  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

More news...

imagine a multitouch panel, where you can say "I want this and this sharp" and the camera automatically sets the focus plane and the iris to make it work...

Maybe its because im from a different generation but I really dont understand the constant creaming for OVF. Why? We're recording to digital, so use the digital EVF, it's awesome, you're looking at what you're actually recording. Done. Using OVF you are inherently NOT looking at what you're recording. Id rather see it after it's hit the digital processing to have confidence that WYSIWYG

But enough people must have demanded it for Jim to 180 as such.

Yeah, it is a strange request in the digital age. But then I am not a DP.

I'm just super glad we sold our old EVF for a premium... and just sold our base plate and Red Cradle and Red Drive... in prep for all this new stuff coming out (didnt expect a post this soon).

Cool stuff indeed. I am most excited about

1. Full Size XLR on the new I/O

ok, everything else listed is exciting.

Anybody want to buy some batteries and an 5" LCD?:001_tongue:

Could the touch-screen focusing be programmable? I mean, could you digit in a series of focus-points with timing?

You don't really need the touch-screen element for that.

Programmable focusing points is like digitally marking to rack focus, a very nice digital FF.

Sony prosumer cameras have shot transition. It goes from state A to B (considering focal length, focus distance, shutter, white balance, pretty much every camera config) within the determined time frame.

On the Sony Z7 you can set two focus marking points that you can navigate back and forth using the focus ring. RED could go further and provide us a digital FF with several marking points.

Considering RED is making a camera with a lens with remote control capabilities... I'd assume that and MUCH more are pretty much a given.

I think that all his posts (baseplate, accs, batts, I/O mod), except for the Bomb EVF, are in regards to Epic and Scarlet...

Rather than rack focus, I was thinking about dolly-shots: it could be nice when using those cheap mini-dollies where there's only room for the tripod and nothing else.

Very nice! Now I hope to hear some solid new release dates tomorrow for Scarlet and Epic X and these new developments! ...

Also I'm hoping for a bump on the specs of the Scarlet line! More frame rates! Bigger sensor at a lower price point!

Now I get your point Emiliano.

Well, what can we do besides crying in the forums...

I'm sure RED will incorporate these awesome features.

But, you must be talking about the Fixed Scarlet, right?

I doubt he has to worry about what he labels his stuff.

I don't know what's cooler - the fact that Jim keeps cranking out amazing products or that his jet has the shortest tail number I've ever seen.

...you know it would be really cool if you redid the tail to November - 1 - Romeo. but 2 tango aint bad.

thats interesting, Jim's plane, N2T, is registered to a company in Hillsboro, Oregon, just a few miles from where i'm at right now

Great news. Is there going to be an update to the DSMC section on the RED website, because that would be great.

I agree - I'd much rather see what I'm recording when filming video. I prefer a screen most of the time though anyway. I do prefer an optical VF on an SLR though...

wanna see the competition when red announce the HDR Brain with a beam splitter or something else...

-OVF :some DOPs like it for focusing i guess :) cool when you try to nail down a 5k picture

Can anyone from RED comment on how some of this "trade-in from RED One to Epic" will happen?

I'm VERY excited about all of these changes, but any thoughts on how this will happen and what exact parts will be able to "exchange" versus have to sell? Just wondering if things changed since the original trade-in announcements. Like this from the FAQ:

"3 key additional modules, the RED Battery Expansion Module, the RED Media Module and the RED I/O Module."

For instance, is this the Pro I/O module or is there an upgrade puchase if we'd prefer the Pro I/O. Does the upgrade include any batteries or do we just have to sell ours and buy new ones for the Battery Expansion Module?

Thanks for any additional trade-in info. We're getting excited about this.

Well, I was thinking about Scarlet in general, even though, with the bigger sensors brains, having the camera changing the focus in-time and the subject reaching is mark would be quiet difficult because of the smaller Depth of Field.

Kevin,

I'm pretty sure you will get what the origional Epic-X deal was and nothing more.
I would like to be wrong here, but I think it's going to be pretty straight forward. Upgrades and trade offs could be incredibly complicated.

The lack of an OVF was the main thing holding many high-profile DP's such as Roger Deakins from shooting digital. So it may not make sense for the majority of red's market, but the niche it makes sense for is really valuable.

Also, a touchscreen focus system is not anything new but the key is in the implementation (lag, timings, precision, programmability, etc). What lenses will it be compatible with, can it be retrofitted to traditional motors?

Doesnt the D21 already have an OVF? So...I dont see how that can be holding him back from using that system

When you can afford a plane like that you can also afford an accountant to tell you the least expensive way to own and operate it. :) I imagine it's similar to an LLC but for your airplane. Just set up the organization to exclusively lease it to you and then hire out all the pilots, maintenance etc through the company which then sells you tickets. *wild speculation* IANAA

Hillsboro does seem like a pretty random place though to base it. Especially in the middle of a residential neighborhood. I would have expected it to be registered on Orcas Island. I stayed in what used to be one of Jim's hangers for a few nights. Very roomy and nice, more than large enough to be a small airline's headquarters. :D Maybe because Washington and California have Sales Tax, pick a spot in the middle? Same allure as filming in New Mexico or setting up a VFX shop in New Orleans.

Shawn, if you have ever used the D21, you will know that the best thing about it is the OVF, no eye strain, funny flickering colors in your eye..etc I'm really surprised at peoples reticence towards an OVF. I don't know if you have shot film, but moving over to the RED for a majority of my work from my film cameras, the biggest thing i missed was...yes you guessed it. You can't beat looking straight down the bottle.

Robert, I dont get eye strain or funny flickering on my EVF, but the one time I looked through an OVF did those things to me. Maybe it's a generational thing.
