  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything you wanted to know about the EPIC Canon Mount

PLEASE HELP ME JARRED! I don't see any teleconverters on the list and I really love using mine with the 70-200. Could you please help us out and hook us up with some power to the teleconverter. Mine is a Vivitar and it works just like any other so I'd hate to have to buy a Canon one just to get power to the IS on my lens. At 400mm it's a helluva big deal not having the great IS from the MarkII available. It always worked fine on the Birger mount (I know, that's probably a bad word). Please, please, please.

My Canon 2x TC III works fine on the mount.

This is gonna sound ridiculous but....has anyone tried the good ol' Canon 50mm f/1.8 II (aka the nifty fifty!)? I know its a $100 piece of plastic that breaths harder than any single lens but Im just curious...going to rent Scarlet-X and I know my Canon 35mm f/2 will work and hopefully my 85mm f/1.8...if not I can just throw a nice Zeiss CP.2 in :D

Hey Nathaniel, I blew my entire budget on a Scarlet and, not having enough money for a decent lens, bought a nifty fifty for $60 just so I could play with my camera.

It looks absolutely ridiculous on the Scarlet, but it works. I definitely wouldn't rent it out, more than anything because of the awful focus ring, but for my purpose of getting to know the camera it's doing fine. The image isn't even that bad! If you like, PM me and I can send you a couple shots.

Zeiss ZE suppoerted?

Zeiss ZE suppoerted?

Can someone set me straight? The list below is a bit confusing. Are the Zeiss ZE lenses supported by the Red Canon mount? Only the 50mm f1.4 ZE is specifically mentioned and I am confused by the other lenses mentioned as they do not have the ZE name. Is this to be assumed? Also no sign of the Zeiss 35mm ZE f1.4 at all.

Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5
Zeiss Distagon T* 21mm f/2.8
Zeiss Distagon T* 25mm f/2
Zeiss Distagon T* 28mm f/2
Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm f/2
Zeiss Planar 50mm f/1.4 ZE
Zeiss Makro-Planar 50mm f/2
Zeiss Planar T* 85mm f/1.4
Zeiss Makro-Planar 100mm f/2
Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5
Zeiss Distagon T* 21mm f/2.8
Zeiss Distagon T* 25mm f/2
Zeiss Distagon T* 28mm f/2
Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm f/2
Zeiss Planar 50mm f/1.4 ZE
Zeiss Makro-Planar 50mm f/2
Zeiss Planar T* 85mm f/1.4
Zeiss Makro-Planar 100mm f/2

I don't understand. Aren't these all manual focus? I have never used one of the Zeiss EOS mount lenses but I have a Canon mount for the Epic. If it fits on an EOS mount it will fit on the Epic EOS mount. Am I missing something?

I can say that I use the following and aperture control works.

Zeiss Distagon T* 21mm f/2.8
Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm f/1.4
Zeiss Planar 50mm f/1.4 ZE
Zeiss Makro-Planar 100mm f/2

Wait till you test the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II and then you'll reinforced your statement... ;)
I can see that the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L is on the list but will the new mark II version also work?

Anyone know if the Sigma 300-800 has been added yet?

Thanks,
Skip

please, would you add the following list to the lens database:
SIGMA 300-800mm F5.6 EX DG APO HSM
thanks, norbert

I have received a ton of questions through email over the last couple weeks on the Canon mount. Thought a thread was fitting.

First of all.. Let me introduce he first production Titanium Canon EOS mount that just came off the line today, along with the new lens caps:

1314414437.jpg

-These will start to ship to customers on September 9th.

-Deposits will open on RED.COM in the store in the next couple days. Price for the smart Titanium Canon mount is $2000.

- The Titanium mounts are all machined out of solid Titanium.

-Current EPIC builds all support Iris control over the mount. An early AF build will be released around the time when the mounts ship. This will include basic touchscreen autofocus.

-After release You don't need separate builds for different mounts.. AF support for Canon and Nikon etc. will all be integrated into the " normal " EPIC builds, so you can switch from PL to Canon mount to Nikon mount all with the same camera build.

- Speaking of switching, it is a field safe procedure ( in a clean area ) and literally involves unscrewing 4 bolts and swapping mounts.. Then check back focus ( if needed )

- The Canon lens mount is "SMART" which means it controls camera Iris, Image Stabilization, and Autofocus electronically, via the various control options with EPIC ( touch screen, side handle, REDMOTE )

- A lot of people have emailed about the nature of Canon lenses sometimes being loose in their mounts on their DSLRs. We have added a locking ( as you can see in the photo above ) so you bayonet the lens into the mount as normal, and then rotate the locking to double secure the lens. No more rotation, no more wobble :)

-All lens data available from the lens will be stored in the R3D metadata. There is on screen displays for iris stop, focal length ( including zooms ) and the current focus distance in inches or mm.

-Here is a list of Canon lenses that have been programed into the mount/ Epic Brain. These still need to be characterized for fine-tuned autofocus as they all have different motor speeds etc., but they are and will be functional out of the gate when the Canon mount ships.

Image Stabilization is functional on the entire stabilized lens lineup.

+ a few 3rd party lenses. More lenses being added weekly.

If your lens is not on the list, it's ok, you still will get rudimentary support, such as IRIS control and Stabilization if the lens has it.

I will add things to this list as questions come up.. so ask away.

Not seeing the EF 400mm 2.8 II on the list. Got a commercial shoot in Africa in a week. Am I shooting Epic or Canon 1Dc?

This is the list in the beginning. The latest list is in the manual.

Hi there. . .

I don't want to slog through 100 pages of posts on the Epic's Canon mount, but how are you all controlling focus using this mount?

We have a Birger/Impero set-up on our RED One, and I keep hoping that something will come along allowing wireless focus for the Epic, as well.

Is it here already?

Thanks.

Stephen

Birger/Impero = state of the art, only on Red one.

Something like that doesn't exist anywhere else.

I don't think it will be on the epic.

Without trawling this rather impressive thread - can somebody PM me and let me know if, other than material used in manufacture, is there any material (operational) difference between the Ti and AL versions of this mount? I'm assuming the AL is operationally identical to the Ti, I don't use Canon glass very often so wear & tear isn't a huge issue for me, just wondering if I can save the $$ on Ti and simply get by with the AL. Thanks!

Both the Ti and Al RED Canon Electronic mounts function exactly the same.

The difference is in the BUILD, as the Titanium is a super resistant metal and offers far greater support for heavier lenses and also does not suffer from the effects of extreme temperature changes were the Al mount instead will suffer minor changes in it's structural shape, even so just by Microns it can be enough to cause some issues.

So bottom line, if you don't use Heavy bigger Canon lenses, and you don't shoot in extreme temperature conditions, then you are more then okay with the AL mount otherwise go with the Ti mount and be safe.
