  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FCPX Update

The export XML function creates (you cannot export an XML from inside a timeline by the way, have to highlight a project from the project library) files with a .fcpxml extension which nothing but FCP X knows what to do with. Right now I'd really like to be able to export something from X into Color and Color has no idea what a .FCPXML file is. So does that mean I have to wait for Apple to update Color, if they ever do?
Have you tried it with Resolve?

I've updated my foolcut_AE script, it now works with FCP 10.0.1 and also adds audio Role support in After Effects

The 'rich' fcp xml format is very different from the old FCP 7 xml so is not compatible (won't work as is with color, resolve etc).
I'm working on a translator for FCP X <-> FCP 7 xmls and I guess many other will give it a try.

This 'Rich' xml format is much more limited (feature wise) than what I'm using to send projects to AE but seems a zillion times easier to parse...

some features like blending modes, flip/flop (or effect parameters in general), static and animated properties for scale, opacity, anchor points are not yet included in the 'rich' xml it seems.

My FCPX to AE script can also relink either to original files or optimized files (like H264 from DSLRs converted to prores by FCPX) or R3D footage, and I'll keep on adding features on user's request.

I'm pretty happy.

This is more or less what I expected to happen.

I do wish they hadn't played games and released an FCP 7 compatible XML export. I still want that - and yes we all know it will be a subset of the .fcpxml features. That's cool ... just give us an export option for FCP 6/7 xml.

As Mikael points out though the XML being spit out now should be pretty parsable ... I expect we'll see support for it in Premiere Pro and Resolve pretty quickly.

That said ... at least it takes imports. I'm curious what XML i/o bugs you all run into during testing.

Now ... broadcast i/o devices. Get that done and I'll finally be able to use it for more than toying around.

I would expect that RED would be creating an SDK for FCP X.

I am sure that RED wants the R3D file format available in the software especially with so many camera's hitting the market.

It's best to be available to as many NLE's as possible.

RCX integration will be great as well.

r3d's in FCP X will be amazing, just not sure how RCX style controls might be implemented in FCP X.

Probably looking at the spring 2012 earliest for sure after broadcast monitoring support is added.

I wonder how much r3d can be helped with 64 bit and all the GPU acceleration?

I had to trash the old version as well.

Davinci Resolve Lite reads this format apparently. :)

i'm guessing RCPX style controls would be available in the "info" area of FCPX. There's all kinds of metadata in there, some of which contain drop-downs or areas to change information.

From Larry Jordan:

"Retaining In and Out points for clips in the Event Browser is undergoing a debate in Apple."

Who are these morons at Apple arguing that In and Out points SHOULD go away when you click on something else?
Why are they not fired yet?
And why does anyone here want to defend them and/or give them money?

My friendly 2c :)

the apple way of trying/forcing pro's to melt with consumers sucks badly.
started with killing the express slot on te 15 inch with a SD slot.
the 15 with slot was perfect for on set use in mobile situations.
the next macpro will be the decision point.
more slots and native connectors is wished here. if not, avid amd resolve work pretty fine
on a cheap PC too. another 2cents.
edit: i dont want to waste time with workarounds because of stupid decisions by some apple dudes.
maybe fcpx will become great in the future. for sure is, that its not today, but my projects are planned for today (next 6 months)

We get it. A lot of people hate FCPX... fine, good. I want you to have your opinion.

For the rest of us who see its potential and want to make it great (remember Red One Build 12, anyone?) can we please be constructive around here?

If I am not mistaken, you can save any clip with any in/out points and you can do it multiple times with the same footage - effectively creating infinite variations on sub-clips - just by assigning a keyword to the selection. I know it's not "the way we've always done it" but ...??

I think that qualifies as an incredible kludge and workaround for something that was poorly designed in the first place.

Think what you like... it is very powerful and very flexible; and, being metadata-oriented, it fits well into the editing environment that is being created by FCPX. Whatever floats your boat.

I like the fact that one clip can have as many diff tags attached. Hated having numerous in/out clips dragged from Viewer to Browser :P

Read this thread.

It went from people sharing information to people hating on Apple.

If you want to drop a hate on, start a new thread and keep this one clean.

While there are people who are learning and using the software others still want to hit it with a baseball bat.

I get it, but its been to many months to carry all that anger.
