  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fantastic News For Red One (Mx) Users!! Is That Real ?!!

The problem is that, by any standard or account and irrelevant of their performance, RED SSDs are still extremely, unbelievably expensive.

True, but the SSDs are competitively priced with the only high-end CF media available at the moment in identical capacities and they are not counterfeited, which makes them a better value if you can use them.

Yeah. Agree +1

Hello everybody, i hope you're fine!

In my opinion, we should not scare Red by asking them too much things, Cf to SSD or SSd to Cf adaptors imply a huge and tremendous work, and to be honest, i don't really see the point of something like that..

Our request of making these Cf cards work with the Red one Camera has nothing to do with a fancy request, it is about "resolving a serious problem" which is that Red does offer no serious media solution for the Red one Cf, and the simplest and most efficient way to resolve this problem is to make these new Sandisk Cf cards work with the Red one.
A simple firmware update will be more than enough, no need to make a whole new complicated accessory, please people, let's don't scare them with too much requests.
There is a serious problem to resolve and in my opinion, we have to concentrate on that first..

Ps: Red, like i said above, Sandisk is open to work with you and make our expectations happen, Sandisk is ready to solve the problem with you..

I second this, 1000x second this.

Now they have 4K-capable SD cards with something like 240Mbps sustained write speeds.

I was referring to the newest revision of SD cards made for high-bitrate video recording and they aren't even available yet so far as I know. I suppose it would be possible to put one in a SD2CF adapter for use with RED and Canon 4K cameras, but it would have to be one of the HQ adapters that doesn't slow down the card access.

Guys seriously do you expect RED to just test one CF card and then give you a all good everything passed? Give it some time. I am sure they have to make multiple read/write tests on multiple cards to make sure they all pass without fail before you all rush out to use them on shoots and god forbid they fail then the same people come here and complain that the RED one doesn't work properly.

The cards aren't really available yet as they aren't being manufactured in large numbers due to low demand and the need to move existing product, so it will likely be several more weeks or next year at the earliest before we hear anything conclusive. These will likely be the last generation of CF cards made by Sandisk as the interface has been replaced by XQD in future products and will be phased out in DSLRs over the next few years as SD has replaced CF in consumer DSLRs and XQD will suit the high-end DSLRs and video cameras that require it's speeds and capacities.

B&H currently have them in stock.

128GB exist too.

While this would be a very good thing to have these CF cards as on option
it is equally important that at least another batch of the SSD module is made.

If these cards do pass the test, would you reconsider the CF to SSD adapter? If these cards do measure at around 60MB/s of sustained data rate, not only would it cover Red One 4K 16:9 RC42 okay, it seems in theory it would cover 5K 8:1 as well and perhaps with Dragon's more efficient compression the options would expand even more.

I'm a big fan of the Red Mags. I think they are solid and my first choice for media but having the option to have a couple of 256GB CF cards as additional media via an SSD adapter would be icing on the cake.

For Scarlet users, this seems like it would solve some of the complaints I have heard about the cost of media being too high for that market segment.

Essentially, if tests come out with positive results, seems like this could have an impact on all three models. I understand your position on media though, and it's one that I subscribe to as well. There should be no compromises or taking chances in this area. Dropped frames or corrupt media is unacceptable. So being stringent on the certification has been a good approach. But if these cards meet the specs and they are being backed with a lifetime warranty, perhaps it's something to consider moving forward.

We offer the $10 000 of SSD mags we bought as part of a rental package (we charge for rentals even if it is us shooting the gig), which in the minds of clients is worth that extra $10 000, and so is priced accordingly in the daily rate.

This would decimate yet another of out investments in Red gear in terms of what we can amortize in revenue back from it. Please do not ask for something that would make us regret giving our money to Red rather than remaining renters ourselves even further, the 4K BT Red Ones and sudden Epic price slash did enough damage. If they did that, they would be pushing even more potential buyers into never buying anything from them again.

Just please make bigger CF cards work with the CF module and I think Red is being awesome to the community - please do not put your customers out of profitable ownership simply to make life marginally easier for students - they can use Red Drives, which are plentiful on eBay.

Most of the people using RED ONEs aren't students these days. Tons of low-budget stuff made in Canada/UK/Europe/Asia was shot on RED ONE/MX and those production companies are quickly moving to Alexa without the means to gain further use out of RED ONEs that are still perfectly usable if you've got media.

@ Robert,

Lol!, you are a funny guy dear friend, i like you!

More seriously, we don't care about who has invested what in which tools and how much money, the market evolves, and what you paid yesterday will lost in money value tomorrow, that's the basics of business.
But we are not talking about money here, but about a real problem that i'm tired to explain: "The Red one Mx is a professional cinema camera destined to shoot "Movies", since recently, Red does offer no "Serious media solution" for Red one Mx Cf owners as they don't sell SSd modules anymore, and the only solution we have is to buy their 16gb Cf cards. The problem is that a 16Gb Cf card allows to record no more than 8mn, let's be serious, i didn't bought a Cinema camera to shoot Vines videos.
Your blabla solution which is to buy Red drives on Ebay is like i said, "a Blabla solution", it's not serious at all and i let you imagine why.

Don't take my message personally, It's not against you at all, really, it's just that we are talking about a serious problem that has to been solved quickly and you come here with your "how dangerous your Cf media solution can be for the rental market".
You are a businessman right? Do what all businessman do, "live with your time and evolve with it", when you'll have to, sell your old technologies and reinvest in a newer one, basics of business my friend.

Ps: let me rassure you: These new Cf cards will not kill the Ssd market, they will just allow new Red one Mx owners like me to have what every professional camera should and must offer: "a professional media solution".

Cheers, and have a great day..
