  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC production...

Jim, will Epic-M production stop after Epic-X starts shipping?

Jim, does that mean you guys managed to machine those 250+?! That's some mental production going on at the HQ

Previous estimate was that EPIC-M would start shipping in January. They did.

EPIC-X would start shipping before NAB. They will.

All EPIC-X orders place at NAB (or before with a Stage) will ship by summer's end 2011.

Not sure what has changed.

Jim

thank you Jim. I misunderstood. This is great to hear!

Jim, I don't have the past posts to back this up, and maybe it's false impression ... but I think what some are reacting to is the notion that more Stage 2 Epic-X's would be shipping before NAB.

Or at least, I get the feeling from many of the Stage 2 people expected their camera before or right around NAB. And now that's unlikely unless the person is very, very high on the Stage 2 list.

I know it's hard to predict all the Stages/timing (though it appears you guys are getting better with time estimates, which is great!) ... but you might clear up some speculation by giving an estimate of when you think Stage 2 will be 100% complete. That way those with Stage 2 deposits have a more clear sense of best and worst case scenarios (I don't think "end of summer" is satisfying to them, because that estimate includes Stage 3/3.5 and orders taken at NAB.)

Note: I'm not a Stage 2 reservation holder, just trying to help :patriot:

Also, don't mean to take away from the amazing achievement mentioned in the OP -- I mean ... it's not just that 250 Epics have been machined, but it's also what they have been doing! And they are barely, barely getting warmed up.

That to me is more exciting than whether I might have to wait an extra month or so to get my hands on one.

Thanks for the update Jim :)

Anthony

I think the perceived change is that Epic-X originally was scheduled for ("small quantities by end of Feb and ramping up by March and shipping in quantity by April") was your original post. But we most all know things changes daily . no big deal.

Since you also stated that "EPIC=M will not affect EPIC-X availability (separate lines)"
although 250 M's means demand far exceeded your expectations so perhaps this did create some supply side issues for X... ??

Insane demand is a good problem for RED to have :)

Question: Given NAB is now 26 days away... is there ANY chance there will at least be a final package price and availability of whatever accessories will be ready? Most of us just need on/off and record :)

I am #103 with an early ship date... with EPIC-X so close... there is no longer a $ advantage in my market to justify going M this late in the game.

I just hope Im in the few X's before NAB... :cheers2: not bitching at all. Just trying to help people remember this is a moving target and once the line gets
going... its going to fly...

We have EPIC-M production pretty well sorted out... although in small quantities.

EPIC-X production line is being set up and is still more of an unknown. There are so many moving parts here that it is impossible to give absolute production dates and quantities. Our customers wanted to know what was going on and we gave our best estimates given the knowledge we had and the history of how things actually work.

While I think we are getting much better at predicting... the complexity of this project is hard to verbalize. We are certainly doing our best, but there seems to be obstacles every day that surprise us. I am more comfortable getting all cameras ordered by NAB out by summer's end than I am how many EPIC-Xs will ship before NAB and when real numbers start rolling. We have hired the best trained professionals possible to head up production, but they walked into a situation with a ton of work to do and not much time.

Our goal is to satisfy our customers, not frustrate them. Delays are frustrating. The solution, in hindsight, would to have never put out estimates... even though everyone knows "things can change".

Having said that... some EPIC-Xs will ship before NAB.

I don't believe there is an easy or right answer. I don't believe that a zero information strrategy is in your DNA. FWIW I think you have done a heckuva job of walking an impossible line. Good on ya'

Cheers - #19

That means I could get it at the end of year or early 2012 because now as a "fresh member" of Stage 4.

Then I should re-think soon about EPIC-M or even EPIC-M Titanium order just in case that I would need it earlier...

Thank you Jim for being in touch and for all information you published.

We have feature film shooting starting on 1st of June.
My Red is #1584 and informal Stage 2 thread (reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=51814&page=30) shows my #1584 at #169 in line. Wondering if it is possible to get 169th Epic-X by 1st of June because in other way i should find other small camera for shooting action scenes and which image could be ok to be cutted with MX footage.

Will be very helpful to know your thought.
Thank you and sorry for asking you again to make this kind of prognoses.

Jim,

I think everyone understands the kind of issues that can crop up, even if they can't fully comprehend the complexities of trying to get EPIC developed and into production.

That's making cameras, and delivering cameras, and you're giving best estimates, and we understand and appreciate that. :cheers2:

One thing you could do better than estimate is give hard dates that don't depend *directly* on production or delivery:

What date do you intend to start taking Stage 3 deposits?

What date do you intend to start taking deposits on Scarlet Fixed? Can you at least say if that will be possible at NAB time?

A small matter of financial planning for a budget-constrained guy! I need to know how much credit to keep on my 'camera' card :violin:

Thanks

Mike

Most of the EPICs that will ship before NAB will be EPIC-Ms, although some EPIC-X. Do you have an order in for EPIC-M?

Jim

Hi Jim

What is your current thinking on how far/long the Epix-M's run will go? Obvously their equity is reduced a tad once Epic-x ships but I still feel it is an interesting offering for the market (especially to hire companies and those of us whose lives have changed with Red).

We all have our own personl and business formulas for establishing the value (to us) of a piece of equpment. Sometimes even emotions play in ;-) Any help from you guys is apreciated..

thanks

"But ours is an M" will be a good non-rational selling point.
Like what we see around us these days.

Or... If it's rational, I hope it will be spelled out!

Cheers!

Sorry if I missed something in regards to your post. I want to be in stage 3 group... when can we place an order? When placing the order do we first need a deposit, or pay in full at order?

Love what you do Jim!
Eric

Jim, folks are only frustrated because the camera is so enticing and they want one now. Everyone has their own reasons and timelines, I know in my little world, I want to hike all over Italy in May with an Epic not a R1, but I'll do it with the R1 if I have too. I am sure we don't fully understand all the moving parts and complexities of production. I can imagin that no one wants stage 2 to begin more than you do.

1 question, When will the stage three commitments be called for? I'm not asking for a date, but a point in time, like; when stage 2 starts shipping, when stage 2 is done, on day one of NAB, etc. I assume it'll be same deal, sign up before the deadline and they will ship by R1 delivery date.

Thanks again for you commitment, passion and unfailing effort.
