  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-M...

WOW....
that is 5 EPIC-M's is a few days...Gibby, Dino, London RED, and 2XKeslow Camera...

This is great news and I love that you guys are being strategic, in selling Epic-M's to those who understand how Red works, and who have the ability to showcase the cameras properly :)

I just got a feature project greenlit for August, super curious if iI will be purchasing a RED ONE or EPIC (as a current non-red owner) to shoot it on...

exciting either way

So assuming not everyone one from #15-30 ordered an M, things are being built up quickly, now that you are all finished building the 30 epics for the Hobbit?

30 Epics!? That is one hell of a production they're preparing in New Zealand.

Can't wait for that movie and I specially can't wait for the Blu-Ray, I'm sure the BTS stuff will be amazing.

Jackson should do what he did with KingKong and do a blog with weekly BTS videos.

Awesome Jim thanks for the update. I'm going to have to venture down to keslow this week and take a look. I'm curious to know about quantities. I remember you saying very limited but I was wondering I could take a stab at a number. Less than 100? Less than 50? 10? We have a consigner at our rental facility with camera 89, was curious to know of the production run of the M might get that high.

We'll continue to make EPIC-Ms until EPIC-X production begins... maybe even after. The love for the machined body with rental companies and others really surprised us.

Jim

Yeah. Machined is the way to go for me. There's something about CNC machined parts. It's like a fine watch, that does 5k 120 fps.

Is this true? Are there additional qualifiers, or are there just people in line who have opted out?

I think this a bit of an assumption. Only the big early adopting players have been served. Perhaps we should wait till more cameras get shipped. Either way it's really up to Jim and co to decide. I'll wait happily for mine as I'm sure many will

I know Dino gets his next week... :-)

Awesome.

Reading KeslowCamera's blog, I see their Epics are going to work on Pirates 4 for VFX and Underworld 4...had those both already been announced? Great stuff - those Ms are certainly starting off busy.

The amazing thing about the wait for Epic is that I already have a Red MX that I'm driving with that's serving me beyond fine..Makes the wait so much easier than the wait for the original Red One 3 years ago. We live in awesome times

As I'm not in the manufacturing business, can somebody tell me why the machined parts would be "better" than the molded production epics? Or is it just "different"?

I can understand that one would love to have them because it feels like a handmade swiss watch, but is there a substantial difference in the material quality?

I believe that has been discussed somewhere, but I can't find it. So sorry if this causes a repost.
Thanks!

Why does anyone wear a Rolex when a Timex will keep just as good time?

In the case of rental houses, however, I can see them wanting a camera that looks different to make them more easily identified. Eventually there will be xxxxxx numbers of Epics out there and probably only xx, maybe xxx numbers of Epic Ms.

An M camera would probably be easy to spot if it were to show up on a shoot or production... Thus anyone not authorized to have one might fall under a cloud of suspicion.

A component machined from aircraft quality aluminum (just a guess) bar stock is exponentially stronger than a cast aluminum part. This is because the molecules in bar stock are all facing one direction. With a cast part the molecules are not lined up, hence less strength, less durability.
