  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic flare issue solution

Pawel, Looks to me like the lens wasn't properly covered when a black balance was done and that's a residual lift in the blacks. Thinking about this more I realized something- Some plastic is semitransparent to IR, it's posible that you black balanced in a very bright room, had a lenscap on and IR Leaked through the lens cap and screwed with the readout. Try black balancing without a lens, the lens port cover on, and a sweater thown over the camera.

Mike....doubt it....as i always do blackshading in a dark room with lens cap AND a dark towel over the camera. So that i believe can be ruled out.

I'll take one, Doug. Self Addressed Stamped Envelope? or $400??? Still enjoying your dolly...

I'd like one, but if my wife caught me spending $50 for a small fleck of foam, she's tattoo "DUMBASS" on my forehead. And I'd agree with her.

The challenge here is going to be for Doug to make enough quickly to be worth his time, without making them too expensive. I'd drop $15 - $20. But beyond that, I'd most likely try to do it myself. I mean.. Come on.. It's nothing but flocking foam!!

PS I love doug's Nikon mount too!!

Hi all,
As the person who indirectly started the (now closed) Epic Flare thread which went to 205 posts, I'm very glad to see that there is a possible solution. I was on holidays, so only got to see the whole thread today. Adam Eden took up the cause & there was much conjecture along the way. Saw some great comment from Mark Pugh (gidday Mark!).
The main thing for everyone to know is that RED does take it seriously. I had dialogue with Brian Fairbanks before the thread even started & as you saw, Deanan has also taken up the challenge. To make it very clear, the flare is nothing like a regular lens flare & the original incident involved a 4 bank kino well out of frame (obviously easily cut) with a 65mm Ultraprime. I also had a similar effect with a 10mm UP looking out of a garage doorway & panning it out. A definite image reflection from way out of frame.
My belief........ the prismatic depth of the sensor/ir block actually allows bounce back of image reflection. My recommendation ......... would be to try baffles at the lens covergence point to stop stray light. Can't wait to see Douglas's fix.
If anyone wants to see the original shot, please contact me.

Hey David, I installed the flock in my EPIC that you are shooting with tomorrow, so let me know what you think of the fix I came up with, (with the help of Mark Pugh and Michael Mayda)
and if you like it, i have heaps of left over flock, so I can give you a piece.

Lemac have "FLOCKED" all of their EPICS now also, as I gave them a good piece of FLOCKING!

BTW David, I am sorry I dragged you in on the argument, but since you are a very well respected cinematographer, and you first pointed out the issue to me, I did use your name without your permission.

Guys like you and Spider lewis (another long time member of the ACS) know their shit, so when someone tries to argue the point that it is a normal flare it gave me the shits.

I dont think when people are filming car commercials, Ford, Mazda or anyone else would appreciate a "STREAK" (as I like to call it) appearing on their shiny new model motor car.

Definitely was my first thought....but nothing in that reflection reveals to me something inside my housing.....the ladder thing is kind of strange...Kind of reminds me of when you leave your plasma tv on an image and then its burned into the plasma....does anyone know if that is a possibility with the sensor?

Johnny,

I don't want to freak yo uout, but have you visually inspected the sensor? A while ago some people posted images of the laminate coming away from the sensor. I wonder if in the pressurized underwater housing this could be the lamiinate begining to come loose on the sensor itself.

So have a good look at the sensor itself.

Doug, will you also include a velcro "Flocked" tag for attaching to the body? :tongue_smilie:

My times is worth money. $50 is what? Maybe 20 minutes of my time? Plus, not worrying and using a solution that is proven to work, not having to walk around from art store to art store looking for the right thing (for those of you living in sprawlurbia it's far less pleasant, it's driving) Not worrying about damaging my $30 000 camera - Come on now! How is that not worth $50? (Or even not worth $400.)

David.....as my usual setup i clean and inspect the sensor, do a black-shading and setup the camera from that point. That said, the image you saw only comes up with my tinkering with the settings in RCX when i do a one light...i randomly check my material daily when transferring and nothing seen...only when i put my far out WB settings around 12,500 and tint to -22 and add in my magic colors......do i see this strange image....This said, ive done this since 2007 with this same camera. NOW, this could be that the black-shading some-how never took....but i won't know until i do some additional tests in San Diego this Monday and likely take it back to home base at RED.

I think black-shades is cumulative over time, and done to often you get strange effects. I should re-load firmware and do black-shade with warm camera with lenscap on.
