  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

More news...

No one else is curious about this?

Using a spinning mirror is pretty complicated and expensive. But using a prism with a ground glas would work in the realm of say 10K. The downside: you lose approx. 1 stop of light sensitivity.

Check P&S Technik for their OVF for the SI2K.

Im curious as to know how an optical viewfinder would work with this camera. The D-21 has an optical viewfinder because it has a rotating gate (correct me if im wrong.) Does this mean that we are going to be getting more mechanical parts for the camera? And how will it work?

Yes I left out prisms but I can't imagine anyone is willing to take the light loss, optical loss, weight or cost of that either.

Very curious! Strangely quiet....

An optical viewfinder is the best place to light from but it is hard to deny the convinces of histograms, controls, and other information these days.

It all sounds excellent, but I'm most interested in the touchscreen LCD... if it can be used for focus pulling. I think that's one area where RED could really outperform the competition. Glad to hear it may be in the works!

I can't wait for the prices!
touchscreen LCD is good; I wonder if there
will be a nonTouch version at a much lesser price :)

and another...OVF oooooohhhh!!! touch screen LCD is great as long as you keep those greasy paws clean. Am interested to know how the old OVF is gonna work on these cams. Luckily i don't have to think on it too hard...just have to wait for the RED team to release it and tell us.

BTW love the RED logo on the plane. Perfect finishing touch!!

Wish I could make it to IBC but have to fly to Poland for a few pick ups...

First off the gate doesn't spin the shutter does.
I will bet money against a spinning shutter for the DSMC. I would lean towards a beam splitter.

Touch screen....
wireless touch screen?

Point and focus....
latency?
I would think that it would have to roll just past critical to know for certain where it is. I would think. It could be very subtle. I am super excited at the possibility but also concerned at the "stupid robot" possibilities it could introduce. I have a feeling FF's aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Now we just sit back and wait for J and J to prove me wrong.

Maybe its because im from a different generation but I really dont understand the constant creaming for OVF. Why? We're recording to digital, so use the digital EVF, it's awesome, you're looking at what you're actually recording. Done. Using OVF you are inherently NOT looking at what you're recording. Id rather see it after it's hit the digital processing to have confidence that WYSIWYG

But enough people must have demanded it for Jim to 180 as such.

This could just be me misunderstanding the word module but doesn’t this suggest that the ovf is not inbuilt? I'm thinking something like a prism that can be inserted behind the lenses mount, meaning those who want an ovf can pay for it and the rest of us don't have to lose the extra stop. Let the operator chose what the camera is, doesn’t this tend to be the RED attitude.

I'm VERY curious to see how they pull off an OVF... The OVF lens mount sounds most plausible to me.

New rods and baseplate system? due to this being a smaller announcement and product, any chance of hinting at when we might see these? only curious because i am in the middle of getting ready to adapt my current system to be more functional.

Absolutely the OVF will be an optional add on.

Personally, I doubt I will use it. However I know plenty that the addition of it will tip them into the RED Camp.

Optical Viewfinder is the one thing that was always missing from the red. This would be my No1 choice of all the possible upgrade options. I am really very intrigued about how it will come about. Please Jim, tell us more about this when you can. OVF OMG!!

I'm with Shawn. Optical viewfinders are, like, soooo yesterday. Hopefully my eyes won't react to the Bomb EVF like they do with the current one but even so, knowing I'm seeing sensor output is very comforting.

The touchscreen focus idea is brilliant. I've also been banging on about being able to pre-program and rehearse marks and set bezier curves to pulls. Again, as you're monitoring the sensor output, you can actually know it's in focus instead of just assuming that everything is perfect and the numbers are lining up. This new technology has enormous potential but sometimes we need to let go of what we've "always done". And I don't think latency should be an issue. Stills cameras focus too fast. All the Red boys have to do is slow it down a little, put some pre-emptive thinking in there and most of the (currently rare) errors will disappear IMHO.

If it works, touch screen focusing will have it's place however, as with all things, some things will be done better analog and somethings will be frick'n awesome with the high tech.

There is little point in debating it too much further because as far as I am concerned this is a rumor and not an announced feature. I know Jarred is quoted but even at that we have no idea on the specs of the supposed feature.

So yes... awesome idea.

Maybe they are going to angle the olpf and bounce the image off that, then onto a nice gound glass for the optical view finder . . .

Wait a second (and excuse me for my ignorance), but what do you mean by optical viewfinder? You mean a mirror-based system, like the Arriflex or the Bolex RX series? If so, what's the advantage of that? I always thought that the great thing about digital cameras (for motion at least) is that you exactly (or almost exactly) what you're shooting.

I can see the use of it in photo-mode (in order to compete with the DSLRs), but for "video" it's just a backward move...
