  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Fan Speed / Sound Algorithms.

Yes they did big fuss about that. But my Retina nevertheless gets loud when processing. The size of the fan is the big trouble. There is no miracle, size matters.

Scarlet or just Epic? Paid or free? User install or Send in? Does the new algorithm work with the old/original fan (just not as quiet as the new fan [or fanS])?

While I think this should have been implemented from the beginning (the fan part, not the algorithm - fan tech hasn't changed much since mid/late-2011), it'd be hard not to be impressed by this (assuming it doesn't require an entire Dragon upgrade and isn't Epic-only). I'm going to keep my excitement level in check until all the details are known (price, timeframe, instalment method, etc.).

This new algorithm is huge and something my business partner and I are super excited about for the type of content we create...definitely interested in the new fans as well though, wondering if they're Apple-esque in that they are "uneven" blades for quieter sound? And I've always wondered what the connectors underneath the top grill were for, now it looks like we might have a clue :-)

This is marketing speak for spreading the audio energy across a wider frequency range - while this may sound quieter to the human ear, it may actually make it harder to use noise reduction to reduce or remove it as it becomes even more broadband.
 
The Firmware update is free as usual. The new super front fan and grill is an optional paid accessory, same the new top fan that fits between the camera and top grill.

Sounds reasonable (firmware was pretty much a given and the others hardly a surprise that for physical bits we have to pay real money).

Any wee hints on the price, or at least price range we're looking at paying here? I'd wait till NAB news itself filters through but have a meeting such info would be helpful before then.

User install or return to RED for installation?

Jarred, is the new super front fan added on top of the existing one or replacing the old one?

any info on 3rd parties compatibility?
the updates are all no-brainers and an easy decision (at least if you do interviews from time to time)! :)
but I wouldn't like it if I have to sell our current top-plates for it (x - just as an example)...

another question; will you be able to show us the difference at NAB already? :)

Can you mix and match and still get noticeable benefits? E.g. purchasing just the top-grill fan while keeping the original front fan will make for much quieter operation than just using the original front fan? Just being candid, but in testing so far what offers the best noise-temp ratio; swapping the front fan or adding the top fan to the original front fan? Bare in mind all this is moot if the new fans are $20 (exaggerated for poignancy) and can be user-installed, but I obviously expect them to be a little more substantial than that.

Do either fans change the profile of the camera? 'Super front fan AND GRILL' implies that it changes size/shape (sticks out?)... Do we need to worry about it imposing a limitation on any accessories (or even the Miesler module)?

Oh, and just for clarity (remove doubt), this is all Scarlet compatible, right?

NAB is going to be awesome this year.
 
This is an unexpected and welcome upgrade. I'm amazed every time what you guys are able to do with "just some code"
 
Thank God. I've felt really really awkward before at live performances when suddenly the music gets really quiet and you can hear the poor RED in the back of the auditorium whirring away.
