  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC QUAD BATTERY MODULE

That wasn't what was posted. The guy posted, in response to someone asking why one would want the quad module: "if you are willing to swap batteries every 20 minutes, you don't need the quad module". His point being that using the side handle requires frequent battery changes, but using the quad does not. There wasn't any FUD, it was just that people mis-read his posting.

At least that how I read his post when I first saw it.

Thanks John, that's exactly what I meant. Certainly wasn't intending to spread FUD. I guess I could've worded my post more carefully. I, for one, am extremely excited to receive the Quad module. My only point was that, without the quad module, you can certainly run all day assuming you have enough volts and enough chargers to keep up, AND you don't mind swapping the volts constantly with the side handle. FWIW, I shot an entire day on Epic recently with only the side handle and volts, and I never seemed to be getting behind on battery charges, nor did I mind swapping the volts in the handle often. I actually didn't feel like it was that often anyway.

With the module, it seems that 4 Volts will keep you powered for about an hour. You would let all 4 volts run down, then swap them out for 4 fresh ones. Not swapping each volt as they each run out. I completely understand how the system works.

This is probably the most exciting news about the module I've heard yet.

and its so damn elegant and sexy... been swapping 8 VOLTS ALL DAY on a Music video... and the DP is in HEAVEN... saying "You mean I dont have to power down... ever?"
and every hour I go in there and swap 1 or 2 in SECONDS and without ANY DISRUPTION to the under staffed 2 man camera dept.

There will also be some SICK EPIC footage as the DP is a genius fabricator and created a floro light drum machine with rocker switches... Ill post some pics...

VIDEO coming soon demonstrating how it mounts to the EPIC

Was a great day playing with epics and making the video with tim. Did some camera operation on the Music video and DIT for them. Always good times at Indent.

Hey Tim, thanks a lot for posting and answering! Awesome stuff!
Is there any way to keep shooting while swapping? It probably will not be possible
because of the shake you create while swapping, but still wanted to know....

I see the advantage in not having to power down, but sometimes it would be just awesome
to keep rolling without creating any shake in the shot.

I love the idea of the smaller and lighter 2-battery module; but the quad taking XL's is a very nice additional feature, and so many counter balance options available in a flash. With the fast re-boot times the dual can be the last piece of the puzzle to get.
Hi Roberto,

I do agree based on the criteria you've provided, but I also have a sneaking suspicion that once the Pro I/O module is outlined, that's going to be another "essential" part of everyone's shooting kit. And who knows what other modules are still in the works or yet to come. There was that wireless proxy thing, a separate SSD module, etc. Every one you stack on the back adds depth to the camera body, and it may make sense to stick with the dual to keep things reasonable. Just thinking long-term. Of course everyone has different preferences. :)

this is a very god point. In most of our setups, we would need a brick to power the WFF, and other accessories, or sometimes an ENG lens for 2k sports....

a couple of 12v lemos, and/or a p-tap would be great on this module. (hate p-tap, but useful).
Jarred has publicly stated that some form of power tap is coming. We just don't know what that is or how it will interface yet.

Is there any way to keep shooting while swapping?
Yes, the batteries are hot swappable.

VIDEO coming soon demonstrating how it mounts to the EPIC
Tim, I'm dying to see video!

Exactly. I really love the idea of using a dual. Hot swap is all you really need.

Hope the wireless proxy module comes out nice and thin, cause that's probably gonna be on all the time.

Completely agree on both points. I just hope they come "sooner" than "later!"

But two redvolts only run for 40minutes feel very short in production...u will find yourselves keep plug in and out the battery

about the external ports on the battery modules... couldn't do it. The modules rely on the camera brain to help control the switching and the load, and having an external power tap on the accessories would throw everything out of whack and into the unknown.

That said.. there is a solution coming that basically does what you are asking :)

.... to TEASE you guys... :)

TEASED...!

Hey Tim, can you send pictures of a stripped version of the module when you have a chance... de-tached from the body, and also the adaptor..... would be nice!!!!

enjoy and KEEP ON ROCKING!

Just something to add to all that are a bit jealous of Tim and his hot swappable capabilities....

with the RED BRICK and the side handle with a RED VOLT you could already do a hot swap, I didnt test it enough to see how the camera managed the order of wich battery would be consumed first because we didnt have the chargers for the RED VOLTS yet and i wanted to save them for a needed time of the shoot... just in case some shot that would benefit in not having the brick attached to camera crossed our minds....

...keep on rocking.....

edit:
ps... Tim already mentioned it on a previous page, but somehow i missed it..... So Tim and/or Jarred.... can you say if the side handle will be the last battery to drain.... it would be a great feature to choose the order they drain.... im just imagine the side handle battery being the safety power always you are using bricks, to hot swap them and to avoid possible accidental shut downs caused by v mount disengagements.....

thanks a lot, Häakon for your answer, but I guess I wasn't asking clear enough... I meant: can you keep rolling while swapping? I know they're hot swappable so you don't have to power down.
But it might be different when you're actually rolling?!

And also, when you take them out, you would most probably shake the camera. Or is that neglect able as long as the body is rock solid on its sticks?
(I already bugged Jarred with that question ;) )

thanks a ton!
