  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything you wanted to know about the EPIC Canon Mount

Did a quick test: yes, it works!

When can I buy the Al Canon Mount?

When can I buy the Al Canon Mount?

Ditto on this question. I'm waiting on the Red Nikon mount as my main mount but would like to have a Canon as well but don't want to pay the $1500 premium for titanium which I feel is unnecessary with SLR lenses anyway. Would happily order the $500 Canon mount today if we could. Seems like manufacturing is kicking ass and should be caught up or will be soon on AL mounts for the Scarlets and could make some for some of us lowly Epic owners :-)

For underwater I would think twice with alluminium.
AL Expansion coefficient 22.2
TI Expansion coefficient 8.6

You take camera from hot deck to cold water, I don't know what will happen with the back focus?

Hope we can order Al canon mount today. My debit card is ready and willing!

Does it matter all that much? Most stills lenses go past infinity focus on the assumption that lens mounts are crappy. I thought back-focus was mostly just important if you were operating off of taping out a distance (something nearly impossible underwater).

I'm afraid Samyang took onto something to hard to do for the price. The longer ones are pretty good, actually.

I second getting the Tokina 11-16 for that range.

I've seen photos taken with Samyang lenses with some pretty disturbing looking distortion. Check out this review...

Mate,

On that lens and the 8mm I agree with you. In fact I will go even further and say don't even look at the 14mm... Wipe it from your mind with a mind eraser machine:)

However the 24mm, 35mm and 85mm are simply stellar performers.

I will shoot side by side with my L series and I will challenge anybody here to spot the difference ;)

And if anybody can qualitatively spot it, I will blend all my Samyang lenses ;)
It simply ddoesn't fly to use the review of one crap lens to disregard the whole line. One could use this same argument for the canon line. There are a few pretty iffy canon lenses too if you look around...

FYI I use a Tokina -16 as my wide as well - it is the best wide performer out there IMHO...

Ivan - I just might get the 24, 35, and 85 on your recommendation. Will I be sorry? lol

Hey Terry,

I say go for it, but even so...don't take my word for it. Go to photozone.de and check out their MTF of the Samyangs and compare to L series and other 3rd party.

Clearly the Samyang 35 is the best performer out of the 3 samyangs and it even surpasses canon's L-series 35.

The 85 is very sharp (not as shap as canon 1.2 though) plus minimal focal distance could be a little closer but it more than makes up for it in Bokeh quality and the action of the focus ring. buttery.

The 24 is new and doesn't have enough reviews yet, but so far I am finding it really nice.

If you want I can post a few side by sides with canons at the same settings so you can judge for yourself.

Lastly, whilst they make great glass their quality control is inconsistent... I have heard reports of people ordering online and getting dodgy lenses. If you can I hight suggest popping into a store like B and H and test out the lenses for yourself to make sure you get one that is on the money.
HTH

ivan :)
