Eminem "Phenomenal" Music Video Teaser - Shot on Weapons and Master Anamorphics

Love this video!!

Those Master anamorphics look AMAZING - there's so little distortion, it's crazy! The bokeh is awesome too. Did you guys use any of the optional flare elements?

Love the slow mo too - what where you guys at generally? 80fps? There were a couple of slower shots too - how far did you push Weapon with that? 200fps? Looked great!

Amazing job as always!!! Thanks so much for sharing!!

Insane video! Really great execution of all the various concepts.

This one was a pretty hectic schedule and tight set security and NDAs, so not as much shots for a making of... As mentioned, we shot with 2 6K Weapons, an 8K Weapon and my Carbon Fiber Dragon Epic. A Phantom Flex 4K was also used for a few select slow motion shots, mainly in the hospital.

Regardless, here's some frame grabs and behind the scenes snippets for y'all...

Hospital:

The hospital was a closed down facillity in Inglewood, CA and like all hospitals, fairly creepy to be in. We only had a half of a day to load in, shoot Eminem waking up and all of the corridor fights before packing up and company moving to downtown Los Angeles by midnight in order to light and shoot the alleyway chase and the ending fall onto the stage.

Alley:

The Alley was adjectent to the theater stage we ended the video with. By the time the trucks packed up in Inglewood, drove 30 minutes to downtown and unloaded, we started shooting the alley sequnce clost to 4AM. The last few shots with Eminem running away from camera, you can see the sky brightening in the background.

City:

All of the city shots were photographed on the Universal backlot. We only had a day and a half to dress the entire set with all of the signage and neon. and could only realistically pull off a limited run of dressing. Oh and did I mention John fucking Malkovich?

A significant set piece in this location features Eminem running into a truck and being propelled into the air as the gas canisters the truck was carrying explode behind him. Eminem was pulled up and over via stunt coordinator Andy Armstrong's wire rig and we shot the scene at 96fps from a moving Russian Arm hinging around the stunt. The truck was jacked up to one side, as was the motorcycle at the point of impact. All the flying debris was added in post by VFX supervisor Nick Ponzoni of Blackbird out of Australia.

HeliPad:

The helicopter pad was another sequence that presented several logistical challenges. As you might assume, any work involving helicopters comes with not only financial considerations, but also safty and permitted ones as well. Our solution was to shoot just outside of LA in Camarillo airport. The location gave us ample room to work and stage our actions, the bad news it was an active runway in the middle of a vast empty airport field... AND we were shooting all night shots in this black abyss.

Helicopters also come with their own headaches in the form of strong down wash from the blades which will send gear flying. This didn't bode well for my fondness for large overhead soft lighting for night work. Cudos again to Nick for taking our ground level shots and transforming them into a rooftop helipad set against a city. There's some excellent roto/tracking work done here.

Stage:

Finally, our theater stage was pretty straight forward spot-light effect. But with some judicious use of smoke and a jo-leko, it created a pretty iconic looking silhouette of Eminem.

I looked at the hosted link and thought it looked double compressed as well. So I paid the $1.99 and downloaded the video to see the work. And...it didn't' look any different. Time for an experiment. I went back and watched the Bad Blood video on VEVO/YouTube and it looks great. Went back to iTunes, bought it, downloaded it...and it looks...not great. Seems like it is super compressed. I paused on the title graphics part in the Bad Blood video, and stopped iTunes on roughly the same frame. Not even close. Made screen shots of the same frames in both the online version and the iTunes version. However, you end up with grey frames when you try the old "shift/command/3" screenshot in iTunes. Apparently Apple, in its infinite wisdom don't want us makin' no frames of iTunes videos. In any case...what gives? Anyone know? (yes my iTunes prefs are set to play back videos at the highest quality, in this case 1080...and I am watching both with my NMP with the D700 cards and a thunderbolt 27" monitor.) Thoughts?

What downloaded (to my iPad) is a file that's just under 100Mb/ 853x358. I didn't see any other options. Same results for everyone else?

真的拍得很好!

Interesting that the MV takes place in Hong Kong. My girlfriend overheard the song while I was watching it and said the beat sounds like Chinese temple music.

Thanks for the write up, Chris - you're breakdows of your style and RED workflow are DEEPLY appreciated! Your willingness to share elevates everything we do at RU.

I really like the transition shots with extreme contrast: After Eminem leaves the hospital and is shimming down the alley, also that transitions to split light & dark shot as he moves out of the alley to the street. The shot between the wheels of the rickshaw that pans up to John Malkovich is just iconic. Also another transition shot I really love is at 3:56 where Eminem is launched over truck, and starts with the back tire lifting through a lens flare. I think those transitions add a lot of energy and momentum to the story/edit.

Here's a little monitor grab from the raw take of the motorcycle crash stunt...

Chris, thanks for all of the BTS!
The compression is killing all of the eye candy, but it still looks like great work.

Is everyone else seeing what I'm seeing????

6:1 compression at 96fps???? If that isn't a reason to upgrade to Carbon 8K, I don't know what is.
Unless I'm misreading the monitor, it's 5K 6:5 though. Epic Dragon isn't far off at 8:1 compression for 5K 6:5 96fps.

I was just going to post about that myself!

Chris, do you always shoot the lowest compression possible? Up until about six months ago I was shooting 5:1. Since then, I have gone 4:1 in my quest for the most detail possible. Even if its is just a talking head, I shoot 4:1.

Thank you for the BTS photos. You do a great service to the Red community with everything you share.

Really enjoyed it Chris. The street scenes looked rich. Best fish slapp'n scene I've seen all year :)

Really like the motivated camera moves. Adds a heck of a lot to the pacing.

Here's the link for those in iPad, etc:

Its only 5k 6:5 @ 96fps,

From the screen grabs:

5k 6:5 95.9fps
6:1 Weapon vs 8:1 Dragon

6k 6:5 47.95
5:1 Weapon vs 5:1 Dragon

6k 6:5 23.98
4:1 Weapon vs 3:1 Dragon

5k 6:5 is 13.1mb/frame, dragon data rate is 157.2MB/sec, based on the screen shots Weapon is 209.6MB/sec

only about 30% increase in data rate, hope it gets better by release, less compression at high frame rates was our only reason for upgrading.

Shot full frame 8K, no vignetting with the Canon 24mm L glass...

The 24 L II vignettes 1 stop even at f5.6 on FF35, 3 stops or so wide open, can't see how there is not more vignetting on the larger 46mm 8k image circle.

Some excellent camera work in there, specially the fight scenes!

the apple watch product placement in an Eminem video makes me want to puke,
'F* money. I don't rap for dead presidents; I'd rather see the president...'

I think Chris was talking about sensor COVERAGE - ie the 24 L covered the entire 8K sensor, not about the specific "vignetting" of the lens.

The video was MADE for Apple Music, so the additional branding makes sense to me. Id expect no less from my clients. Its show BIZ after all.
