  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC QUAD BATTERY MODULE

Heh heh I should let you guys test stuff more often.. this is great. Good job Tim.

thanks Dude. Had some family medical stuff today and all is welll. Posting of video and detailed assembly pics (but no spec questions please) will
be ongoing tomorrow.

Fellow Reduser Sean Brown of Salem, a promising young director, will be assisting me on this shoot to the volcanic hot springs of the Oregon Cascade Range

I also have a very naughty Epic short coming up in two weeks ;) I'm seriously unable to sleep over how effin cool this stuff is.

I so WISH I could sit here and stack modules on this thing until it looked like a 5 foot party sub sandwich! - I need to get me a 24" balance plate fo sho!

Red gets shit for being rogues and black sheep... but this is some seriously ELEGANT kit. well done. the privilege is all mine... thanks again Jarred.

2012 better not be the end... I got too many cool toys to play with and learn!

what does this weigh, because with the quick start up time of the epic, do you really need this? seems kinda a waste of money. + it only takes redvolts, which dont work with anything else. Kinda don't see the need to switch from V lock's

If you don't mind constantly swapping the Volts every 20 minutes all day long, then you don't need it.

So what about powering accessories: follow focus, transmitters, cinetape?
Wouldn't a power out connector make sense on the quad module, or is it included? (can't see any on the pictures)
I know that a single redvolt might struggle powering anything else besides the Epic, but 4 in parallel should be able to power additional items.

Thats the sole reason for me not utilizing my redvolts, I tend to need power supply for at least a WFF, and then V-lock makes most sense as is.
Currently I only use them as backup in the grip for continuous operation.
But for traveling it's of course a neat option.

this is a very god point. In most of our setups, we would need a brick to power the WFF, and other accessories, or sometimes an ENG lens for 2k sports....

a couple of 12v lemos, and/or a p-tap would be great on this module. (hate p-tap, but useful)
Im sure the proI/O will have something, but for some configs - this setup might be all you need.

While I am not allowed to discuss specs - the module is very light - even loaded with 4
Volts. If you don't see the obvious applications (shooting more streamlined - reduced gack
And no risk of a v mount popping off by an inadvertent bump - then
It's probably not for you - however it comes with the Epic X package as standard

And the beauty is you can sell it then and buy more red bricks
Red gives us CHOICES - which is never a bad thing.

All I can say is - I felt the same way before this arrived and
Now I want to use my Red Bricks for powering my cool lights

I can't speak for Red here- but this is a prototype and I know Jarred said SOMETHING WOULD HAVE that functionality in the Release version.

Red is definitely putting the thought into these modules that some of you are quickly dismissing
as poor design - give it a chance - this is just the tip of the iceberg of what's to come.

Meantime - changing Volts every 20 minutes? HUH???

With 4 in the Quad - and 1 in the handle - you can run over an hour between changes.
do please be careful not to spread FUD / especially over a simple and elegant battery module.

If its not for you - Red has your back and all your existing power works!

If you don't mind constantly swapping the Volts every 20 minutes all day long, then you don't need it.

Pure FUD. 4 Volts will run well over an hour and while you change those 4 out, the 1 Volt in the handle allows you to take 20 minutes to swap out the 4 Volts and keep shooting!

You can also accomplish this with the V Mount and the Side Handle Volt.

CHOICES and CHOICES - but a Quad Module does NOT mean you are changing Volts every 20 minutes that is silly- unless you only want to swap out the one that drains? Why would anyone do that?

Hi Tim,

Forgive my ignorance but am I understanding that the volts in the quad module drain one at a time? So as one depletes it automatically jumps to another one making it hot swappable?

Thanks, p

That is correct... and then when those 4 drain, it switches to the Side Handle VOLT.

I think J. Stevenson was actually replying to someone that suggested the quad was unnecessary -- that you could just power down and swap the side handle volt easily because the boot-up is so fast.

In other words, you're both on the same side here

Will there be a double battery module available allowing for a shorter millipede?

I love the idea of the smaller and lighter 2-battery module; but the quad taking XL's is a very nice additional feature, and so many counter balance options available in a flash. With the fast re-boot times the dual can be the last piece of the puzzle to get.

Hi Jarred and Tim,

Cool system - I like the way the RVXL's and the RV's can play together.

If it's not a big secret could we get an indication of how to calculate the cameras dimensions based on what modules we are planning to use ? I was planning on getting some hard cases made this week and would like to get it as close as possible. Pro I/O Module too.

Thanks,

Hey Matt- Jarred has asked that I NOT post any dimensions or specs yet as its a prototype and subject to change... as we ALL want to figure out case configs... but maybe if you email him he will tell you? :)

We are all friends here but I just want people to be sensitive to posting things like "If you want to swap batteries every 20 minutes, get the quad module" when that is blatantly NOT true.
They drain SEQUENTIALLY... so you can let 3 die and then swap them out... or let all 4 drain and wait until it flips to side handle... and then swap all 4.

For those asking about weight... again I cant post exact specs but I will say this... the MODULE and 4 VOLTS weighs a surprising amount LESS than 1 Red Brick and the (what now looks unsightly) Metal V Mount Battery plate and universal mount and lemo cable :) - The Quad Module loaded with 4 VOLTS weighs less and looks a LOT sexier!

JARRED: Can you confirm that RED has thought about all the modules and storage and has plans for a case or insert or both?

That wasn't what was posted. The guy posted, in response to someone asking why one would want the quad module: "if you are willing to swap batteries every 20 minutes, you don't need the quad module". His point being that using the side handle requires frequent battery changes, but using the quad does not. There wasn't any FUD, it was just that people mis-read his posting.

At least that how I read his post when I first saw it.

OK. no harm no foul - hard to tell context sometimes. The beauty is people have a choice between 100% Red Bricks or 100% Volts or a combination of Bricks and Volts. How cool is that?

Meantime a Quad Module LOADED with 4 VOLTS weighs less than 1 Red Brick and V Mount Plate/Lemo cable.
