  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Final Cut Pro X Released

This is even funnier than the Conan piece...

From Pogue's blog (http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/23/professional-video-editors-weigh-in-on-final-cut-pro-x/): UPDATE: Link is down; not sure if that was deliberate from NYT or not
Complaint: Can’t export EDL files. These are Edit Decision Lists: a 30-year-old, ASCII-text, single-video-track export file format that can be moved from tape machine to tape machine, in order to continue working on a project on another computer. FCP no longer imports or exports them.

Answer: No solution in sight. Plenty of video-editing companies still traffic in EDL files, but Apple thinks these crude files should be retired. There are much better formats (read on).

For all the rest of the missing features, the answer seems to be: "We'll bring that back someday" or "We're counting on someone else to fix that for us someday". Oh well, at least we can import from iMovie, so I guess they got the important stuff in there for the release...

PS - Pogue is an Apple fan boy - everyone understands that up-front, right? http://idratherbewriting.com/2009/09/07/ny-times-criticized-for-letting-pogue-maintain-apple-bias/

Anyone remember new Coke?

Interestingly, New Coke was kind of an isolated phenomenon. Pepsi was consistently beating them in double-blind taste tests, even when Coke ran the tests. So they developed the New Coke flavor in response. But it turned out (who could've known?!), taste tests weren't such an accurate way of judging taste. The sweeter taste was better at first, when the subjects only took a sip, but if they drank a can or two -- which is how people normally drink it -- people still preferred the less-sweet taste of old Coke. So they sheepishly brought it back.

Come to think of it, the analogy might be more appropriate than I thought at first...

This thing may be a toy now, but its a bloody powerful toy.
Playing around with some color match and skimming through different looks one to another all without stoping playback, is damn good fun.

Those guys at Apple are sure smart. Their 300 dollar toy has maxed out my Core 2 MBP.
Looks like Ill have to drop the coin on a new Sandy-i-whatever just now.
Brilliant.

Complaint: No support for RED digital cameras. The RED camera is a favorite of filmmakers; it records incredibly high-resolution video directly to a hard drive. But FCP X can’t import its files.

Answer: Apple is working with RED to create a plug-in that will give native RED support to FCP X. In the meantime, you can set your RED camera to shoot and capture video in the QuickTime format, which FCP X imports just fine. Or you can use RED’s free conversion program, which converts its own files into the Apple ProRes format, which FCP X loves because it’s so much faster and easier to edit than the native RED files.

I never knew the RED camera can record quicktime video files. I'll have to upgrade my firmware. Pogue should stick to the iPad and iPhone.

Funny how he also touts the upgrade price of Automatic Fuck being $200... without stating that purchasing it brand new cost $500. HaHa... my God he must be doing this on the behalf of Apple. He's writing about stuff he knows nothing about.

In all fairness, I believe he is referring to the QT proxies.

Yeah I tried loading those proxies into FCPX... they don't work. He said, "you can set your RED camera to shoot and capture video in the QuickTime Format". There is no way to set and record your RED camera to capture video in Quicktime format. The proxy files are not video files. It's obvious he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I just do not understand why Apple is communicating with us through the tech columnist for the New York Times. Boggles the mind...

Because to do it officially through Apple is probably a bigger PR hit. Better to have a guru set the record straight on a few things, take some of the heat off (or try to), and then in due time make the updates they see fit. My guess is they don't feel like they have much to apologize for right now. They may be full steam ahead, willing to take some heat in order to make the dramatic changes they feel will be better in the long run. Despite the lack of communication, which still leaves me scratching my head, I do believe this is going to take some time to settle. Too hard to know just yet. Everyone needs some time with the app and we need to see some updates. There's really not much else to do right now.

I haven't tried it yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't work. RED probably needs to update their FCP package for X. If that's the case, or if it's simply not working for a different reason obviously David was wrong and didn't even try it.

At least get a "guru" who's a professional editor, or understands the software and workflow needs of a collaborative post house. If this is intended to speak to consumers, good choice. Otherwise - not so much.

I really think it was intended to speak to Apple stockholders.
