  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

F5/55

All I can really say is, Jim and Jarred did it. They finally forced all of the bigs to start putting their best foot forward. Mission accomplished. Well done.

The Sony is a damn nice looking rig.

The F5 will clean up here in broadcast tv. I will get one, I suspect many people will buy it. As long as the price is right it will dominate the market. It just ticks so many boxes, and with Sony service centres and support with loaner cameras globally. It will be embraced.

But, I still want to shoot TVC's on my Red. For me, it is a perfect small TVC camera. I can rig it, over crank, reframe, trust the RAW.

Interesting times.

Let's be honest here. This will be a VERY good camera. But consider this:

1. The F55 can't record raw internally. You have to buy an add on recorder for 10K (and you won't be able to use a 3rd party recorder it seems...)
2. According to Phillip bloom this camera is 50K for the body alone... unless he is pulling the wool over our eyes, this camera is priced in the Alexa range, not he Epic range.
3. It does an amazing 14 stops of latitude (yes it is amazing... however dragon is 16+)

The best thing about this camera is the global shutter, and the high frame rates with no cropping. This will certainly be a successful camera. But it is all new product hype for now until we see solid prices, footage, specs and comparisons.

Food for thought.

I can do high frame rates with no cropping now on my Epic. The Epic, all told, beats this camera in most ways. We have almost never run out of dynamic range, few times have we needed to think about HDR - very few (although those times I have been thankful for it,. and it worked great with minimal post fuss) If you are shooting with a 50K camera, likely you have lights and fast lenses - rather than shooting with no lights at all with f5.6 plastic zooms - so do you really need ISO 12 500 - in my experience, no - I just wish Red sold an ND filter wheel that was IR tuned as an accessory.

As for CMOS skew - really has not been an issue for us, ever - and you can get a Tessive filter for less than the price difference between Epic and this cam.

Epic is also perfect weight for long Steadicam use, technojib, etc.

Not much of a threat to Epic. Does other things differently.

If anything i think it will help Epic sales - you do a comparison of the latest and greatest Sony to Epic and you say "Well, Epic is a pretty good deal now isn't it."

I'm glad Sony sees no need to race to the bottom pricing - I hope Red will concur (they have an Ultra cheap Scarlet, which more than serves the needs of a beginner filmmaker, as does Sony have an FS 100 et. all).

A high end staying a high end is a good thing. For those who say that is Elitist I ask - Do you want to spend the rest of your life making $200 a day and being your own P.A., or do you want there to be another world out there, that you can work hard and get to?

Do you want the market for cameras to eb so bad that only Chinese semi-slave labour can survive?

Absolutely, the Meizler Module makes Epic a serious production tool. Without it, Epic is seriously wanting for many people.
The 2 should really be packaged together. Hell, the Pro IO (semi pro?) should have been ready at launch IMHO.

Sony products make great pictures in the right hands. I hate their business model, lies and misdirection. But I work with their kit all the time.
It delivers. I don't own any of their kit, I might never. But I might own this kit because, frankly, I like it and the post departments I'm forced to use
will want a camera that says Cinealta...

Here "Cinealata" is more thought of as a high-end ENG/doc/live event cam brand, for whatever reason.

A producer said to me a few months ago: "If you call yourself a shooter, you're into Panasonic or Sony, if you call yourself a DOP you're into Arri or Red."

Other environments may be different.

Sony - Records XDcam (and more) internally - Records raw externally
RED - Records raw internally - Records NDxHD/QT externally

Two ways of looking at the industry.

Idk man it seems like alot of the good things about this camera lead to - planned upgrade, or an additional module. It will work out of the box but not like a lot of people are thinking. If you add the other modules sure out of the box but then how is that any different than buying an epic with the right accessories.

The F5 is more of a competitor of the RED One, Scarlet, C500 and C300. Spec wise it offers some serious advantages like better iso sensitivity at 2000, better DR at 14 stops and no window cropping at 2k.

Again, when was the last time the Epic had too little dynamic range so you couldn't shoot what you wanted? In my case, never.

I'm at the livechat Sony are having on their Facebook page now about hte F5 and F55... and this post popped out and made me lol quite a bit xD
You can choose your display name on the chat so someone decided to be funny :P

Come on man, you say there's no proxy recording or non-crop 2k on the Epic, but you say there's raw on the F55? Double standard much? And if you're going to call Epic's 5k a true 4k, then you've gotta call the F55's 4k a true 3.2k. Plus you fail to mention the max framerates possible in full res raw (60p 4k vs 120p 5k).

The new Sony's look great btw, not saying anything bad about them. I personally think global shutter's a great thing.
