  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Fan Speed / Sound Algorithms.

I am very excited about this development, I am hoping I can upgrade soon! Summer is coming up and I have been nervous about upcoming nature shoots and fan issue. RED, you have listened and brought a solution to a problem. Thank you!

The general silence and lack of an answer to the Scarlet question seems to suggest that this may not be compatible with the hardware. I cannot think of why it won't be compatible, but then again, I am neither a programmer or an engineer. What I do know is that I HATE the attack of the fan during the most inopportune moments!!

Ironically Jarred, I'm one of the few (I guess) who have been doing this for over a year now! I've NEVER had an issue with the fan noise! I've done some pretty long interviews too... in the 90 minute range. I've had audio guys so impressed, they asked if I'd share how I was able to record for so long and NOT destroy the take... I'm glad you can help the masses now...

Hopefully a buddy in Frisco will FINALLY believe he can shoot interviews with his Epic!

My experience as well. It's never been a problem for my interviews. But I will always accept a quieter fan, we'll see how much the new firmware upgrade adjusts things before any decision about changing/adding fans.

last week did interviews successfully with an Epic.. by doing them in a large room on a long lens.
Oh, and there was an industrial heater that masked the sound of the camera..
While audible, it was not out of the character of ambient, and thus was acceptable.
I look forward to this upgrade!

I'm glad I'm not the ONLY one Mark! I put the camera fan control in manual... for every 2° the temp goes up, I increase the fan speed (manually during a record) by 1%! I've never had to go beyond 40%! EVER! It works like a champ EVERY time... even on LONG interviews!

For Adobe Premiere/Production Premium users... jeez... grab 5 seconds of the fan noise and REMOVE it in Audition if it bothers you or your client... it's VERY easy and VERY fast! Again... works like a champ if/when you need it! Love, love, love Adobe!

So our great engineers have finally finished the new algoritms for smart control of the fans.. and the results are pretty impressive.

YAY! Good to see RED is starting to attack these oft-mentioned pain points. Maybe this bodes well for what we can expect at NAB.

May I ask then, why not already start with 40% (or maybe 35%)? if you are going to have to increase it anyway? Starting with a stronger fan would make the camera to warm up slower wouldn`t it?

I've found through my own testing that the higher I start... the higher I need to go... Even at less than 10 feet from the interviewee, at 25%, the fan really isn't noticeable. At 40% in a VERY quiet room, the fan can be heard slightly... I'm lucky... the highest I've EVER gotten was either 40 or 41%.... Most of the time I'm in the 30's... and that's after we've been rolling non stop for at least 45 minutes to an hour.

I'm glad so many are happy, I just figured out my own solution long ago... I've never had a client complain... Many mention the "hair dryer" when we're in idle mode... but once we start rolling, everyone is happy.
