  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic flare issue solution

I only say this after years of defending the RED ONE as if it were my flesh and blood. I'd rather not deal with that again over such a minor issue.

I know a lot of us here have done our fair share of that and we want things to be perfect. I'm sure that's what RED wants too.

Peace
David

Sorry, I just reread my last post and it sounded very rude. I typed it quickly on my iphone during a quick lunch break on set. I very much appreciate Doug and Adam taking the time to explain their solutions. They both seem to solve the problem and it was very generous of them to share it with the community. Especially considering Doug doesn't even own an Epic.
While these are perfectly acceptable solutions in the interim, in my experience AC's complain about anything and everything that they haven't seen before, such as mini-BNC, mini-XLR, Red Shoulder Dovetail, IR contamination, etc. Once "flare flockers" start coming loose as AC's try and clean the sensor, they will start complaining, and producers will listen.

I don't think you were being rude. It's true. AC's whine about everything (no offense, it's in the job description I think!) but your point is very well taken.

Trying to clean an OLFP properly with this shit in the way is a bad idea. I still can't believe Deanon or anyone else from RED hasn't responded to the RED Community about this. All we know is there was some "side bar" approval from Jim. WTF? Why isn't that a public response to something this important?

We shouldn't have to resort to makeshift solutions on a state-of-the-art digital cinema camera that is expected to go into battle on major features.

Oops. I spoke up again. ;)

Agreed, but if they want it to be perfect, which I'm sure they do, why the silence?

I can't imagine they are still evaluating.

Ok...here's one for ya...ANYONE ever see this ? This is what i think might be a reflection of OPLF--but i don't even know what i'm talking about when i say that....but i heard enough talk about it to be dangerous...Anyway, i see this on images where the light is just right...on this image i'm using Tungsten LED lights....but i also see the same image on some shots where i have HI contrast...dark on lower half of image and then looking up to sun underwater...It's ALWAYS the same image...to me it looks like a big ladder hanging down in the middle and then there is some kind of box to far right.....

R1mx; Shooting 4k 30fps.....and I have NEVER seen this before...only recently (this last shoot).

Whoa....a purple ladder! Now that is odd.

Could be an internal reflection off the inside of the underwater housing, hitting the front port?

Definitely was my first thought....but nothing in that reflection reveals to me something inside my housing.....the ladder thing is kind of strange...Kind of reminds me of when you leave your plasma tv on an image and then its burned into the plasma....does anyone know if that is a possibility with the sensor?

If this would be the case, it would also appeare when shooting a 18% gray chart or blue sky. Was this a high iso shot?

It looks to me like an internal reflection on the inside of the dome port....very common problem.

hehehe...time to change to CinePort, I think :)

Pawel, Looks to me like the lens wasn't properly covered when a black balance was done and that's a residual lift in the blacks. Thinking about this more I realized something- Some plastic is semitransparent to IR, it's posible that you black balanced in a very bright room, had a lenscap on and IR Leaked through the lens cap and screwed with the readout. Try black balancing without a lens, the lens port cover on, and a sweater thown over the camera.

Good point, Mike. Worth a try. Perhaps cover the lens cap in aluminum foil - no IR getting through that.

800 iso......i've not shot any charts....and black blance was done before the shoot began. I don't believe it is internal reflection since this is the same setup i've uses since 2007....only this shoot have i seen it.
