  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC missed spec...

10-15 second start up is fine with me, but I was thinking, is there a possibility of adding in a "sleep" mode where for people that may be facing run and gun situations and 10-15 seconds is too long, they could put the camera to "sleep" and achieve some power savings, but be able to get back to shooting much sooner than a full shut down and power up?

Also, how does this effect the Scarlet models?

In an effort to get the bad news out as soon as we have it, it looks like we will likely miss (at least) one proposed spec on EPIC/Scarlet. The engineers tell me that a 2 second startup time is now not possible given all the changes/additions to the program. Our current prototypes are starting up in 15 seconds and we think a reasonable target for production cameras is about 10 seconds.

Jim

I'd just like to point out that if Jim was captain of the Enterprise, Scotty would be able to hit the 2 second boot up time... but only in the third act.

Look, different style shooters will have different desires. Plain and simple. Personally, I do mostly very planned work, so 10-15 secs will be completely fine. The reality is that, just like I do now, I will most likely not let the camera power down until I choose for it too.

With the smaller form factor of the dsmc brain, add the power module and you never have to worry about the boot time via the hotswap function. The camera will still be small and workable.

What is 8 sec's among friends?

My first Scarlet video will be titled:

"On in 10 seconds"

10 - 15 is a big improvement on the R1
Its a shame 2 sec can't be met as there is a lot to be said for instant on like a DSLR

Are RED working on a "Sleep" mode to save on battery and do a instant wakeup when you're good to shoot?

I am not saying I would not purchase a Scarlet, I am a huge fan and want one as bad as everyone else. I just wanted it to be a DSMC and replace both my video and still cameras. For anything staged, 10 seconds is fine. However there are shots I'd miss if my still camera didn't turn on in .2 seconds. If the camera has enough battery power to stay completely on for 2-4 hours with battery swaps that would handle most events, or if the sleep mode has a long life with a really short wake up time. But if you are wandering around a city for a day taking snaps and something spontaneous happens, that is where the speedy turn on is helpful. Even situations like "come quick, look at what the cat/baby/dog is doing..." This just means I may carry two camera bodies, but no one can say for sure until we get our hands on them to try them out.

So true... its kinda sad ...

not sure what dslr you are using but the sensor cleaning in mine every time its turned off or on takes 3-5 secs.. and ive never even thought about it...

I don't think many of my clients even know that it takes a full minute to start up my RED. If I can hide that from them, I don't think 10-15 seconds will ever be a problem for me.

Congratulations RED Team on the working prototypes.

I think everyone missed the REAL point of this thread... They have working prototypes, and the only thing that isn't perfect is that it takes 8 measly seconds longer to boot up.

DOH That shit's funny. Boy do I feel silly.

And with a pico-second to spare.

That is scary cool
I hope your right
I want my hand held epic or scarlet already

3 Second Rule

3 Second Rule

Three seconds is kind of a magic number. As long as you stay under that people don't really notice. It doesn't matter if you are 2.9 seconds or .009 seconds. More than 3 seconds people start to get impatient. But if you can't do it you can't do it. I don't have a single computer in my house that will start up in less than 10 seconds even from sleep. And Epic/Scarlet has more data processing power crammed into it than any computer I have (yet.)

But let's put it in perspective:
3K and 10 seconds vs 1080p and instant. Scarlet wins.
Redcode Raw and 10 seconds vs. AHVCD/MPEG4/H264 and instant. Red wins.
Modular and 10 seconds vs One-Size-Fits-All and instant. Red wins.
Upgradable and 10 seconds vs Obsolete in a few years. Red wins.

It's still a no brainer. Red is a motorcycle among mopeds, even if it is going to take a little bit longer to start.

I would be cautious about making too many assumptions about the working prototype. This is a very complex project, there are many levels to it.

You all may be right, but until Jim says, "we have a working prototype" I'm not gonna get worked up about it.

Jay

Congrats Red Team & thanks for the update. I'll keep a spare coolpix in my pocket, just in case... either that or a really, really long extension cord...
