Fantastic News For Red One (Mx) Users!! Is That Real ?!!

@ Robert,

But we are not talking about money here, but about a real problem that i'm tired to explain: "The Red one Mx is a professional cinema camera destined to shoot "Movies", since recently, Red does offer no "Serious media solution" for Red one Mx Cf owners as they don't sell SSd modules anymore, and the only solution we have is to buy their 16gb Cf cards. The problem is that a 16Gb Cf card allows to record no more than 8mn, let's be serious, i didn't bought a Cinema camera to shoot Vines videos.
..
Did you know that for 11 decades movies were shot with media (film) that typically had to be reloaded every 4-10 minutes?
And it was not an absolute that projects would use the 10 minute reels at all times?
those reels cost 200-600 per expendable roll of film!
I have an SSD module and red drives.. I would add a CF side module, at the right price, if 64gb cf cards were supported at 4k...but I am not bothered by the SSDs at all..having one on my camera helps integrate it into a shoot with an Epic or Scarlet

This discussion has been had a lot. someone said professional projects are still being shot on the RED one.. That is exactly the arguement red uses as to why it will not certify 3rd party media.

Buy used, or get a Scarlet, or hope red will come out with a new batch of media.

But 3rd party? Nope.

We offer the $10 000 of SSD mags we bought as part of a rental package (we charge for rentals even if it is us shooting the gig), which in the minds of clients is worth that extra $10 000, and so is priced accordingly in the daily rate.

This would decimate yet another of out investments in Red gear in terms of what we can amortize in revenue back from it. Please do not ask for something that would make us regret giving our money to Red rather than remaining renters ourselves even further, the 4K BT Red Ones and sudden Epic price slash did enough damage. If they did that, they would be pushing even more potential buyers into never buying anything from them again.

Just please make bigger CF cards work with the CF module and I think Red is being awesome to the community - please do not put your customers out of profitable ownership simply to make life marginally easier for students - they can use Red Drives, which are plentiful on eBay.
I'm not following the logic here. What I was contemplating (but don't actually expect to see for a number of reasons) is way to augment an already very effective media format. Even if Red were to certify these CF cards, and even if they were to make an adapter, which the more I think about it probably doesn't make sense for them in terms of resources, my first choice of media would still be the RED SSDs for most projects. The CF cards would simply give me a backup plan in case I needed more media on a shoot. Now, I'm sure there are a lot of people who are in the position of needing a primary media solution due to reasons explained earlier in the thread. I'm not in that situation but I understand the predicament they are in.

As for the financials, I never like to cast judgment on anyone's business model. What works for someone else may not work for me but that doesn't make their business model wrong. The only general statement I'll make is that I have seen big changes in the rental business over the past several years. Certain segments of the market are flooded, crazy deals are made, and unfortunately ROI sometimes needs to happen faster than it used to due to how fast the industry moves these days. It's why I have moved a lot of my focus to content creation and less on gear. But that's not to say I don't appreciate what you're saying. Digital cinema gear, while perhaps more affordable than ever, still costs real money and no one wants to give things away for nothing when they have to invest real money to get it. So I get the dilemma. I just think in the case of media, if there is an option out there that would work fine with the Red One and Red is able to implement it without wasting valuable resources I think it could be a win-win.

I get what you're saying and I agree with it but we have to be practical and think long-term about this. RED ONE owners without SSD modules really have no options right now and lots of overseas and domestic productions are dumping RED ONE for Alexa. I've thought about this for a bit and I'm firmly on the "RED should do one last run of SSD modules" side now. If RED can and will open up the camera to these new Sandisk cards if they work, great. If not, then they should bite the bullet and get the rest of these RED ONEs on the SSD bandwagon - if possible/practical given the number of RED ONEs without the modules - with a new batch or two of SSD modules, which benefits everyone involved. The SSDs can be used on the other RED cameras making them a good investment if owners/houses upgrade, RED doesn't have to worry about bad juju with the media or deal with a CF supplier for RED CF cards, and things just get easier for everyone in the end. That's just my two cents.

Please RED, Don't let us down,We are all waiting for that Function.

Hi Brent thanks for this cool package but as you imagine it's not the right answer, actually the technology evolve, giving us the ability to use larger CF card is the point ! not buying many 16go CF.

Obsolescence obsolete. Yeah right.

Timeout, every Red One owner had opportunity to get the Side SSD Module for Red One, no? And also had opportunity to trade in Red One for an Epic as part of Stage 3 program? We can only lead horses to water, guys.

I think many of the recent wave of 2nd hand Red MX buyers are ones who may have missed out on the $4000 BT deal, and are buying from original Red MX owners, so they wouldn't necessarily have had the choice of an SSD module and were hoping to upgrade to SSD module when funds allowed. I was kind of surprised that the Red One SSD Module stopped production so soon actually. I'm sure there are still plenty of Red One M/MXs still with CF modules that might like the SSD option down the line.

With respect Brent sometimes finances have a priority such as I have been poring money into my Deep Atom 3D system. I still want to up grade my Red One eventually as it is still a great camera but now it is obsolete because Red won't sell the Side SSD module. It's not about leading horses to water...you guys made a BIG grandiose statement that Obsolescence is obsolete so one would naturally think that RED would carry on business and live by the moto that established your company. Times have been pretty brutal for the industry after the global financial crisis and there are plenty of guys that still use their Red Ones and one would think they should be able to upgrade the units at any time, for the life of the camera or those cameras become obsolete. I use both my Red One and the Epic X and intend to purchase 2 dragons once projects mature but I still would like to be able to use my Red One in the future as well.

one of those sandisk cards would fit perfect in my Christmas stocking..
