  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

F5/55

did he say the new batteries only last an hour on the camera? but they are much improved... is that over redbricks and other v mounts or just sony brand batteries. If this is true and you can use these on red it would be interesting more power and faster charge times.

Also if it is the case then it just goes to show how much power these next gen camera's draw, and I'm rather pleased that red managed to provide the redvolts at all.

Very interesting times, some very ingenious features on this camera very crowd pleasing, but still some choices that I'm not sure of and things that remain to be seen.

p.s. oh and on the fan noise these are still prototypes so who knows it could be vastly improved.

Fun Times!

From what I can read the F5 and the RAW module only give you 2K raw.

While that's funny, the real irony is that the Asylum shoots with R1mx a lot of the time (and I bet Age of the Hobbits is no exception...)

Totally. I was mainly pointing out the level of the near "rubber stamp" copying of RED's system by Sony. :)

Further proof that it's not the tool, it's how you use it. Sony, like The Asylum, are pure bottom feeders here. Sony should have brought their own "revolution". I guess they left that one to RED. Again.

I see people seem to like that ND switch and the shutter on new Sony. I'd like some kind of Tessive time filter to be placed on top of the Dragon sensor (in EPIC-DR), integrated into the system to control the functions. That one could effectively eliminate rolling shutter effects and also work as variable ND-filter (I assume you can set the ND filtration electronically, say 1.5 or 2). On the current MX sensor with the Tessive filter (placed in a matte box) you would lose two or stop and a half, if I remember correctly. Maybe Red guys can improve this thing, after all global shutter in Sony F55 isn't mechanic (as in F65), so it's got to be some sort of a layer that goes transparent and completely black to emulate the "filmic shutter" behavior. Or, possibly, I'm clueless here and Dragon's read-out times are so good already, the beast is perfect on it's own without any filtration and Red magicians would just quietly laugh at this crap I wrote, he he. In that case the only thing "missing" would be built-in ND filters.

Touche... That said, I can't help but point out that often it's not the people that bring the revolution that perfect it. Take Apple; they didn't invent the PC market... In fact, they didn't even do all that well in it until the ipod... Speaking of ipod, they didn't invent the mp3 player either, they just perfected it.

Moreover, I don't think people have any allegiance to any brand (even REDs) regardless of "who came first"; it doesn't make financial sense... If Sony offered an exact rubber stamp duplicate of the Epic, but for $5000, even the hardest of hardcore RED "loyalists/fanboys" here would no doubt jump ship... Back to apple; look how quickly people jumped back to Premiere/PC after FCPX.

My point is that, rubber stamp or not, when push comes to shove I don't think people give a crap who's copying who.

I agree. When the product is superior in some identifiable way. I can't say that for The Asylum, but everything else is spot on. :)

It doesn't help that Sony has the money and marketing to shove this down peoples throats.

As a RED owner, that's exactly what bothers me. Global shutter is good, 4k is good, built-in NDs are good, full-sensor high frame rates are good, but none of that is so far beyond Scarlet (or Epic) to actually warrant switching... However, if they blow the doors off the price (e.g. F5 for FS700 prices and RAW recorder for $2k, something that Sony *could* do... they won't, but they could) it'd make me very nervous. It basically means they won't let a "mom & pop shop" like RED push them around, and that they're willing to go the distance.

As far as I'm concerned, the cat is out of the bag. It won't be long before all the big players start playing the game and shit really hits the fan (I'm expecting 8k cameras and 4k for $4k announcements at NAB2013).

Well said.

Considering how they bungled the f65 launch, I am curious to see if they have corrected their mistakes.

I think it looks like an awesome camera. That said, if I had 50k to spend, and no epic, I'd still buy the epic. Yes the f55 has certain awesome features, ND, global shutter, but the raw module is detachable. That says to me, contact points of failure. Also it only clips in? There should be bolts holding that expensive looking bad boy on. I like that the epic is completely self contained. Less to go wrong.

The ergonomics look awesome. I like how it just looks like it wants to sit on the shoulder. I hate that all the controls are on the smart side of camera. Best part of Alexa is the dumb side control. Best part of epic is the side handle, essentially dumb side control (or the remote).

I think it will find a market, but a market that's looking to move up. I know of some people looking to ditch the epic for the f55. I see it as an awesome new tool to use for its strengths.

There is a Bolt on top to secure V-lock

Unless the F55+RAW module are less than Epic (certainly Epic with $6k Dragon upgrade) by a few grand ($5k?), I don't see why anyone would switch. It's a matter of priorities... I prefer having RAW out of the box, instead of baked in XAVC/compression (even at 4k) out of the box. Most of us here do.

I guess my concern is that, if Sony can go from 1080p baked-in shits to 4k RAW in less than 6 months for essentially the same price, than they could trump RED in two camera generations (which is only a year in Sony/Canon/Panny timeframes). Do I think it will happen? I doubt it... Could they do it if they wanted? Definitely. It all depends on how seriously they take RED as a threat. And, after owning one of these cameras -- the weakest one (a Scarlet) -- I can't see Sony/Canon/Panny *not* seeing them as a threat...

The only reason this has any barring is because the F5 and F55 are basically a shot off the bow, and to invest in any camera system now (especially a proprietary one) is arguably the worst time to do so.

I highly doubt these new cameras will need much 'shoving down people's throats' to get people to use them.

I'll be surprised if we don't also see a remote Assistant's Control Panel (like they have for the F35 and F65), which gives AC's that control without being tied to the camera body itself.

Depending on the price (of course) as far as 'switching' goes, you'd have to be daft (or desperately in need of global shutter for some reason) to take a hit selling an Epic to switch over to the F55, as it's not a huge step forward (though it definitely IS a step forward - as well it should be given the age difference between the two). For anyone not playing in Epic/Alexa territory yet though, and looking to upgrade, I'd say the F55 is now the camera to beat (or at least it will be come February).

Exciting times.
