  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

As a Scarlet owner (#48), is there any faster path to Dragon...

Sure it is ! Wait for the Dragon EPIC appears in the RED store and try to be quick with deposit. Sure it is the fasest way :)
It is the great news that Jarred already mention trade in program - this is outstanding level of service, it never happen before in the industry, super awesome.

But.

We have to accept the matter of fact, that RED selling Scarlett core for less than $8000 - don't think you can be credited for trade in your Scarlet more than 50% of the current brand new body price (even 50% is a great value, technically it can be much lower). So you maybe can get $4000 discount on EPIC DRAGON, or even less. Because RED have nothing to do with Scarlet's - I don't think there is a way to sell them back, unless RED figure out some special upgrade path for Scarlets to sell them back.
Or you can basically keep Scarlet as great B or backup camera.
Well, the R1 trade in program was full price, one can hope, I paid 10k for my Scarlet, would be great to have them back along with the most badass cinema camera ever!

speaking of round... i'd love to have a circle-shaped sensor. i know it's 'different', but i'm just sayin. that way you can use the whole lenses image, and shoot something other than daggum recta-linear windows. circles make the world go round :)

Circular TVs actually sound rather awesome...! (if not a little confusing)

This is terrible news. I'm going to have to start using ND on night shoots. :-)

projection... working on it. try cropping some photos/videos and see what happens. it's actually quite natural. hopefully you'll hear about it when i'm ready to exhibit something. i'd love it if somebody beat me to it.

haha...

Inspirational news that the path of Scarlet users can one day merge with (upgraded) EPIC users.

I'm sure everyone in Red must proud to be making history - congratulations to you all.

[Guess] Dragon S/N ratio of the Blue channel will improve by 5 dB, and the Green and Red channels will improve by 4 dB :)

[Hope] Dragon will read the sensor 2 times per frame ... the first read at T=0 is used for 'offset correction' ... doing away with the need for black calibration .. or FPN?!

[Prediction] After Dragon comes out, the max 2k Framerate will increase to 600 fps (maybe even approaching 725 fps)

[Prediction] At the end of 2014 the lithium in the RedVolts will be replaced by Sodium.

[Prediction] The piezo lab either employes an acoustics engineer who asks them if they want to air to pump out on the other size of the device it comes in & puts a Helmholtz resonator in series of the intake (to silence the 150Hz squeel), Or they decide that using multiple sheets all vibrating like 'grass snakes', with successive layers 180 degrees out of phase (constant volume) is virtually silent, more efficient, and able to run at a much higher air velocity...

AJ

Holy cow! Hats off to the RED team. This is the best news for 2013....

I would love to see what new tech Red team will put into the upgrade.....may be (hopefully) starting with these would be superb....Piezo Jets

Happy 2013 to all in Redusers

Are you going to wait to upgrade everyone's epic before you start placing the Dragon sensor in new ones? I'm waiting to buy an Epic once Dragon is released, any news how that's going to work?

Uh oh. Didn't Jim say at the Scarlet launch that you were done with priority boarding, because the Epic queue had been such a hassle? It doesn't bother me either way in this case, but I can already sense the hoohah that's bound to follow!

That was for Scarlet, which had no priority ordering.

Upgrades have always been done by rank, and the Ms rank first!

I'm not an M owner so not gloating, just saying it like it is.

Amazing stuff! Thanks Red!!

Questions, is that noise in the far right swatches? Or is that just compression breaking down?

it's a 66kb JPEG. Pretty sure its the block jpeg compression. Also, no blackshade.

-if ISO has ever meant anything precise in the post-film digital era.
Actually where negative film is concerned, it didn't matter pre-digital any more than it does now AFAIK. It matters to those shooting a compressed master or those shooting with transparency emulsions, of course.

When the Mac was still a new platform, a lot of people wasted time with typefaces and font scaling etc. and as a result often enough produced irritating printed output (so I am led to believe). IBM users just printed out simple, easy-to-read text because that's all they had. A similar thing could happen with the Dragon: because lights are not required to get a decent exposure, some folks will forego lighting and produce sub-par imagery. And anti-RED fanboys will crow about these isolated examples as proof that their more limited tools force them to think more about what they are doing, blah blah.

So yes, as several people have pointed out, someone will with a straight face say that 18 stops is too much latitude.

Fan noise: I'm not a RED owner or user but from what I have read, some users do not know how to properly set fan speeds. This could be the reason why some people have problems. Also, it appears that some users don't know if/when they should blackshade. But I have zero experience with RED cameras so I'm speaking merely hypothetically.

I`m not a fan of pushing the resolution up that much.
imo 5k is quite enough... sometimes you`ll need just 5k or 4k (it isn`t just about cinema. Why don`t expand the horizon?!) what would result in cropping the image.

Increasing fps is good.
Increasing bitrate is even better.
But increasing the resolution to 6k is overSIZED for me.
Most people can`t even perceive HDTV because their TV is not close enough.

I think there are more important things to work on than resolution, resolution, resolution.

As it is any Cmos sensor suffers from debayering, down sampling is an easy way to improve on that matter. So shooting 6k gives a really good 4k finnish. Shooting 4k for 4k does not hold up in the same way, far from it, so with all the talk of 4k cinema the cameras actually needs to deliver higher resolution.

Remember it's a DSMC camera, the "S" stands for stills and many of us want the best stills we can get from our image stream. I did a fashion shoot recently and pulled the stills for billboards, 5K worked out pretty well but I'd love to have 6K. If you don't need it then just use the 4 or 5K settings, it's all about options and versatility. The Epic is the most versatile camera in the world.
