  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC missed spec...

remember.. both DSMC battery modules ( the 4 bank and 2 bank ) are hot swappable solutions.. you never need to turn the camera off during the day if you have enough batteries to keep it going.

When one battery dies it switches over to the next one automatically.

Jarred, there is an estimate on the cost and life of each battery?

yup.. the small batteries ( REDVOLT ) that fit in the side handle are the same as that fit in the module. We do make a REDVOLT XL that is a double pack that will only fit in the rear 4 bank module.

If we use the two side handles, does that become hot swappable? Like if the battery in handle 1 dies, does it then use the battery in handle 2 and we can change out the dead one?

The bottom handle does not have room for a battery unfortunately.

Sounds a lot like Stockholm syndrome, not that the news is that bad, but people seem willing to applaud even when things are getting worse.
Beside that I think is excellent marketing to identify the missed specification, and singularize it as The Exception.

Chiper? sounds a lot like an alias - what a wonderful first post-

this sounds a lot like TROLL SYNDROME :icon_bs:

sparc = yummy

sparc = yummy

I'm guessing that they have a few OpenSparc cores on those ASICs. It's quite cool - there are a few open source implementations that you can download (as VHDL) and write onto an FPGA or use on an ASIC.
How cool would that be! :drool5:I got to play with a Sun Ultra1 Workstation - had to get surgical on the integrated NVRAM/Battery module to make it retain its MAC address again. Brought about some fond memories of my first lines of C++ code written on a Sparcstation more than a decade ago.
These days everyone and their mom are integrating ARM cores with some flavour of DSP, like the TI OMAP SoC or Apples A4 Chip in their iPad. But ARMs are for sissies.
Since RED is the embodiment of badassness they definitely would have to roll some Sparc-goodness into their chips.
Aw, well, speculative tangent...

BTW, i just reread the Scarlet specs - it is just mindboggling. Still hard to believe that it will become a reality, it sounds way too good to be true.

bad news...

bad news...

10 seconds is fine.

10 seconds is way too much for some of us who use the red one for wildlife shooting without the big crew !! Unless a sleep mode can instantly/fully wake up the camera AND let a red brick live for 4 hours, so you can spare carrying too many batteries, as you have to with the red one...

Any word on if there will be a pre-record function? That and sleep mode would completely obviate any concerns ENG people might have.

If I could pick one spec to miss, though, this'd definitely be it.

Yes on prerecord.

But, with integrated hot-swap capabilities, you will just need to keep feeding it batteries as you lie in wait. No need to power down at all. Obviously it's a little different from having an SR on standby for days on end without battery problems but electronic vs film is another discussion. Bottom line is, with planning and the paying of attention, there would seem no reason these cameras couldn't work for you. Just don't shut it down!
