  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC / SCARLET Firmware 3.3

I have the same issue. Every time I upgrade I start from scratch and redo all my settings. I wish that newer firmware would recognize that I have presets built and just "add" the new features in. I don't feel the new firmware is aware (so to speak) of any presets and just takes the camera back to factory settings. It is a pain to setup everything again.

Of course I love new firmware upgrades so keep em comin!
You want to export your presets to an SSD and reimport them after the firmware update. All my presets from 3.2.16 work just fine and dandy with 3.3.

It's primal. As much as I love this camera and everything it allows to be customized... this needs huge work. It takes many long steps and zero room for error to program a simple array of commands.

Working with Beta 3.3.3: this needs to be greatly refined for day to day implementation. It took me an hour to understand the workings, and a fraction of that time to realize I do not enjoy this designated workflow. Cumbersome and counter-intuitive.

I love everything RED but continue to allocate resources to saving us time. You've done such a great job so far and no doubt will continue.

have the same bug that focus distance jumps back to imperial after pressing metric and leaving the menu

3.3 is great. Still going to test out more but the new features and visuals on screen are nice to work with. The only thing I have noticed so far is a 24.98 FPS option on 4K with Scarlet. Is the still the 24.00 FPS option but labelled wrong? Sorry if this has been mentioned, came to the thread late and haven't read through all of the pages. As many have also mentioned, the videos are well appreciated, very informative.

Any word or insight to the 24.98 FPS option? Is this still the 24.00 FPS option. Thanks!

Very early in the testing, but so far I can report that our Epic & Redmote appear to be working fine.

"Outstanding Red Team; Outstanding! Get you a case of beer for that one."

I am probably missing something, but the audio out does not seem to change the levels for me. PICNIC, no doubt...

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

We found a problem controlling the right Headphone volume. Will be fixed in the next BETA.

Thanks for pointing that out,

Michael

The FPS shown in the upper left hand corner now corresponds with the actual frame-rate being used by the camera. This was previously rounded up to the nearest integer.

For example, for a 23.976 project rate you would set the FPS spinner to 23.98 for non vari-speed operation.

Thanks Matthew, this was a great fix, love it. Though I have the normal 23.98, but also a 24.98 and NO 24.00 option. Perhaps a UI photo would be better?

At a 23.976 project rate you would want to choose 23.98 in the FPS spinner.
At a 24.000 project rate you would want to choose 24.00 in the FPS spinner.

The FPS list presented in the FPS drop down will change based on your project rate.

I hadn't settled on a firm scheme for presets on the last build, so in my case it didn't much matter as I am redoing all my presets now anyway. But with the depth and complexity of presets needed to do what I'm now doing (having multiple buttons cycle through different settings or dialogs, each of which requires its own preset) it would be unimaginable to have to rebuild those presets every time I upgrade firmware. So I'm happy to hear that that's not supposed to be the case and that most presets SHOULD transfer with no problems between successive builds.

I still think that the ability to edit a preset already created is a glaring missing feature. It feels very primitive to have to remember exactly how you named a preset and then create a new one with the same name to overwrite it, all with no prompts to tell you you are about to overwrite an existing preset. But much more inconvenient than that is the situation where you revise your strategy as you go and realize that, for example, a custom cycle setup you created using multiple key mappings and presets for one key would also be useful duplicated to another key on another component (e.g., duplicating the setup for SH button A to LCD button top). Instead of just editing each preset to include new key mappings for the LCD button, you have to redo EVERY preset from scratch and add all the key maps at once to the same preset. That's where editing a preset could really save time.

Thanks for the replies Matthew, I will post a screenshot of the UI to illustrate what I see.

The presets don't seem to make it through the firmware upgrade process, but you can save your presets before upgrading and reload your preset files after upgrading. Not automatic, but better than recreating each preset.

- is there a way to just switch between 100% clean and normal DSMC menu without cycling thru all other modes ? I tried to create a setting for that but I had only 1 monitor connected and couldn't access the save preset menu while in clean mode ! Would this work if I connect an SDI with menu to create the 'clean EVF' preset ?

Hi Trent,

I tried again to accomplished this but since I don't have a HD-SDI monitor (and HDMI doesn't work with my particular monitor) I wasn't able to save the preset menu while in clean mode, just like Mikael above.

Anyway - hopefully in the release build (or the next build) there will be the possibility to assign a toggle between CLEAN (full-screen) and MENUS to a single LCD button, just as it used to be with the RED ONE. That would be great and extremely helpful.

Everything else is fabulous, thanks for the time to explain everything - the new customization options are awesome.

George

That was on the release update - I can't run Beta's... and yes, that was having saved them to a computer via the ssd card.

All re-done now. Just want to avoid having to do it each time a new build is released.

Cheers

I remember somebody suggesting a preset editor for mac/pc and one of the RED team responding they would look into it.

some hopes/guesses:
guess that will make it easy to share, copy, paste, edit and assign, parts, total set-ups, macro's and so on. maybe even a downloadable zip on the site that keeps track of most used and most creative/time-saving/intelligent use of the preset functions so you can custom make your own presets.

guess that will lead to a 'standard rental setup' that will cover the most important things and will keep things somehow close to you finding stuff where you expect to find it.

guess a cheap 8 GB SSD would be nice for ppl to carry arround with their own personal preferences [also suggested before] could put your own test-reels on that as well to test sound/playback/monitors [i know there are test patterns etc inside epics fw]

hope people will constrain; not changing setups on set by just inserting personal things that happen to fit into other peoples personal things without mutual consent (-;

thanks for the great update, just finished shooting a project; now some time to install it and test it!

I just ran into a strange bug; hot swap works when I remove the brick, the side handle battery takes over, but when I replace the battery, the camera turns off. Not a proper shutdown, and I get the improper shutdown alert when booting back up.

Minor problem really, but interesting.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

The presets don't seem to make it through the firmware upgrade process, but you can save your presets before upgrading and reload your preset files after upgrading. *Not automatic, but better than recreating each preset.

As I understand it a 'force_upgrade' folder on an ssd will upgrade the firmware without any question asked and erase all presets / previous settings.

If you simply rename the folder remiving 'force_' and just use 'upgrade' then your settings won't be erased while upgrading.

As many things change from one version to the next (count on it) it is always safer and recommended to force upgrade then reload settings but you can still give this a try next time... no guarantee things won't be messed up but if they are you can always force upgrade to reset everything :-)

AUDIO PLAYBACK WORKING?

AUDIO PLAYBACK WORKING?

Hi!

Audio Playback is working for everyone on their EPICs?

All menus are set up just as they should be on the EPIC I'm working with. However nothing comes through the headphones when I playback clips.

The bards are moving when I record and when I playback clips... the sound is great when I convert to ProRes through Redcine so it is definitely there, loud and clean.
Only problem is that I can't hear anything through the headphones. Tried different headphones as well, same result.
Both channels are "Active" in the VOLUME OUT and also I tried different level settings - all the way to maximum levels - and no sound.

Do other people have trouble listening to playback audio through their headphones plugged into the brain? Am I missing something perhaps?
Thanks for any advice!

Mike
