  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fantastic News For Red One (Mx) Users!! Is That Real ?!!

Waiting to test..

Yes thanks you, this test could be made quickly, i think it's not so hard for you and your R&D team. You just have to erase this limitation. For RED One user now obsolescence is not obsolet, it's real ! No more SSD, no more RED Drive, second hand market is not always a good solution...give us a chance to work with your wonderfull camera and use the latest technological improvement.

FANTASTIC! :)

It would be a good time to look at this as we still need a solution to the 48gb SSD issue too, so you guys could kill two birds with one stone so to speak (not keen on that metaphor but ...)

Many compact flash cards are now also rated for sustained writes at 20MB/s via the VPG-20 standard. It would be great if we could at least do 2K Redcode42 on these cards which apparently only needs 6MB/s! In theory they should be capable of 3K at Redcode42 and 4KHD at Redcode28.

I'd love to see 2K @ Redcode42 opened up to more cards.

Very impressed by the Sandisk Extreme Pro series with 'lifetime' warranty.

I have an Expreme Pro 100MB/s 128GB UDMA7 has been with me through years of torture tests on ML (and the caustic dessert air at BRC)

Here is the Sandisk reply :

We would like to inform you that the SanDisk 256GB CF Extreme 160MB/s card is indeed our fastest performing and highest capacity CF card that was specifically designed for use in high end cameras and performance intensive applications such as 4K video recording. The 256GB CF Extreme is 100% compliant to CF specifications and will work with any device that supports 256GB CF cards.

If the Red One camera has been built according to these specifications, it should work with any SanDisk card. If not, the camera’s manufacturer may consider a firmware upgrade, so the camera will be compatible with any Compact Flash card manufactured according to the CF specifications.

However as we have not tested this specific model camera we recommend that you check with the manufacturer directly in order to confirm the file system and maximum capacity that the camera can use as the information they provide refer only to their own brand of memory cards. Please bear in mind that we would recommend contacting them as we cannot be held liable for any erroneous information provided by third party companies.

Thank you for your kind cooperation and for allowing us to be of service to you! We remain at your service for any additional information.

What to do now? Just wait for Red tests i guess..

I hope there will be some positive results and a new firmware (if required) for the legendary RED ONE soon.

Every time I use the RED DRIVE lately I am afraid something will go wrong and I will not be able to use the camera anymore! The RED Store doesn't sell RED DRIVES or the SSD module anymore so they should give us some recording media options.

Don't let the RED ONE become obsolete because of recording media unavailability. This would be ridiculous! The camera ROCKS!

I have hoped for this for a while. This could quite literally be the best thing since getting the original camera.... would also love to swap out drives in my old red drive to ssds if they are going to do something along this lines... though that may be a bit more difficult with their being more hardware involved. But I would be thrilled with this. Still kicking around on my old R1 mysterium sensor, cause quite frankly i love it.

Yes I am waiting for my Red drives to fail as well......I guess the Red One is indeed 'obsolete' I was planning to upgrade to MX chip and get the SSD mount for it. I just shot a job on my Red One and it preformed faultlessly still a great camera.......

If these cards do pass the test, would you reconsider the CF to SSD adapter? If these cards do measure at around 60MB/s of sustained data rate, not only would it cover Red One 4K 16:9 RC42 okay, it seems in theory it would cover 5K 8:1 as well and perhaps with Dragon's more efficient compression the options would expand even more.

I'm a big fan of the Red Mags. I think they are solid and my first choice for media but having the option to have a couple of 256GB CF cards as additional media via an SSD adapter would be icing on the cake.

For Scarlet users, this seems like it would solve some of the complaints I have heard about the cost of media being too high for that market segment.

Essentially, if tests come out with positive results, seems like this could have an impact on all three models. I understand your position on media though, and it's one that I subscribe to as well. There should be no compromises or taking chances in this area. Dropped frames or corrupt media is unacceptable. So being stringent on the certification has been a good approach. But if these cards meet the specs and they are being backed with a lifetime warranty, perhaps it's something to consider moving forward.

This one simple answer is a great illustration of RED's responsiveness to innovation, new ideas, and their user base. It's what makes this company unique, still...to this day...even as their profile in the camera market continues to grow.

Quite frankly...I'm amazed.

I feel like no GOOD IDEA will go un-listened to.

