  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

My 2004 Powermac g5 Liquid Cooled does not agree. There was a factory defect and liquid leaked, frying my motherboard.

Bad idea because similar product had factory defect? With that mindset we are heading back to stone age. For every defect unit there are thousands of working units in use. I've been using liquid cooling with my PC for over 10 years and been reading on the liquid cooling forums for even longer. If something leaks it has always been user error that I can remember. User errors can be eliminated to absolute minimum with proper desing.

"Now... I have to tell you that what we have done in the past pales in comparison to what we are working on for the future... :-) Jim."

So I wanted to post this on the other thread but its closed... Should I cancel my blackmagic pre order? Im gonna be in a funk If come Nab2013 Red does something ridiculous that I could actually afford. In 3 years were probably gonna have Sub 10k Epic dragon specs in a new body from Red If the Prices and technology keep going how they do... Im so glad the time of the "slow tech release" days are over. Thank you Red... You guys blow my mind. I am 23, I will own a crazy cinematic Red Camera before I am 27.

Have thought about Dragon and the HDRx mode and came into the conclusion, that it would be rather useful to have HDRx even with the Dragon sensor. However, not to extend the rather incredible dynamic range of Dragon, but instead to make it possible to grab still images properly from footages. Typically the 180 shutter speed, which creates the desired motion blur with 24 or 25 fps, is rather inconvenient for stills. But now, since Dragon has such an incredible dynamic range, one could exposure to the right, set the HDRx say to -3 or -4, and then use the HDRx channel for the stills. So, Dragon and the HDRx mode made it possible to blur motion and to stop motion in one token --that would be literally the DSMC camera.

+1, +1, +1, +1, +1, +1, +1, +1 x 1000
It was Jarred who said that motion/still capture was a great use of HDRx. If the power is there, why not go ahead and include it unless something about it makes some other improvement they are making unworkable...

Never, ever make concrete plans around something from RED that has not been finalized and offered. They create great products but they do it on their own schedule and things are always subject to change and delay.

RED ONE, R1 MX, Epic, Scarlet, Epic Monochrome. REDCine-X. Have I forgotten something?

Dragon sensor? Red has made some rather... uhm, optimistic claims in past.
In my opinion they would be much better off with posting a r3d with 20 stops of DR.
Not some unoptimized jpeg.

It would help the Red Hype Machine look more credible.

i'll wait for real world examples before jumping on the Red-hype bandwagon
Not to worry... the bandwagon is so crowded already that there may not be room for any more for this parade. But get in line and you may get on for the next parade... or one of the future ones. '-)

EDIT: Put a different way, if you require proof after what they've accomplished and delivered, then you should just wait with the second tier because once you've received the proof that you require, RED will have moved on to something else and you will always be behind.

I've been loving the dr and colour from my Scarlet since this past summer but I've seen how I could really use the extra resolution and frame-rates of the EPIC ... so this upgrade announcement has really inspired me to work as hard as possible so I can accept the generosity being offered! RED may not be the most timely company, but its level of honesty and respect for owners helps tide me over. I'm glad people still keep their word!

Thanks for this ongoing scam!

I guess the Red naysayers have to continue to beat their drums, b/c if they stopped and actually payed attention, they'd be forced to understand that in five short years Red revolutionized the camera side of feature film production.

I can understand wanting to reserve judgement until more footage is released, but there's no reason to be cynical -- sensor technology keeps improving every year, so why have doubts that Dragon is a leap forward? And even if it turns out that you'll want to crush the last 2-stops of detail for richer blacks... that still leaves you 18 friggin' stops of DR! Sounds pretty exciting to me.

Yeah, what David said...
