  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim and RED crew,

I wouldn't worry too much about a 10 to 15 second start-up time for the Epic and Scarlet cameras. For 99% of all shoots I've done, the crew knows when we're ten to fifteen seconds away from rolling the camera. A dead give away is when the actors finally hide their sides and the buff and puff crew do finishing touches on the talent. The script supervisor confirms the take on the slate, the second AC steps in front of the camera, THEN the AD asks to ROLL THE CAMERA, the sound guy confirms sound speed, we slate and magic happens. Every department gets their 10 seconds and then some. Why should camera be any different?

Personally, I think way too much has been made about start-up times of RED versus film cameras. I'll take 10 seconds or for that matter, 90 second start-up times any day over the many other obligatory protocols we follow (all for good and necessary reasons) day in and day out on the set.

And oh, as great as film is and has been the past 100 years, what's the start-up time for the day's rushes? 24 hours? What????????????????

Just keep doing what you are doing guys. New technology requires new set protocols and practices. You are blazing new territory. It is all good.

Thanks again for all the hard work.

I would be cautious about making too many assumptions about the working prototype. This is a very complex project, there are many levels to it.

You all may be right, but until Jim says, "we have a working prototype" I'm not gonna get worked up about it.

Jay

At least the cameras turned ON. Three named prototypes is real progress. Hopefully Tattoos aren't far behind.

Epic turned ON!:w00t:

I just stopwatch timed how long it took to start shooting video with my 5D. Just under 5 seconds using the SET button as a user key. Just at or over 5 manually going into Live view. 3 seconds to take a still.

10 seconds is NOT that big a deal, given all that DSMC offers. Heck, if I were witnessing a disaster and was trying to capture eyewitness video, it'd take that long or longer to dig my iphone out of my pocket, launch the camera, and start recording.

ˆ
Exactly.

The only thing you guys have to make sure not to miss is the target release date! :tongue_smilie:

There must be thousands of indie films waiting for Scarlet to finally go into production.

I know I have a few.

Wildlife??

Wildlife??

Great news for my work in controlled conditions, not so great for my wildlife work. Hopping in a future firmware this "problem" will be solved.

My startup time in the morning is at least one hour.
Only if I get woken up by the delivery guy with my scarlet I might beat its ten seconds...

10 seconds is fine for Film & TV work.

Will any of the Epic battery modules allow for a hot swap?

Will the Epic's TOD clock stay jam synced when powered down?

Jonathan

Battery swap

Battery swap

Yes, the rear battery module allows for hot swap operation.

So for example, if you were using REDVOLT XL batteries..

Camera is powered from battery 1, when camera switches over to battery 2, swap 1 for 3 ....etc

aaaah! what?! i guess i'll have to switch to the other Flutting RAW 5k digital cinema camera that has a bootup time under 10 seconds.

That's not acceptable.....unless the Epic ships by June :drool5:

Seriously, I don't think it is such a big deal. Hot swap and low power consumption are welcome improvements.

hmmm what can be done in 10 secs??? get a soda? Think about our place in the universe? talk to the crew and tell ask them if everybody is ready to roll?? check everybody is on point?? ask the actors how they are feeling!! Ect Ect...

My (relatively) new Telstra mobile phone takes 35 seconds to boot up and it takes 95 seconds before I can actually access phonebook entries.

if your camera isn't rolling 15 sec before you need to shoot there's something wrong anyway, no matter what genre you're shooting.
