  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic & old glass

OK, per request... :)

That last one isn't fair :) I couldn't care less about the lens, camera, or exposure. Simply beautiful. Keep em coming Gunleik!

I too love those superspeed images -- the one I quoted yesterday, and before that the old asian lady sitting on the boat/dock. They're so rich in colour/contrast without being oversaturated or overcontrasty... It's unnaturally perfect, if that makes sense. I think I asked before, but is there any chance of a r3d/RMD or are most/all of these images for clients?

I used to do stills until I was 18, but skipped it for music, then came back to imagery 10 years ago and have stayed there.

Have come to love to do stills again, as the turnaround is somewhat more gratifying than the other projects I work on that have several years turnaround...

So I have come back to them, and now I actually have some stills projects in the cooking. For exhibition...
I will come back to one, shortly...

As to the girls, most contact me...

But they are not all Norwegian. Mostly they are just quick tests, but some will not only be that.
Not what I am working on now, if I can manage it.

As to r3d's, I don't give them out.

If it isn't purly testimages.

And actually I wouldn't find them easilly, as I just make tiffs of the frames I want, and hardly go back to the RAW image after initial "grade", which often is flat with log.

Anyhow. Very few of the girls will I continue to work with, but some, will def stay on.

Cryptic?

I'll do a Ketch... :)

Hahahaha

And then not so cryptic anymore...

FD Glass

FD Glass

Any one have any views about Canon FD glass particularly the faster L and S.C.C lenses. Im interested to see how they compare to K35 look and how mechanicaly good they are ie focus rotation, and breathing etc.

Some companies are offing EF mounts for the lenses so they are easier to mount. id also wonder if EF is possible is a PL fixed mount possible too.

Canon FDs I have, including all of their good stuff. They will be part of S.A.L.T. III or IV which I am trying to organize on the East Coast. In fact, much of the old glass noted on this thread will be put through the test, including throwing these up on a projector and then a EPIC/Scarlet. Ed Mikva (sp??) has a FD to ES conversion kit that fits some FDs. I have tried to contact that guy in England and, after 6 months, have not received a reply. Since then, FD-specific mounts for the EPIC/Scarlet have come to the market.

SALT III will be old cinema lenses. SALT IV will be old still lenses. (And no, I am not part of the SALT I or II teams. I just want to show them how we do it East Coast style)

In addition to my lenses (Canon FDs, Lomos, Lomo speeds, Lomo Anas, Lomo zoom, Super Baltars, old Angie zoom, ols zeiss zoom, CZJ DDRS), so far volunteers have offered Contax Zeiss and I have acceess to a set of Zeiss standard speeds. Would be nice to add Kinoptiks, Schneider Cine-Xenon, vintage Cooke, K35, Kowa anas, SMC Takumars, and a few others.

I was shooting a series for Discovery Science on K35s, but switched to canon FD lenses midway through because of availability of the K35s. Unfortunately, we are shooting on AF-100s and GH2s, but these lenses have really peaked my interest. I have since tried them on a Scarlet and I was very pleased with their "look". I have yet to do any side by side testing, but my gut tells me Canon FD lenses share some DNA with the K35s. I'm betting its a similar relationship Zeiss Contax lenses have with Super Speeds. There is a good reason Optex chose to rehouse the FD 14mm/f2.8 and 135mm/f2 in order to complete a set of K35s. Of course, certain lenses are better than others, but for the most part all the FD lenses I've used have been fantastic! The 50mm 1.4 is only a hundred bucks on ebay and it really shines on the Scarlet. I even like the look of the "Nifty Fifty" (50mm 1.8 that costs about $25 these days). Basically, I'm shocked people aren't piecing together full sets of these lenses for their Scarlet/Epic. You could spend a few grand and have yourself a really nice set of 70's Canon glass that is fully manual and looks great. Shit, you could spend a few hundred if you didn't need fast glass and just wanted something to get going. They also made some pretty great zoom lenses like the 20-35/f2.8. Anyway, I'm pretty excited by the Canon FD lens series and look forward to doing more testing very soon. BTW, I'd stay away from the EF mount adapter and just go straight for the FD mount for Scarlet/Epic... its only $500 and works like a charm :)

HEy Michael

I own a set of old rehoused Cooke Speed Panchros... If you end up doing anything in NYC I can contribute... granted they are not on a job. I also used to have a set of PL mounted Schneider cine xenons... I sold them to a friend in the city and he would probably into putting them up too. Let me know it sounds like an interesting test.

