  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Enter the Dragon

I'm going to invest in toilet tissue, there is going to be a lot of RED haters out there that will need Kleenex to wipe away their tears when they hear about this! Jim and Jarred and RED TEAM you just murdered the competition,,,,,,AGAIN! Salute

Happy New Year RED and all at Reduser. What a fantastic thread to wake up to on the 1st of January.

Congratulations on the marvel that is Dragon and thank-you for keeping the door open to Scarlet owners. I'm very excited to see what this means in terms of real-world day to day shooting. Bravo RED for raising the bar yet again!

Heh heh. Screw them all :)

Just kidding. Quite honestly we deserve some of the slack that we get.

Remember we have only been making cameras for a few years now... and we have made some mistakes a along the way. Some of the bits in the very first round of our accessories.. That fucking mini hd-sdi... o my, we have a healthy list of sidesteps that seemed like such a great idea at the time. No wonder we pissed some people off along the way :)

But we learn.... listen to you guys, and ourselves.. and we move forward.

For all those out there that don't like some piece of what we do.. just tell them to give us some time. Tell them to take a second look if it's been awhile. We likely will get to where they want to be. We will continue to push things forward to the very bleeding edge as long as you guys are happy to stick around for the ride. We have been building a library of technology over that last few years that you are just beginning to see a sliver of. If you think Dragon is impressive.. just wait.

Speaking of which.. a ton of credit needs to go to our engineers ( and their families that we stole them from).

You know Graeme, and Rob, but there is also a whole team of software and hardware and sensor gods that work tirelessly in the background, writing code, pushing buttons, inventing.. taking huge risks solving impossible problems, Listening to Jim or my crazy ideas and then watching us have temper tantrums because something isn't working.

But they always dig down and come back up completely exceeding any expectations.

Making this stuff isn't easy. It is relentless. This is 18 hours a day , holidays and weekends , don't-go-home-till-it-is-done kind of work. .. it has been that way since we began.

I'm not a religious man but God bless our engineers.. and for all of you out there still with a drink in your hand tonight raise it and give them a nod.

They deserve it.

It appears that the Dragon will have about 4 stops more DR and less than half the noise of the current Mysterium-X sensor.

Jim

When we think of all that has been achieved with the Mysterium-X sensor, it is just mind blowing to consider what the future holds with the
Dragon! Well done RED Team!

Great post Jarred! And cheers to everyone involved. Can't wait for Dragon, can't wait to see what you guys have planned for the future. Pretty great thread to wake up to in 2013, oh my... :)

Now THAT would be some great news!

No one has brought up a global shutter. 18 stop DR, no more IR issues and a global shutter ? I smell and Acadamy award for that achievement.

Global Shutter creates foundational problems in other aspects of sensor design.... as much as everyone thinks they want a global shutter they really just want the side-effects. We took things to a whole different level.

...again... :)

Sounds great! Can't wait :)

when will the upgrades start? Roughly estimate?
what would be the new price be around?
are you also going to replace the fan with a added topfan and/or more silent front fan so the camera comes back more silent :) just hoping :)

good luck perfecting it!

This is the message from "new RED".

As much as i miss som parts of old RED and Reduser, this is the way to go foreward.

Happy new year Jarred

Even film has some shutter 'distortion' since it's not instantaneous.

What I am really keen to see is the aesthetic advances - the stuff you can't quantify. Jarred Land's championing of the engineers reminds me of something Hans Zimmer said about the technicians that make synthesisers, that 'they're as much artists as the musicians', i.e. the ear (or in this case the eye) of the technician is the foundation for everything that's done subsequently.

The idea which Gunleik spoke of earlier, about aiming to eliminate the need for heavy ND's (e.g great results at low ISO) - Sounds good. Do you see this as something to aim for? Are we heading in this direction?

My Dragon T-shirt just got cool :) This sounds fantastic
But still a bit worried about how much to save for the Scarlet --> Epic trade ins. No doubt it will be a fantastic offer. But please give us a heads up as soon as possible.

If we can once again shoot strobes you can call it a galactic shutter if you like. :)

Yeah, "21 stops of DR is of no use. 13.5 stops is precisely the correct amount. And 6k? We've been saying for years now that 4k is what the industry needs."

Oh my friend you make me laugh and laugh.
