  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Monkey Extract Questions

Hi Jance,

A couple of users have had this problem.
This is likely to do with the path to the footage vs. the path to the aliases.

Redcine has also never liked any directory names with spaces in them anywhere in the path (neither does Red Rushes).

So with Craig's help, I'm making progress with the demo version.

Does anyone know how I can expect xml, monkeyextract, and redcine to handle things in the avid cut like speed changes and clips in reverse, etc?

Aside from Automatic Duck, should I expect to be able to recreate a complex avid timeline via xml?

Thanks for any help!

- Jance

Hi there,

I have an issue when trying to import the xml re-link file that monkey makes. It opens fine if I de-select 'audio/video effects' but hangs on 80% loading when its checked. I really need video effects to work, so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Here's my workflow specs:

1. Flattened all video layers in FCP 6 > Export XML
2. Rendered XML in Monkey using Quicktime ProRes & time of day setting. No issues.
3. Import xml re-link file into FCP.

thanks for your help

Have you guys seen a improvement of bringing in DPX files to Color without relinking all the media again? I remember you all saying it was because of the FCP XML, any luck with FCP 7/COLOR 1.5?

Changing font size for burn in

Changing font size for burn in

How do I go about changing the font size of the burn in. There doesn't seem to be an option to do so. A lot of editors want the smaller fonts.

Any answer on this?

Yes, It can,.. it will try to match your primary time reference first and fall back to the other if it can't find a match.

It will list all the clips that needed to use the alternate time reference after matching so you can see what is going on.

Essentially that means that if you choose Edgecode in Monkey Extract and there is another (incorrect) clip that matches using Edgecode it will not attempt to match via Time of Day.

Cheers
Craig

Hi Mark,

You can't do this in Monkey Extract at this point.
We left out some burn-in options to keep the user interface simple.

I'll add it to the list for later versions.

An update for everyone else.

Not sure why that particular XML was hanging on Relink, but if we imported the XML without relinking files and THEN relinked by selecting the timeline it all worked fine. This isn't usually necessary. A bit of an odd one.

I Just tried this now (using the latest FCP studio) and it all worked fine.
I had it working prior to upgrading though, so I don't think it is a new version improvement (I tweaked the FCP XML a few versions back).

I'm not seeing the problem where only the first frame is showing up per clip.
Here's my workflow for the test.

1> Render rushes from to QT ProRes keeping red filenames intact.

2> Drag rushes into FCP and create timeline

3> Export XML file from FCP

4> Load XML into Monkey Extract (v3.008)

5> Render with the following settings
Format - DPX
Set DPX Reel name to match folder (ticked)
Set DPX header frame rate to match (ticked)
Render only frames used
Folders - One folder per clip
File Names - Red file names
Create New EDL or XML... (ticked)

6> Create a new project in color and import ..._for_relink.xml

Using this workflow every clip loaded correctly - no issues.

Thanks for the info - just to be clear, we may have at online from an EDL or FCPXML some clips with the TOD TC (vast majority) and some with edgecode (render error which is way too late to correct). Monkey will handle it?

Yes :)

If you need a full trial version to test for yourself, send me an email at support@rubbermonkey.co.nz and I'll sort one out for you.

Hi, there.
I have a question about the way of rendering.
I know Monkey Extract can use distributed rendering with Apple Qmaster.
I want to know the speed of it.
For example, 4K R3D to 2K dpx files.
Please tell me the instances about yours.
Additionally, I want to know the example information how many machines do you use for distributed rendering?

Hi There,

Monkey Extract uses Redline (from Red Alert) to render footage.
This is the same when using QMaster.

In terms of raw Render Speed you will get the same output potential as if you were running Red Rushes on each box (although with Monkey Extract you need to render less footage) since you will typically be running one redline instance per CPU core on each mac.

Render speed on a render farm is typically limited by your IO capability and/or network bandwidth rather than how many CPUs you can throw at the job since each computer is usually sharing a network connection to shared source data and also to your final output destination... we use a fibre-attached RAID here for this.

I'm not sure how useful it is to to compare speeds to what we get here at Rubber Monkey since render speed with a render farm depends on your entire hardware infrastructure... not just the raw render capability of each box. The render settings you use in Monkey Extract make an enormous difference as well.

The best way is for you to try it yourself.
If you send me an email at support@rubbermonkey.co.nz I will send you a full featured QMaster trial license and you can see how well it works for you.

Cheers

Thank you for your reply. As you said, I knew that render speed depended on circumstance. But I couldn't try it because I thought that I needed Qmaster on each Mac.You taught me, Monkey with Redline could use it instead of Qmaster. So, I will try it.If I need, I may request you sending trial license. Then, please cooperate.

Sincerely

Please send me an email at support@rubbermonkey.co.nz and I will email the license key to you.

You WILL need to install the QMaster "render service" (as well as redline) on each computer as well so that QMaster can talk to the other computers.
You will find this on your Final Cut Studio installation disks I think...
Your existing Final Cut Studio license will cover installation of QMaster services on all of your computers so you won't need to purchase additional Final Cut licenses for this.

Thanks,
Craig

Craig - when will Rubber Monkey take advantage of Red Rocket to speed up conversions, et al?

It's such a pleasure using your software.
