  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

F5/55

2013 is the end of 1080p as we know it. With recent camera, display, and standards announcements, we are now witnessing the inevitable change that RED ushered in.

Alexa was a nice camera, but I'd say, judging by the specs (test are still needed), that this Sony camera is the first to really start to challenge EPIC. But RED has so many tricks up it's sleeve that I believe Sony and others are still playing catch up. With the price reductions, they are going to be able to turn quicker and I anticipate that the Dragon upgrade will also include a major upgrade in horsepower for EPIC (and possibly Scarlet).

If RED reduces prices, and makes a Meizler equipped Dragon camera less expensive than the other offerings, we will see RED continue to accelerate ahead.

But I sure do feel sorry for those rental houses and customers who bought F65s and continue to be taken advantage of by companies that obsolete their products within their first 6-12 months.

The F65 is the only 8k game in town (and now at up to 120fps!). God help the poor harddrives that have to deal with that much data. But the F65 is really doing its own thing at the high-end of the scale.

For mere mortal productions, none of these announcements do anything to change the beautiful 1080p images that are being delivered to TVs and Cinemas around the world from cameras like Epic and Alexa. Greater than HD resolution is great to have, but it isn't essential, and won't be for a long, long time.

Even with the "HUGE" (since that's what people are calling it) announcement today from Sony, it just makes me even happier I chose RED. Don't get me wrong, Sony makes great products and their newest "F" cameras seem amazing. I'm sure DP's will make really nice images with either of these camera, however, the Epic is Epic, and creates magnificent images, and that's without Dragon. 6k for $6k is coming, and even with the added expenses RED has encountered in the sensor's development and implementation into the Epic system, they are standing by their word and pricing.

I paid over $55k for the Epic M package, which is a lot of money to invest, but given RED's history, dedication to always put the customer first, and their always upgradable/modular systems, it was a no brainer. Jim, Jarred, Ted and everyone else at RED are leading our industry into the future, and all other manufacturers are just trying to play catch up. It's nice to know you're at the front of the train rather than the back.

I agree, I've got 2 great cameras, who cares what else come out, I'm going to go out and make a f**%en movie!

Great specs. Nice Brochure. Couple issues.

1. No footage available. F65 footage has some known issues.
2. Quite a ways off from shipping.
3. No Pricing
4. 4K footage STORAGE requirements are a hidden expense. (REDCODE RULES)
5. Looks like a nice "right now" camera. Im not sold on "future proofing" capabilities given cost of storage.

Meizler + Epic Bundle = great fucking idea Mark.

Anyway, to take a page from Mike Most the last 3 years regarding Epic... "its hard to get excited about something that isnt shipping yet." :P

Nice post Chris!

Just to put it into perspective:

ALEXA Studio 4:3 RAW recording mode is 2880 x 2160 with physical dimensions of 23.76mm x 17.82mm.

EPIC 4:3 maximum is 3600 x 2700 pixels with physical dimensions of 19.44mm x 14.58mm.

The EPIC offers a 25% increase in pixel count while respectively having an 18% reduction in sensor size or area.

One can draw their own conclusions, but I've seen EPIC anamorphic footage as well and it's awesome. The reduction or cropping of the sensor area to me is a negligible price to pay for the increased resolution and I couldn't see where it had any adverse effects on getting the desired anamorphic bokeh properties or streaking flares. Just as resolution isn't everything, neither is sensor size. And we presumably have larger sensors coming anyway. Dragon offers a small bump in size with even more resolution. RED has announced in the past larger sensor cameras. I'm still lusting over the possibility of that EPIC-645 and EPIC-617.... Hopefully, some day...

Well, just my personal opinion, but I've never seen anamorphic lenses look as good or as proper as they do on a full-aperture (4:3) sensor. I know most users (and buyers) don't really care but... tell me this doesn't look damn fine !

That one's for you, Tanner.

You can copy everything except passion.

This is an all out war, where brands are coming up with yet another hat trick, consolidating what is now an unquestionable 4K landscape. Red were the pioneers and now these guys are undoubtably catching up fast. I'm sure this has played a role in tomorrow's Red announcement, providing new (lower) pricing for the Epic.

And what's more, Canon and Sony are producing equally impressive primes and zooms. These are incredibly exciting times for our community and beyond.

Damn right it's a war...and RED just got done with a bunker buster! Can't wait for a volley from RED!!

This is a quote from their brochure:

"Does a 4K camera make sense in an HD world? Perfect sense. With 8.9 megapixels (effective), Sony’s 4K
image sensor enables a single camera to provide gorgeous, super-sampled HD and 2K while preparing
you for the 4K future. "

Funny isn't it? Far too often we've read blogs, reviews and articles stating that 4K doen't make sense or is an overkill on an HD world. Now finally Sony says it "makes perfect sense". You have to laugh at this.

But also, why wait for tomorrow? 4K/5K is right here. You can go and shoot now.

Let's be honest here. This will be a VERY good camera. But consider this:

1. The F55 can't record raw internally. You have to buy an add on recorder for 10K (and you won't be able to use a 3rd party recorder it seems...)
2. According to Phillip bloom this camera is 50K for the body alone... unless he is pulling the wool over our eyes, this camera is priced in the Alexa range, not he Epic range.
3. It does an amazing 14 stops of latitude (yes it is amazing... however dragon is 16+)

The best thing about this camera is the global shutter, and the high frame rates with no cropping. This will certainly be a successful camera. But it is all new product hype for now until we see solid prices, footage, specs and comparisons.

Food for thought.

the best thing it will be silent camera and not a hair drier , after 40 days on a show with epic 99% steady-cam i don't think i have any doubt why people prefer alexa for stuff that people do need to talk in front of the camera :-), maybe before the dragon the red people need to think what could be done to make it silent

First of all, the new Sony F55 is not out yet. Let's cross the bridge when we come to it.

Thirdly, it's not difficult to have an idea how Red can manage to stay in the game:

1. Lowering prices (already announced)
2. Add a ProRes/DnxHD Module Lite for 5k, besides the very interesting Meizler module which price-point of 13k is an investment many rethink at least twice.
3. Offer a sensor upgrade in the realm of 4-6k that delivers a tad more resolution because resolution is Red's USP and, off course, 16 stops of latitude.

agreed, three things that make me shoot much more on the c300 than the epic right now:

- Fan noise, for sensitive documentary, the epic is useless, the tremendous vacuumcleaner sound gains way to much attention. Next to the dragon update, the biggest thing to work on, when the epics go back, is killing the fan noise. Or at least 75% less...
- Built in ND, so convienent when shooting run and gun.
- Lower data rate, editready 1080 codec. This is the main reason for a lot of production company's not wanting to work with red. Data transfer times are long, files size huge, the convert to 1080P anyway, computer can't playback without redrocket, etc
- Better battery life is always welcome

The new sony ticks all these boxes above, and those are really important. I know the philosophy of red, and i know there are working on the last point. And understand that build in ND, is quite a different design. But please kill the fan noise and bring out the prores mini module asap.

I think the thing is, all the camera's are getting so good in image quality nowadays, that the choice for a system is more and more based on non-image related facts. Like, battery life, media price, size, weight, fan noise, codec, built in ND, easy menu access, stability, audio recording options. All the stuff that is not directly related to the image, is getting more and more important and sony nailed it with this camera. They used the best of of epic, alexa and their own stuff. This is the first camera, apart from the alexa, that actually has a normal viewfinder from the start without all kind of difficult mounting solutions, in a logical position, that alone is already a big plus.
