! :)

Personally I second for extra Dynamic Range, but since I love to shoot using Street lighting at night here as often as possible- Macau is gorgeous at night!- I would like some sort of clever noise management until ISO 3200. I don't need more than that. Extra frame rates would be good at 5K, 300FPS 5K at red code 10:1 or 12:1 would be enough, for me... As for FUll Frame vs APS-H... Would I like to see a full frame sensor? Well, why not? As long as there was an internal "crop"- like current Nikon DSLR's- to use PL and APS-H or C lenses, I cannot see why not going this route! It Would be a way to truly cement the DSMC revolution in both the photography and cinema fields...

In terms of priority, for my needs, would be:

1- Better noise correction (ISO 3200 noiseless or at current ISO 800 levels)
2- Better native dynamic range (15 stops are more than enough for me)
3- Faster frame rates at 5K (300fps red code 12:1? )
4- Still optimized mode
5- Longer charge Redvolts that fit on the excellent side handle!! (uoops, that's not part of the sensor, sorry about that :)

Sincerely, I'm really nitpicking here. I love my Epic and cannot believe the images I'm getting out of it. But for the sake of evolution, these are my 2 cents!

Some people here really don't know what they are talking about.

Also Laco you are totally right, it's already available to order...

RED DRAGON SPECS:

Twin Shaft ejectors to spit FIRE on the competition's ASS... he he.. sorry couldn't help myself... ;)

Id like to see a 35mm full frame sensor, that would be very cool (or dare I ask for 645....). I'm not sure more DR is a good thing, that's what lighting is for and we need to keep our gaffer/grips brothers on the job. Faster frame rates are always welcome.

Skin tones.
Latitude & less noise.
Less rolling shutter.
Not having to do so much black shading calibrations.

That's all I want :)

Lytro 28k version woud be fun too.

Go Dragon Go RED

internal IR pollution fix and/or ND options plz…

I doubt it will happen soon (the design of less [filtering] is more -> do it in post or at the matte box stages speaks against it)...
But the IR pollution stuff really annoys me (since the original M sensor to be honest), especially because it's something that can't be easily fixed in post once recorded.
I know there are ways to avoid it but the handling of the camera would be much easier if I don't have to care about this stuff…

just a rant - I know in the end it comes down to "user error"…

I'm anticipating Dragon to be a sensor and hardware upgrade. It will be interesting to see how it scales on the Epic and Scarlet.

Personally I'd love a FF35 (width primarily) sensor in there. I think 3:2 is a just a sexy format for IMAX and several other common motion picture crop factors. However, I can see many reasons towards staying at 2:1-ish. At around 36mm wide we could see a max resolution landing between 6K-9K. At the high end 9k is close to the original "game plan" for a FF35 sensor. However, handling 9k material is going to be interesting with media costs being what they are. I would expect to Red to update Redmag SSD prices this year to stay a bit more competitive with what's coming on the horizon, but that's up to them. If there will be a higher capture resolution, expect Redmags of 512GB and 1TB to exist very quickly.

I think a 6k sensor would yield better noise performance rather than 9k. I don't think it will be exactly 6k if that's the case. Something like 6.6k will likely be the target. If we are targeting a 4k finish, this makes a lot of sense.

6k-9k FF35 would be great for still shooters for sure. Dynamic range increase would also be great. I'm pretty damn impressed with DR from Epic and Scarlet already and we have HDRx in there for insane situations right this second. Built in ND would be great, but not a deal breaker for me. Having the DR in camera to shoot ISO 50-6400 would be killer though.

Whatever increase in maximum resolution, I'd like to see both cameras capable of capturing motion "at speed" at the max available resolution. Meaning 24fps, 30fps, or *wishful thinking* - 48fps.

For example:
Epic Dragon = 6.6k 120-160fps max
Scarlet Dragon = 6.6k 30-48fps max

That would put Red well ahead of what's coming in the next 2 years. Hope we land close to that.

Well said!!!!!

Guys, there is no way of any resolution increase soon.

More resolution is a sort of big trap for the latest de-Bayer algorithms...
