  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First Look: Interchangeable OLPF on Dragon

So the main difference will be visible in the red's and magenta's? Those seem to have the most variance, but even then not by much.

Pretty much. And that's where that slight concept of it the STH OLPF being the "Skin Tone - Highlight" OLPF comes from. I'll be doing more tests with deep filtration and all that and suspect more and more you'll see color variances there.

The LLO OLPF has visible improvements over what we now call the V1 OLPF. They are subtle welcomed improvements. General color seems a bit tighter and the Highlight Orb effect is nowhere near as harsh.

I'm fascinated by this actually. I can't wait to do some night time shooting and really hit it with some car headlights and what not.

Yeah, that new orb is pretty inoffensive compared to the original. I don't mind it at all like the original. And if it could be completely eliminated with a hot-mirror or the MM then all the better. Looking at that color swatch, it looks well within the capability of a 3DLUT (ColorScience) to correct. Maybe it's not preditable, due to cross talk, but I would be curious to see a side-by side after Graeme gets some more time with the new LL OLPF. If the color can get close I will take the extra 1+ stops in the shadows any day, I can always apply ND outside and I almost never shoot below F/6 into the sun so the sensor reflection has never been a problem for me. .

Definitely looks like there's been a tweak for the better.

But that's kinda what we have come to expect. If RED could and did make it better, then that makes perfect sense in the sense of how they do things. Why not improve it?

Generally the STH chips look more mottled to achieve their color, but it's not really fair to say that in uncontrolled lighting.

When the chips are under controlled lighting, it will be interesting to see the results.

Not sure where a standard would fall with these two offerings, curious too to see what happens to the top end in the lowlight OLPF.

Once we committed to the swappable OLPF it gave us the opportunity to dial each OLPF into getting the best image from a specific use case.

Things have become alot more interesting ..and some of the 3rd party OLPF modules that 3rd parties are working on are pretty incredible. From the clinical all the way to the lost-your-mind artistic.

And Phil.. you are one badass motherfucker. Thank's for putting in the effort here.

Heh. Thank you Jarred. Those are some nice words. Makes my day of going through lingerie fittings for the next shoot even better!

Looking forward to a Low Contrast / Standard OLPF combo.

Slight halation, filmic images.

Hot damn this is all very cool. The new lowlight OLPF is what I want in my battle-tested dragon I have coming. I had requested the V1 to my bomb squad rep and was told there is an indefinite wait, but now I wonder if I need to clarify that I want the new version lowlight OLPF. Are they even offering the original v1 or is any request for v1 automatically upgraded to the new lowlight version?

If you want to check out some heavy car headlight flares with the V1 OLPF, here's a video that i shot in early February when my Dragon first arrived. Was a low/no budget music video and for me a camera stress test (as well as being a kind of 'piss take' on fashion films). We didn't have lights so when night fell we used the car headlights, but some of my favorite shots made use of those 'orb flares'. Not always what you want, but I thought it made these shots more interesting, and decided to embrace it:

Totally deserved :)

...and nice to know you take such care over what you wear to set ;).

Phil thanks for going out of your way to provide this camera geekness to all of us, you rock! ;)

Jarred thanks for being a bad ass mofo and continuing to improve everything RED :)

thats great. It will be nice to see a color IR for diagnostic black light imaging. This is a requirement for some art restoration photography, which we see a lot in Florence. Until now guys would have to send their nikons off to get modded and carry a few camera bodies. Now, my dragon can go from Gucci one day to a restoration studio the next.

Its great that you've extended this to some third parties. Everyone wins. Hope I can get mine off to London soon.

And phil definitely wins the reduser badass motherfucker award, it could be named after him. The Phil Hollald badassmotherfuckeraward reduser community service award. Has a nice ring to it. :)

Heh. I will always have my work gloves on even in that sexy garb.

Alright, so here's sort of what everybody wants to see. An ISO Rating Texture comparison between the Low Light Optimized OLPF and the Skin Tone - Highlight OLPF across the ISO range. I left D.E.B. out of this party to keep things "vanilla", but D.E.B. can be utilized to effect things slightly of course. And that goes for A.D.D. as well.

First handful of shots are from the Skin Tone - Highlight OLPF graded at ISO 500. After that everything is labelled. You'll see two of the same ISO and properly exposed shots next to each other with the OLPF labelled in the corner.

This is a 1GB download of an H.264 file, which isn't the best quality thing out there, but the 4K ProRes HQ is um..... bigger than what I'm putting up on my web server at 21GB.

Enjoy.

I'm currently uploading the 4K ProRes file to YouTube. It's gonna be a while.

Please do. A fully functional hassle-free General Night SHot OLPF is what I, and I imagine many other people - are waiting for in order to upgrade, and "bad-orb-absense" is key for that.

Exactly. The shot I posted was just a sample setup to get an idea. I wanted to see if flashlights pointed at camera gave off the orbs in these low light/ high contrast situations.
