  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Fan Speed / Sound Algorithms.

Which is ironic because of how much people complained that they weren't full-size XLRs... Truth be told they were/are a huge step up from 3.5mm jacks, but just having audio input without requiring a module is better than nothing.

This is not a solution: it's a crutch. Broadband noise like fan noise is very hard to remove because it cuts right through the same frequency range of human speech. The real solution is to lower the fan noise and improve the design, and I'm very glad to see the announcement that Red is doing just that. (Arri has also made a similar announcement for Alexa a few weeks ago.)

Note that iZotope RX2 and Cedar are much better tools for eliminating different kinds of noise -- fan noise and otherwise. Even then, there's always a price to pay in terms of sound quality. Having a quiet location or shooting area to begin with is an enormous advantage and will save you lots of time and effort later on in post.
 
Love hearing about this sort of thing Jarred. dB consistency is a huge deal for audio so please do keep things simple to dial in a higher minimum fan speed. We wouldn't expect anything less from you guys! Thank you. And please show us some pics of that new accessory fan! :) Hope I am getting this right, but it sounds like there will be an upgrade to the cooling system by ways of a new fan of sorts with all kinds of goodness unleashed upon the masses and stuffs...

LPVE R3D, love Epic, love 4k over IP... sorry for the fan blabber but you guys need to hear it every so often. RED FTW. Love you guys and thank you for the free upgrades -- which contrary to pop belief don't grow on trees, despite you guys making it seem like they do! R<3D

Thank you Mark! I agree 100%! Not a believer of fixing it in post.
50% of my work is Doc & PSA for non-profits/foundations and often I am in tiny hut in 3rd world countries doing long interviews and often at a heartwrenching moment the fan kicks in!!! Fan noise is such an issue for me that I stopped using my Epic for those jobs and been looking at the F55. But these new fan(s) are a welcoming news and if they hold up for the long takes it would be amazing.

Well, first off, no additional word on something that is not available yet, is not that surprising. Secondly, although the thread is titled "Epic Fan Speed / Sound Algorithms" it refers to a future firmware, and up to now Epic and Scarlet have always received same version numbers of firmwares, no reason that should change or that they shouldn't get equal treatment. Lastly, Epic and Scarlet share identical bodies and many parts, such as the cooling system, so I think we can assume anything regarding non image recording aspects of the cameras will be identical, be they software or hardware, such as the new fans announced.

In the meantime, for those wanting a solution available now to help better cool their cameras, the Mecasax Fanplate in now available, I have received mine today. I haven't mounted it yet. I will post pictures and my findings when I get a chance, but their first functional prototype was used on one of our cameras for a feature last summer, it was already helping alot to keep the camera cooler longer. They've since been through more testing and another protype before developing this final design. More info here : http://www.mecasax.ch/products/fanplate

PS I have no direct link to Mecasax, put I do know Patrick Tresch, (also present on these forums) one of the developers of the Fanplate, I however bought mine at the same price it is available to everyone else.
 
Has this come out yet?

Just wondering cause I'm excited about my epic upgrade and would love to hear this new algorithm before I dish out more money to make it quieter.

I believe this was included on the most recent release build, because it was optimized for the new fans starting to trickle out.....

I m also waiting for real heat tests of people that allready recieved their fan.
There has been no words of actual facts from users. I m curious.
