Monkey Extract Questions

I have a question regarding custom folder names. What's the equivalent of using --makeSubDir with redline?

I want to set the subfolder name to whatever the red file name is (without .RDC). Is this possible with ME?

We haven't implemented this yet unfortunately.
You can expect to see this in a future release though.

Cheers
Craig

I'm sure you've answered this a thousand times now but can anyone let me know what the typical processing time is for Monkey extract to make pro-res HQ or SQ? I'm curious if people could let me know their ratio of footage time to render time and what settings they use for debayer quality. the production I'm working on decided to go with monkey extract in lieu of log and transfer, and they are stunned at how long the transfer takes. something like 38 hours for 40 minutes of footage at half or quarty quality debayer. That's on a 2.2ghz MBP. They are going to upgrade the system but want to know how long it should typically take on an 8 core.

thanks, Sorry if this is a redundant question all over the forums. Please send me a link if you know of a helpful one on this topic.

Hi There,

Try the 3.0 alpha on my signature.
You should get the same speed as Red Rushes using that version as it now runs multiple instances of redline.

Actual render times vary widely depending on hardware and render settings so it is hard to give you a benchmark.

Hey Craig,

I was never really able to do a round trip project via DPX. Is this fixed in Final Cut Studio 3?

Say I had an XML from a FCP timeline, then I extracted a DPX using Monkey, if I use that relink XML Monkey made and opened that in Color, Color Never saw it as DPX sequence, always as Quicktime. So it never worked.

No matter what format I tried in the original FCP timeline, I was never able to use that XML from monkey linked to DPX sequences in COLOR.

Is FC studio 3 better at this now?

qMaster

qMaster

Hi -

I use Monkey Extract to do rushes over qMaster. It works great. I was wondering where the setting was that controls how many instances of the render occur at once. Currently it always seems to render 8 processes only utilising two of the computers in the cluster and not using the third machine at all.

How do I change this behaviour?

Cheers

Hey Guys, having a problem... I'm on a show that used proxies. I've exported a XML and ran it through ME and brought it into Color. But the timeline in Color doesn't match the FCP timeline at all. It seems to have pulled the wrong In/Outs of each clip. Please Help!
In the meantime, I'll work to find some solution as well. Thank you!

Looks like the XML from FCP is giving the wrong TC handles, this show used proxies, any thoughts?

Multi-clips were the problem! Fixed!

Last time I tried though my DPX sequences were opening fine in COLOR. I'll have to check that again. Originally there was a bug where the frame number for the first dpx frame was not added to the filename. This caused a few problems. When was the last time you tried? (and what version?)

You can change the number of "services" offered by each node from system preferences > apple qmaster. Click the "options for selected service..." button and you can change the "number of instances".

Hope this helps.

Craig,

What are the chances that Monkey Extra can take advantage of RED ROCKET to render? The first SDK doesn't seem to include the REDLINE with RED ROCKET, but are you hearing any future support?

Frame Range rendering script

Frame Range rendering script

Hi,

I'm running my renders using a qube controlled farm and would like to appropriate my DPX by frames instead of by timecode. At this point the export script option defines all in and out points by timecode; is it possible to get frames instead?

thanks,

Hi John,

Currently there is no option to do this.
I can add it to the list for consideration, but I can't give you an ETA on this at present.

Cheers

that'd be great. seems like it shouldn't be too hard to have an option to pull of the frame in and out columns from the EDL or XML rather than TC, no?

Here's the workflow we're trying:

metafuze (pc)
- convert r3d to DNxHD mxf plus ale
avid (mac)
- copy mxf to avid drive, import ale, reconnect, edit
- export filmscribe xml
monkeyextract (mac)
- browse to r3d folder, browse to xml
- Start Render , see thumbnails, Select all and Send to RedCine XML, hit Send to RedCine button
redcine (mac)
- import, load all r3d
- open, select redcine.xml

Result is "failed to load construct."

All flavors of edl we tried resulted in "Unable to find any matching footage!" in monkeyextract. But the xml seems to connect to the source r3d files correctly.

I'm hoping to get the avid timeline reconstructed in redcine, so I can render out a full-quality 2k or 4k dpx sequence, that matches the avid edit, to import into After Effects.

Thanks for any help!

As a follow-up to my own post, is there a way in monkeyextract to just render out the avid timeline as dpx? That is, not each shot separately with contiguous frames numbers, but just the frames in order as they are in the avid cut? I think my editor called this "A mode" in reference to an edl.

Hi Jance,

A couple of users have had this problem.
This is likely to do with the path to the footage vs. the path to the aliases.
Can you please send me an email at support@rubbermonkey.co.nz and let me know where the aliases are saved to and also where the original footage is located (network? system drive? local external drive?)

Thanks
Craig

We can't do this yet unfortunately.
It has been discussed though.
