  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fantastic News For Red One (Mx) Users!! Is That Real ?!!

I'm doing a prep in a couple days with a RED ONE MX. I have a couple of these new 32 GB Sandisks that I picked up just to see if they'll work in the camera. I'll post results next week.

anybody heard from this guy since?

I am also keeping fingers crossed for the firmware release...

Ah it is not in the German store yet.
The cf cards would be nice when you are shooting on a lower budget.

Cf cards have been a lot discussed recently, so i'm reopening this thread :

To all Red one (Mx) users, let's make our voice heard!!

I was in a shooting yesterday, and for an aesthetic reason, i decided to switch from 4,5k Ws to 4k 16:9, BUT, @24fps & compression 42, it is NOT POSSIBLE!
4k 16:9 has more resolution than 4,5k WS, so You have to switch to compression 36 to shoot at this format, which is pretty ridiculous let's be honest..

Come on Red! We just need a firmware update!!

People, let's do that, who is ready to PAY for that? Let's all give some bucks for this firmware update, and let's pray..

The SSDs that are compatible with the R1 do not have the option of RC42 at 4K 16:9, so it's not just a CF card or Red Drive limitation. I don't know if this is simply a firmware issue or if there is more to it. It would seem to me that if the Red SSDs are fast enough then RED would have enabled that setting in firmware. They didn't so perhaps the issue is somewhere else in the chain.

At this point I would be very surprised to see any more firmware updates for the Red One as it is EOL. That's not to say I wouldn't welcome one if they came up with some new features or improvements but I can't imagine many resources, if any, are going into the R1 at this point.

Maybe Graeme might be able to shed some light on the RC42 4K 16:9 issue.

My vote for a new Red One firmware update.
Any feature enhancements would be welcome.

R1 is still not compatible with the newer 240GB SSDs.
Enhancements with storing settings
that would allow switching to specific frame rates
Red code, and resolutions would be nice.

It's hardware so not my sphere of expertise.

Thanks for your answer Graeme but, we just need a firmware update, why are you talking about "Hardware" ?

RC42 @16:9 4k, is a hardware constraint, if I understand Graeme right, and that corresponds with how I thought it was.

The "off the shelf CF cards thing" is not harware.

Thanks Graeme for chiming in!

You are talking cameras and cards which is hardware. In other words you're asking the wrong guy.

Ultimately, this is a Jarred question. First, he would need to allocate resources to this task, which may or may not be possible based on everything else they have going on. R1 is a solid camera, still being used nearly 8 years after its release. But spending resources on it may not be in their best interest and I would think Jarred has a good handle on all that.

Think about it, they have their current crop of cameras to support as well as everything in development. Pulling engineers off of those tasks would probably be detrimental to them.

Now, if it's easy to do, as in it would take an engineer a half day to make it work, then perhaps we can twist Jarred's arm to get something like that done. But remember, RED has always been protective about media. If they open up that can of worms, perhaps it brings on some headaches they don't want.

I will say, a new R1 update would certainly be intriguing. If they did it, it would be kind of unprecedented I would think. I guess the list would look something like this.

- Open to all qualified CF cards
- Support for newer SSDs such as 240GB
- New, optimized Red One 2015 color science based on 8 years of the camera capturing hundreds of thousands of hours of footage.
- Gio Scope like exposure tool

The idea of paying for firmware updates hasn't really been Red's thing. So I don't think you'll see that enter into the equation.

But it would be kind of cool if there was a 2015 Red One resurgance. It still holds its own in the 4K market. They could sell battle tested ones with 2015 update and make it compete against the Ursa. But reality tells me best to enjoy it for what it is and move on when it no longer has any practical value. Then again, Jarred has surprised us before, so never say never I guess.

It s really annoying to keep getting emails re a ridiculous amount of update for dsmc systems and not a peep regarding a remarkably simple release for the red one mx, the original future proof camera body. Still no news??

I would love a new firmware with a new anamorphic option and the possibility of seeing the new color science and luts.

I also doubt that that will happen.

Have a good day.

New firmware sounds great, but it is all a moot point if there is no media to record on. I remember a while back some red one owners talking about hacking a red drive and replacing them with SSDs. Any one knows anything on that front?