Makes me want to stick around, for a long time.

Happy Halloween Jarred.

What's great is that the Red One has become a secret weapon of sorts. They can be had for reasonable money right now and for anyone who isn't looking to shoot all handheld, no lighting kinds of projects and shoots more traditional cinema style I don't think there's a better bargain for a 4K camera that can also shoot high frame rate. Also, the Red One body is an alternate approach to the newer design where you have multiple HD-SDI, HDMI, and audio all built into the camera body. The SSD module gave new life to the camera as it made it very easy to have the same media package amongst Epics and Scarlets on multicam shoots, not to mention the savings in weight and clunkiness of the Red Drives (which are still useful for things like interviews or other longs takes). The Red One is a beast that keeps on roaring. Control IR properly, be careful in mixed lighting, and set your white balance/tint correctly and you can achieve very good results. The Red One has a bit more grit than Epic and I don't mind it. You do have to work within it's dynamic range which is not as wide as Epic, and nowhere close to as wide as Dragon. Know thy camera, know thy limits and film to your heart's content.

This is a long way of saying, adding more functionality to the Red One can only be a good thing and will allow even more people to jump on the Red wagon.

Hello all, here is some news from Susan Park (Marketing director of Sandisk) :

Nabil
Thank you for contacting and thanks for your info. I too wish our SanDisk Extreme Pro CF cards will work woth RED cameras. RED had chosen to use proprietary protocol for their storage. SanDisk can provude technical assistance to make ReD camera compatible. Do you have contact into RED? I can reach out to them and see if we can get our new Extreme PRO CF cards to work in their camera.

Thank you and hope we can make progress with RED.
Susan.

We now have the Sandisk support (Thank you Susan Park), so the last thing we need to make this progress is the connexion between you Jarred, and Susan Park, let us know, and have a great day all..

Would be nice if there is such thing as CF to SSD adapter. Anyone have any info on this?

It would be a bridge adaptor. CF interface on one end to pork with the RED ONE CF module and then a REDMAG slot on the other end to take REDMAG SSDs. It's not an elegant solution by any means and I don't even know if it would work without some sacrifice in REDCODE data rates as the CF interface used in the RED ONE CF module is significantly out of date and likely couldn't do the full range like the SSD module can. At any rate, it would probably be easier and sensible for them to just make a few hundred runs of the already proven REDMAG SSD module for the RED ONE again as that is what many owners would benefit the most from.

This is good news. I have a failing drive and am off set about buying another used drive. If they approve these I will be buying a few high capacity CF cards and hand held will be far less of a problem with 3 less pounds on the RED ONE MX. RED TEAM GO!

What would be really cool would be an adapter that looks like a standard RED SSD but with a CF slot at the end. The internals of the adapter would be top flight components to maximize data throuput. It's probably way more work than RED would want to put in at this point considering that SSD is established and are a native solution for Epic and Scarlet which are current, relevant models.

But Red has surprised us many times in the past and if they felt that this solution would help a large segment of their user base, maybe they would consider it.

The problem is that, by any standard or account and irrelevant of their performance, RED SSDs are still extremely, unbelievably expensive.

Which is why it would be cool for Red to consider this option. :-)

Hello everybody, i hope you're fine!

In my opinion, we should not scare Red by asking them too much things, Cf to SSD or SSd to Cf adaptors imply a huge and tremendous work, and to be honest, i don't really see the point of something like that..

Our request of making these Cf cards work with the Red one Camera has nothing to do with a fancy request, it is about "resolving a serious problem" which is that Red does offer no serious media solution for the Red one Cf, and the simplest and most efficient way to resolve this problem is to make these new Sandisk Cf cards work with the Red one.
A simple firmware update will be more than enough, no need to make a whole new complicated accessory, please people, let's don't scare them with too much requests.
There is a serious problem to resolve and in my opinion, we have to concentrate on that first..

Ps: Red, like i said above, Sandisk is open to work with you and make our expectations happen, Sandisk is ready to solve the problem with you..

I agree that if it's as simple as a firmware upgrade (which only Red knows if that's true) then getting existing hardware working with these cards makes the most sense. My thought about the SSD adapter is that it would then be relavant to their current product line. Red One is EOL'd so in a sense they are not obligated to do anything moving forward. Seems like an opportunity to make everyone happy, but there are probably other priorities they need to deal with first.