Who makes the best / most price worthy FD mount? Did not think of this but your right there is so many cool FD lenses on ebay for pocket money. highspeeds, swingshifts and all... its nuts.

For example strap this one on and this thread would be taken to a new level...

Ahhh man, that exact lens is on my watch list! Looks like I might have some competition now :) Yeah, there are some great lenses, and some super cheap ones that perform quite well. I think there is only one FD mount available for purchase (ebay) at the moment and I'm not sure if its approved by Red. I'd hate to be the one spreading false info on here. Maybe someone from Red can chime in? Its a really simple mount to manufacture and I'd be surprised if we didn't see a bunch of them start popping up soon. Canon actually put the hard part to make (locking ring) on the lens itself. Its a very solid mount and clever design.

Sounds very good. Im on a different contient but will support this as much as I can. Let me know what we can do to help.

Currently in older glass we prefer Leica R and have two sets from 19mm to 400mm. We do have some longer FD glass 50 300 and 300mm f2.8 which is very good. We like the k35 look and it seems that as has been pointed out Optex would not have used the 14mm or 135mm with out good reason. I think its worth collecting a few before every one decides that want a set.

Im looking at lens mount exchange as well as Epic FD mounts too. We have some very good lens techs locally who can re enginner lenses from either adding gears to full rehouse.

I'm on an other continent too, but I think the lenses I'd suggest for a test are abundant in the US as well: Minolta SR glass (aka MD/MC) !

Some people call them poor man's Leicas, and that's not far off, since they cooperated for quite a while and Minolta even made some lenses for Leica (their very first zoom, for example). Expect not only excellent optical and mechanical craftsmanship, but one thing that makes them stand out for film use: Minolta made their own glass and took great care to make colors look the same through all the range!

Apart from some very old versions with Thorium, which got yellow with age, it still holds true for all the rest. If everything else is the same, you don't need much of a color correction when changing lenses.

So, go for them! Most of these are still less popular than Nikon or Canon FD and can be found for attractive prices. I would challenge a manual Nikkor 50mm 1.4 any time with my Rokkor PG 50mm 1.4, for example, and it comes far cheaper.

Only a few gems, like the 58mm 1.2, the 85mm Varisoft or the 24mm Variable Field Curvature fetch high prices. Yes, I got them all before they went through the roof ;-)

How do you fix them to an Epic? Easy: get the Leica-M mount, there is an adapter from MD/MC to Leica-M.

I have rehoused FD 14mm. Flare profile is so radically different from the K35's that I'm convinced it's totally different engineering. I would need to test more FD lenses to confirm this. But as far as how the image resolves, the FD 14mm doesn't cut too bad with the K35's.

Yeah, that 14mm is definitely in a category by itself... fantastic lens! This show I'm working on has a flare built into the interview setup where we actually use 2 maglites shining into the lens. I'm finding all of the FDs to flare a bit differently than the K35s. I'm getting more of a washout flare with the FDs. I wonder if it might be the SSC coating that is different? Anyway, still a great bargain if you ask me, and not a very expensive experiment :)

Just got the Canon mount for testing... :)

Pitty There is more old Nikon glass around here. The Canon glass is all pretty new.

So I guess that is for a separate thread... :)

I just ordered quite a few FD lenses and an FD mount. Among the high quality lenses I also picked up two different 75-200 mm macro zooms... for about 15 dollars each. can not wait to get the mount to test these. want to collect a whole set of FD primes now I got the lenses marked red so if any one want to get rid of the onces missing Im interested:

Canon FD
14mm f2.4
15mm fisheye f 3.4
24mm f1.4
35mm f2
50mm f1.2
85mm 1,2L
100mm f2

These FDs are all the fastest gl;ass in that focal length. I would suggest the 55mm rather than the 50mm though. The 55 is considered one of the best lenses Canon ever made. On the coatings, Canon had several iterations. They stopped engraving the coating type on the lens after the S.S.C. breech-style mount. They all had that coating, which was their best, after that.

I have about 30 or so FD lenses that I am trying to get around to listing on Ebay. Except for the 35, these are slower glass in their respective focal lengths. I also have aone of the 35mms with the thorium glass. People say an aged thorium glass with the champagne tint is great for B&W. Might be neat to test that on the new EPIC Monochrome.

What views on the nikon 135mm f2 DC lens.

Does it breathe ? its charachter appears to me to have more of that Leica pop, may be it would inter cut with Leica R's.

All views welcome and valued.
